Politicising EU Leadership Selection: Explaining the Success and Failure of the Spitzenkandidaten Procedure from the perspective of Postfunctionalism

EN With the changes in the Lisbon treaty, the party groups of the European Parliament unilaterally introduced the Spitzenkandidaten procedure, nominating lead candidates for the office of the President of the European Commission for the European elections of 2014. After its arguable success in 2014, when Jean-Claude Juncker became President of the Commission, the procedure then failed in 2019, when the national leaders in the European Council selected Ursula von der Leyen as Commission President. She had not stood as a lead candidate of her party family during the election. Considering the circumstances, the following question presents itself: Why did the Spitzenkandidaten procedure seemingly fail in 2019, when it was already successful in 2014? This thesis attempts to answer this question by formulating an argument on the basis of Postfunctionalism that domestic politicisation of the topic lead to constraining dissensus at the EU level, which resulted in the rejection of the Spitzenkandidaten procedure. The thesis tests the existence of domestic politicisation on the basis of discourse analysis of the election campaigns of significant political actors in France during the European elections of 2014 and 2019. Electoral volatility in European Parliament Elections in V4 Countries: 2004-2019

This diploma thesis focuses on changes in voting behaviour among voters in the Visegrad Group states (V4), specifically electoral volatility between the European Parliament elections and the national elections in the particular state. The approach to examining electoral volatility in this work is based on the second-order national elections theory, which divides elections into less and more important ones. The aim of the work is first to describe the overall electoral volatility in the V4 states in a cross-section of all European elections based on individual data from post-election questionnaire surveys. Subsequently, I find out what are the specific causes and motivations for changes in electoral behaviour. The analysis shows that there are several different patterns of volatile behaviour in the V4 countries, but the consistent and general pattern is a high degree of electoral demobilisation in the European elections. This may be due to political attitudes or the level of trust in the European institutions. I then analyze voters' demobilization among government and opposition voters, who differ mainly in their views of the national political situation. Comparison of the election campaigns for the 2014 European Parliament elections by French political parties in terms of usage of political marketing tools

The thesis focuses on election campaigns for the 2014 European Parliament elections by French political parties. The thesis deals with a rising popularity of the National Front party in France - nowadays an often discussed topic. The party is becoming increasingly popular and is attracting more and more voters. The biggest proof of the increasing popularity of FN is the party's victory in the 2014 European Parliament elections. There exist many explanations for this victory such as an unfavourable economic situation in France, the unpopularity of the socialist government lead by French president François Hollande, or anti-immigrant sentiments spreading throughout the whole of Europe. The thesis seeks to find another possible view on the phenomenon by comparing the FN election campaign with those of its main opponents, UMP and PS, and searching for certain differences. This comparison is based on usage of political marketing tools in the campaigns: election posters, advertising spots and profiles on the social network Facebook. The aim of the thesis is therefore to analyse how the French political parties used these tools in their campaigns, and also trying to find certain particularities in how they conducted the election campaigns. Analysis of the 2014 European Parliamentary election in Great Britain

Bachelor thesis Analysis of European Parliament Elections 2014 focuses on topic of the theory of second-order elections which is put into context of the United Kingdom's political system. At first the theory of second-order elections is introduced for using on the examples of British politics. Thesis tries to answer the question whether the European Parliament Elections 2014 could be find as a second-order elections. Text analyzes turnout and results of single british political parties in past European Parliament Elections and compares these statistics to results of European Parliament Elections 2009 and General Elections 2010. Thesis works with three component research criteria which analyzes single hypotheses in way of theory of second- order elections. The results of every single criterion that tend to be used correctly. So thesis leads to conclusion that the European Parliament Elections 2014 could be find as a second order elections.

Media as a Factor of Electoral Apathy in the Czech Republic

The purpose of this thesis is to explore whether the drop in voter turnout between the 2009 and 2014 European Parliament elections, as well as the general apathy toward the politics of the European Union, in the Czech Republic was contributed to by the mass media. Specifically, this thesis will examine the two most read daily newspapers of both 2009 and 2014, Blesk and Mladá Fronta Dnes, and analyze its articles with the use of search words in order to assess whether any change occurred in the way the European Union, its policies and institutions, were presented immediately prior to the 2009 and 2014 European Parliament elections. This will be achieved through the use of content analysis, both quantitative and qualitative, while evaluating the articles in comparative fashion. The thesis will argue that, given the essential role of the media as intermediary between the world of politics and the electorate, the portrayal, or lack thereof, of the European Union is a factor in explaining the electoral dynamics of the country. Czech Pirate Party in the European context

This bachelor thesis deals with the role of the Czech Pirate Party in the Czech Republic and also in whole Europe. It focuses on the formation of the party and its programme. Based on the programme analysis, it classifies the party in the political spectrum and the party families concept. It introduces the role of the Czech Pirate Party in the forming of the international pirate organizations and its members' standpoint. It analyses European Parliament 2014 election results and points out the position of the party in a whole European scale.
