Hana Králová Charles University in Prague, Faculty of Arts THE AUSTRO-HUNGARIAN FOREIGN SERVICE BETWEEN 1868-1918 Abstract Emerging from the reforms of the second half of the 18th century, the body of loyal civil servants gradually transformed itself into an efficient bureaucratic machine, which fully ensured the operation of the multinational Habsburg Monarchy until its disintegration. For many, a position within the civil service went hand in hand with attaining a certain prestige and rank within society, although the financial situation of lower and even mid - ranking civil servants was problematic at best. The foreign service, especially its diplomatic and central administration branch, undoubtedly ranked among the most prestigious parts of the civil service. Candidates, apart from being required to have the necessary level of educational attainment, were subject to a rigorous selection process focusing especially on their language skills. The diplomatic service also maintained its exclusivity by requiring candidates to provide proof of sufficient income, which limited access to candidates from among the wealthy elite, that is especially from among the traditional and new nobility a s well as from among the well-off individuals of bourgeois descent. The Constitution of the Habsburg Monarchy in the first of 19th century in comparison with the Polish Constitution of 3rd May

The thesis deals with the analysis of the Constution of first half of the 19th century in Habsburg Monarchy (The Pillersdorf constitution, The Kremsier constitution and The Stadion constitution) and with the analysis of the Polish Constitution of 3rd May from the year 1791. The first section describes constitutionalism as a concept. It is followed by an overview of previous historical events, which have great influence of the constitutional progress in the Habsburg monarchy in the previous period. The third chapter describes The Pillersdorf constitution, the fourth chapter is dedicated to The Kremsier consitution (and The Kremsier Assembly) and the fifth chapter discusses The Stadion constitution. Then is following by short section which is evaluating the influence of Austrian constitution on subsequent development of constitutionalism in Habsburg Monarchy. The seventh chapter is devoted to Polish Constitution of 3rd May and describes naturally also historical reasons for adoption of this constitutional text and an internal political situation in Poland especially during the 18th century. Bachelor thesis (in form of a case study) Ringstrasse as a showcaseof monarchy. Politico-social aspects of remodelling of Vinna at the turn of the century throws light on the reasons and effects of liberál period in Austria-Hungary and its reflecting in the face of the city. Most attention is given to the street itselves, its genesis and its meaning. Rightly the buildings, parks and memorials in singles have huge symbolical meanings. They inpersonate ideas of the period.

The diploma thesis deals with pedagogical thinking of Jan Valerián Jirsík in the years 1826-1843. The aim of this work is an introduction of Jan Valerián Jirsík´s opinions and ideas which are contained in his literary works. These opinions and ideas are classified to the context of thinking in Jirsík´s time. The work first describes time which Jirsík lived in, what spiritual environmental was around him and how education looked in the Habsburg monarchy. Then the examples of Jirsík´s pedagogical opinions are listed and commented, the examples were chosen from "Škola nedělní" book and "Časopis pro katolické duchovenstvo" magazine.
The Siege of Vienna and Everydayness in Vienna 1683 by reports of Jiří Vojtěch Felix Novodvorský

This bachelor´s essay appplies to a custodian of Dietrichstein palace in Vienna in 1683. It focuses on the second Ottoman´s siege of Vienna in summer in 1683. It extracts reports sent by the custodian George Vojciech Felix Novodvorský to duke Ferdinand Joseph from Dietrichstein during the whole year 1683. The target of the essay is o analyse events in Vienna, concretely in Dietrichstein palace from the view of an eyewitness. The point of interest is the town preparation for siege, description the two moth´s fights, the way George Vojciech Novodvorský percieved them and an outlook to Vienna defender everydayness. The essay contains also informations about consequential recon-struction of damaged palace.

The thesis deals with development of social policy during the reign of Maria Theresa and Joseph II. The first part describes the government and the political development of the Habsburg monarchy from the beginning of the Thirty Years' War to the Maria The-resa´s ascension to the throne. The second part deals with the problems of reign of Maria Theresa in the context of the era and her effort to maintain the monarchy. It analyses the conditions for creating the new reforms and the process of social policy formation. The third part describes the implementation of the new reforms to specific areas of life and their development. It analyses the transformation process of the Habsburg monarchy and its social policy during the common reign of Maria Theresa and Joseph II and it also analyses the influence of absolutist reign of Joseph II to the monarchy, its industry, culture and social reforms.

Czech Societies of Exact Sciences in the 19th Century

Account of Czech scientific societies operating in the Czech Lands since the 19th century is presented. In mathematics, physics and astronomy there was the Union of Czech Mathematicians with the students' Club for Free Lectures in Mathematics and Physics as its predecessor. The chemists were organized in the Club of Czech Chemists with the students' Club for Natural Sciences "ISIS" as its predecessor. All other scientific branches flourished under the Club of Natural Scientists. The Union of Czech Mathematicians and Physicists and Czech Chemical Society are two contemporary societies with an uninterrupted activity.
