New Technologies in Education

Title: Using online tools to assigns and assess the work of secondary school pupils in mathematics Author: Jiří Vančura Department: Department of Mathematics Education Supervisor: doc. RNDr. Jarmila Robová, CSc., Department of Mathematics Education Abstract: Despite the long-term trend of technology implementation in mathematics education, there is not much research that would empirically and long-term monitor the impact of technology on pupils' knowledge. The presented three studies examine the potential benefits of using Khan Academy as a tool for assigning and assessing homework in mathematics at upper secondary schools. The studies deal with three groups of research questions. What is the attitude of pupils towards the Khan Academy implementation, and what benefit do they see in the online practice? Can pupils transfer acquired knowledge from Khan Academy to the school context? In addition to procedural knowledge, does Khan Academy develop a deeper understanding of the underlying concepts? At the time of the research, the author was the mathematics teacher of some of the participating pupils. Based on the results of these studies, the consequences and recommendations for teaching mathematics at upper secondary schools using online platforms are discussed at the end of the thesis. Keywords: Khan Academy,...

Subtitles heuristics
Polanka, Martin ; Děcký, Martin (advisor) ; Peška, Ladislav (referee)
Original idea on this project comes from Khanova škola. This group of people is translating educational videos from Khan Academy and they would like to have an automatic tool, which will check their created subtitles. Character of this check relates with format of subtitles in general (time of beginning, ending, etc.) and also with Czech language and textual form of language. Within the scope of this thesis was developed software, which loads subtitles in SubRip format, on this loaded file analysis is executed and results are returned in XML or JSON format. Whole application is modular and has one main component (control program) and then several modules (plugins). These modules have one area of functioning, in which they execute analysis on subtitle objects. Plugins itself are realised by dynamic libraries, which are dynamicaly loaded on run-time. Thanks to that, application is simply extensible and new plugins can be added without necessity of re-compiling control program. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)
How to Create Self-Driven Education: The Social Web & Social Sciences, Coursera & Khan Academy 2014 Case Study
Růžička, Jakub ; Remr, Jiří (advisor) ; Soukup, Petr (referee)
This diploma thesis is concerned with the possibilities of the social web data employment in social sciences. Its theoretical part describes the changes in education in the context of the dynamics of contemporary society within three fundamental (interrelated) dimensions of technology (the cause and/or the tool for the change), work (new models of collaboration), and economics (sustainability of free & open-source business models). The main methodological part of the thesis is focused on the issues of sampling, sample representativeness, validity & reliability assessment, ethics, and data collection of the emerging social web research in social sciences. The research part includes illustrative social web analyses and conclusions of the author's 2014 Coursera & Khan Academy on the Social Web research and provides the full research report in its attachement to compare its results to the theoretical part in order to provide a "naive" (as derived from the social web mentions and networks) answer to the fundamental question: "How to Create Self-Driven Education?"
