Developmnent and characteristic of the media mix in Japan

The thesis is about development of the media mix in Japan and its characteristics from the history to the present. The core points are the key elements of the media mix - manga, anime and video games. These media are described within the historical context in connection with the media mix. Beside the historical development and interconnections of these media, the thesis compares the media mix with the term transmedia storytelling. It defines both of these terms and illustrates their similarities. Practical research shows concrete examples of media mix, their mutual comparison and classification within the defined terms of media mix and transmediality. This is achieved by selecting samples with different media source from the media mix that are used as a demonstration for the media mix or transmedia storytelling practices.
Image of Woman in Japanese Popular Culture in the 2nd half of the 20th century

This thesis follows my previous studies of modern Japanese society and popular culture. I will especially focus on gender stereotypes, particularly negative stereotypes concerning women who refuse to bow to a substantial pressure from society endowed with a strong Confucian tradition. It was this very tradition - together with a foreign concept akin to the Western domesticity cult - what gave rise to the ideal of "good wife, wise mother" (rjósai kenbo), which at least in some form remains quite tangible even in contemporary Japanese society. One of the tasks this thesis wants to undertake is to describe how the negative stereotyping of women who stood in either conscious or natural opposition towards this ideal affected portrayal of women in Japanese popular culture (especially comics), which can be a very good perpetuator of all kinds of stereotypes. At the same time, I would like to find out whether it managed to partially subvert at least some of the negative images of women who refused to be good wives and wise mothers. Development of shojo and shonen manga character registers

(in English) A thesis looks into a development of character registers called yakuwarigo in shoujo and shounen manga from years 70s, 90s and 2000s. The main topic is about finding out how during those years the character registers changed in both genres (shoujo and shounen) separately and comparing the changes with each other. Due to limited length this work will be concentrating on character registers of female characters only.
Yaoi Manga and Slash Fanfiction in a Sociological Point of View

This thesis deals with slash fanfiction and yaoi manga, disparate yet similar phenomena of fan culture. Yaoi manga as genre of Japanese comics created by women and dedicated to women , and slash fanfiction as women's reaction to pop culture generally made by male authors, are both genres dealing with a romantic relationship between two men characters. This relationship is portrayed as an innocent romantic story as well as a hardcore pornography. The autor aims to describe the terms and inctroduce some of the most influential approaches to research of the topic. Author is interested in the issue in the way of cultural and gender approach. Cultural perspective provides a summary of approaches of Frankfurt and Birmingham schools, clarifys point of view of Abercrombie and Longhurst and other authors on the current and future trends in development of audiences. Mapping the internet, important space for the fan communitiy, is also a part of this paper. Gender perspective provides a description of the points of view on the women's status in popular culture, explains the motivation of the readers/authors related to the issue of homosexuality, and describes opinions of different feminisms about pornography. Research among fangirls and fanboys or authors of slash fanfiction and yaoi manga is included.
The Influence of Tezuka Osamu on Later Comics Äuthors

Japanese people see Tezuka Osamu as a significant figure of Japanese comic in 20th century, who gained nicknames as ‚god of manga' or ‚Japanese Walt Disney' during his life. Majority of people know him only as an author of popular manga (Japanese comic) Black Jack, Mighty Atom, Emperor of Jungle or Princess Knight, but his legacy is of much greater extent than what was already mentioned. This paper uses especially the method of analysis of secondary sources and, first of all, tries to introduce Tezuka's life and his complex work that is characterized by innovative techniques and broadening manga topics. In the second place, it attempts to find Tezuka's influence in work of later manga artists (especially in shojo manga of female group called Niju yonen gumi and manga authors linked to Tezuka's studio known as Tokiwaso) and the third, it gives a short and brief introduction to Tezuka's work as animator and to Tezuka's achievements in field of anime. Comics as the medium of the artistic expression

The dissertation (diploma thesis) with the topic "Comics as the medium of the artistic expression" consists of theoretical and practical parts. The theoretical part represents a definition of the comics, its short history and some important terms of the comics terminology. Next this part concerns with specific narrative constructions of the comics medium and also describes functions and cooperation of the visual and verbal components. In the individual charter is shortly described Japanese comics (manga), its characteristic and different aspects against the classic European and American comics. The end of the theoretical part is dedicated to the theory of the artistic expression and its particular elements, which are used in the comics. The practical part comprising the analysis of two classic comics works and one Japanese manga. Namely it is The Crow, The Crow: Skinnig the Wolves and The City of Light. These works were chosen intentionally because of their technical, thematic and cultural aspects, so the analysis can work with the wider scale of the artistic elements. In this bachelor's work, I present japanese popular culture and its history and development. This work describes the influence of western culture on the Japanese people as well as their traditional and popular culture and it's impact on the western society. Japanese popular culture includes anime, manga, subcultures and japanese popular music. Moreover the most importmant facts about the development of Japanese culture are explained.
