Production Ideology of the television serial Proč bychom se netopili

The diploma thesis "Production Ideology of the television serial Proč bychom se netopili" deals with the production process in the making of a television serial. The initial focus was on the formation of one of the main characters, Keny, and on his position in the production as a whole. The thesis builds upon the ideas developed by cultural studies. These combine the structuralist approach inspired by the linguistics of Ferdinand de Saussure with the ideological approach based mainly on the thought of Louis Althusser. The production process is enquired into by Elena Levine who distinguishes five key categories of production. The research section which represents the core of the present diploma thesis is methodologically formed by grounded theory. It is based on qualitative interviews with those in key positions with respect to the production process. In the analytical section, the thesis operates with Roland Barthes's concept of mythologies. In the interviews, the informants make reference to the category of production routine, of the myth concerning the ideal "waterman" (the main character Keny being a symbol of this myth), of the production conditions in Czech Television and of the viewer who appears to be the ultimate instance. National mythology of the world exhibition EXPO 2010 in Shanghai

This diploma thesis deals with the national presentation of the Czech Republic at EXPO 2010 in Shanghai in terms of mythology, symbols, signs and codes. It describes the history of the World Exhibitions, attempts to highlight Czechoslovak achievements and on the basis of that to define key points of successful communication for an international, predominately Chinese audience. By comparing information on traditional Chinese symbols and values with that of Czech explains correlations between Czech and Chinese culture. This can help visitors from China identify with the Czech Republic. A mythological analysis is executed examining the exterior of the Czech pavilion, the exhibition inside, and notes narrative structures of individual exhibits and how they work to provide the preferred interpretation. Part of the overall analysis includes an overview of supporting events, which also help to strengthen the perception of Czech Republic to visitors. The information gleaned is used to summarize learnings that could be useful for the upcoming EXPO in Milan in 2015.
Mythology theme of Nikkarin's graphic novels 130

Diploma thesis Mythological motives in Nikkarin's comics trilogy 130 is one of the few Czech theoretical works that focus on the analysis of myths in contemporary Czech sci-fi comics. It applies semiological analysis to the still-unfinished tetralogy 130 (Odysea, Hodní, zlí a oškliví and Čas hvězdoplavců) by the young artist and writer Nikkarin, aiming to decipher mythological contents and describe the basic theoretical framework for their further exploration. The interpretation of the books is preceded by a section focused on the history of sci-fi comics in the Czech environment. The thesis is based on the hypothesis that the use of myths in the comic series 130 is deliberate. At the same time, the validity of the discovered myths is not limited to sci-fi comics, as they can often be found in other genres and on other platforms. One of the aims of the thesis is to discover such intermedial overlaps. An indispensable part of the diploma thesis is also the reflection of the series 130 in the Czech media, focusing among other things on the ability of the reviewers to decipher the hidden meanings.
