1 Abstract The topic of my bachelor thesis is the medieval St. John the Baptist church in Hostivař, Prague. A precious relict has been recently uncovered in its apse in form of paintings from the second half of 13th century, namely the Majestas Domini composition. My thesis forms a summary of existing findings concerning the church, creating a comprehensive document about the building which has not yet been written. The meaning of ideas about the end of the word in the process of conquest and colonization of America
Brenišínová, Monika ; Křížová, Markéta (advisor) ; Binková, Simona (referee)
The aim of this diploma thesis is to explore the possible influence of the idea of the end of the world on the process of conquest and colonization of America. The author tries to answer this question through the study of selected images of the Last Judgment. The purpose aim of this thesis is not to describe or stylistically classify given works of art, but to interpret them using the methodology based on the semiotic conception of culture as public symbolical system that allows to interpret the culture and its expressions in their social connections. As the topic of this work is related to the question of death and finality, the chosen works of art are interpreted also in connection with A. van Gennep's idea of "rites of passage", which enables to pass from one life stage to another. The main source for analysis is the photographic material, which illustrates images and reliefs of the Last Judgment in their natural environment.
Investigation of Optical Properties of Protective Layer for Glass Medieval Mosaic of Last Judgement from St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague
Valach, Jaroslav ; Kocour, Vladimír ; Černý, Miloš
The Mosaic of Last Judgement from St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague is a medieval masterpiece created in late 14th century by Venetian craftsmen. If very dramatic history and various problems encountered are taken into consideration, the current state of preservation is acceptable, perhaps mainly due to systematic effort to protect the valuable item of cultural heritage. The research project, part of which is presented here, also aims on developing effective means for preservation of the precious object. It concentrates on finding formula for creation of protective layer that eliminates influence of chemicals present in air and in water, while being stable itself. The main goal of the investigation is to help in finding the best formula for protective layer that is most stable itself, i.e. which does not represent a future obstacle in viewing the mosaic, e.g. because of losing its transparency.
