The problematics of oncological disease from the perspective of patients' family members

This bachelor thesis focuses on the issue of cancer from the perspective of family members, maps their experiences and coping strategies. The theoretical part covers the basic concepts of cancer and in the field of psychooncology. Furthermore, it describes the impact of the disease on the whole family and the changes that occur after prognosis. The last chapter discusses the challenging life situation (in the context of a whole family), coping strategies and external ways of helping. The practical part is based on qualitative research methods, it has been conducted through semi-structured interviews with family members (adult children) of mothers with cancer. Interpretive phenomenological analysis has been used for data analysis. The research group consists of 6 family members, 4 women and 2 men and the data is presented in an individual case reports and in an inter-case comparison. The results show that individuals experience negative and positive emotions, stress, manifestation of psychosomatic symptoms, hide their feelings and talk about their thoughts. Additionally, the respondents commonly mention the extensive time spent helping the patient, the negative impact on cognitive functions such as memory and attention, as well as positive aspects such as reassessment of priorities. The respondents also mention the societal changes in the family, including changes in relationships, roles, family involvement in the household, perceptions of change in the patient, and financial problems associated with difficult family situation. The last segment discusses the coping strategies used by the respondents such as social support, acquisition of information etc.
Patterns of coping with cancer

Cancer is still one of the most feared disease. The communication of diagnosis and the subsequent treatment process are very psychologically demanding for the patient. The aim of the bachelor thesis was to look at this difficult life situation and to map, describe and analyze the ways in which it can be coped. The theoretical part of the thesis describes cancer, the process of coping with an unfavourable diagnosis, sources of support for cancer patients and conditions of personal growth. The practical part uses the design of qualitative research. In-depth interviews are used to find out the experiences of people who have overcome cancer. The research group consists of 5 respondents, including 2 men and 3 women. The process of their experience and coping with the disease, balancing the sources of support and burden and the consequences of this experience on their current lives are monitored.
Working with pre-school children hospitalized with diseases

This bachelor thesis is dedicated to children with oncologic condition and possible of working with these children during hospitalization. I chose this topic after I had had personal experience with a serious illness of my son. I am looking into the matter as a parent, who zealously fought to keep the spirits of my child up in the depressive hospital environment. The practical part is divided into two explorative probes. In the first one I proceed from my own experience with the progress of my son´s disease and his hospitalization. The second part comprises suggestions of various activities for paediatric patients during hospitalization. The activities, which I describe in my thesis, could be used to promote a happier and more pleasant stay in the environment, in which the child does not feel comfortable.
Prognostic awareness in advanced cancer patients

Being aware of the severity of their medical condition is a key precondition for patients with advanced disease to be involved in advance care planning. This thesis aims to describe the phenomenon of prognostic awareness and identify factors that are related to prognostic awareness in patients with advanced cancer. The author of this dissertation thesis participated in a three-year project, which was supported by the Czech Science Foundation (IMPAC study, grant number 17-26722Y), which aims to map the preferences of patients with advanced disease and further describe factors related to prognostic awareness and assess its stability over time. The secondary goal was also to describe how patients with a serious diagnosis and their loved ones evaluate their participation in a research study. In the introductory chapter of this thesis, we describe the concept of prognostic awareness, methods of measuring it and the goals of this work. The dissertation thesis includes 4 publications that are focused on this topic and 1 publication that responds to the secondary goal of this dissertation thesis. The publications are followed by a discussion in which we deal with all our findings in the context of the latest evidence available on this topic. Psychosocial aspects of cancer in adults

Anotation: The diploma thesis " The Psychosocial Aspects of Cancer in Adults" deals with problems of the psychosocial aspects of the oncological disease and its command by adults patient.The theoretical part engages in individual phases of disease and its consequences of patient's life. It also deals with basic ethical problems which are connect with this disease. The theoretical-practical part states the basic forms and methods of supportive oncological care and it demonstrates the propsal for its classification. The practical part is elaborated by the form of interviews. The first interview was accomplished with the hospital chaplain woman and the following interviews with oncological female patiens. The main aim of the thesis is to alert to problems of the psychosocial disease aspects whose solution should be the inseparable component of the complex oncological care.

Nurse as a family members educator of cancer patients.

This bachelor's thesis is focused on the issue of a nurse acting as an educator for relatives of cancer patients. Apart from professional medical care, cancer patients also need psychological support and care throughout all the stages of cancer. Support of their family is especially important. Education is a necessity for their psychological support. Part of this thesis deals with issues of breast cancer in female patients, the psychological difficulties they face during the illness and support of family members and education they can receive from a nurse. Psychological adaptation demands to oncological diagnosis of cervival cancer: quality of life and posttraumatic growth in the phase of disease remission

The presented thesis deals with psychological demands and specific factors of the adaptation to the oncological diagnosis "cervical cancer." The focus is on quality of life and posstraumatic growth of patients in the phase of disease remission. The theoretical part first introduces specifics of cervical cancer with consideration of patients' experience and then provides the issue of coping with the oncological disease in terms of coping and defense mechanisms. Then it elaborates the psychological adaptation to cancer disease with focus on other aspects linked to society, patients and disease altogether with problems in coping with oncological diagnosis. The theoretical part of the study is concluded with the description of demands and patients' experience in each clinical stage of the disease. The chapter of disease remis;sion is focused on theoretical background of life quality and posttraumatic growth concepts including an overview of tools for quantitative evaluation. The empirical part describes supporting psychological and other aspects, which help women to cope with cervical cancer.
