Public Awareness of Selective Mutism

This bachelor thesis deals with elective mutism. Attention was paid to the definition, symptomatology and speech therapy intervention of this communication disorder, and above all to the analysis of the level of public awareness of elective mutism. Analyzing the level of public awareness of elective mutism was the main research objective of this paper. The motivation for investigating this issue was the fact that there is currently no research survey in the Czech Republic that would map the public's awareness of elective mutism. However, a higher level of public awareness of this disorder has a positive effect on early diagnosis, and early diagnosis positively affects the success of subsequent therapy. The research was conducted using quantitative research, with a questionnaire used as a research tool. The administration of the questionnaire was carried out online, data collection was completed after obtaining 200 responses. The obtained data were processed in the MS Excel program. Subsequently, two predetermined hypotheses were tested, one of them saying that the level of elective mutism awareness dependents on the field of education of the respondents was confirmed. Speech therapy and intervention of pupils with a diagnosis of elective mutism

The topic of the diploma thesis is speech therapy and intervention of pupils with elective mutism. The thesis is structured into four chapters. The theoretical framework is presented in three chapters, the fourth one is an empirical part of the thesis. The first theoretical chapter describes the concept of communication and the definitions of basic terms, such as speech communication, speech, language, language levels of speech, socialization and social interaction. There are also listed terminological definition of elective mutism, etiology, classification and symptomatology. The second theoretical chapter is based on the issues of speech therapy and intervention and its system in the Czech Republic in terms of diagnostics, differential diagnostics, the process of therapy, prevention and prognosis. The third chapter describes the multidisciplinary approaches and support of the pupils with elective mutism in terms of family and school education. The role of the teacher is also described and at the end of the chapter indicated the help to the pupil in basic education. The fourth empirical chapter deals with qualitative research, realized by case studies, which were supplemented by other research techniques. The thesis deals with the elective mutism in a child of pre-school age. In the theoretical part describes the problems of mutism, i.e. elective definition, etiology and clinical presentation. Further possibilities of differential diagnosis and intersectoral cooperation in diagnosis and therapy of elective mutism. Part of the therapy are also options for reeducation in children. The empirical part of the Bachelor thesis is focused on the case study of a boy with diagnosed elective mutism. On the basis of the information collected, the methodology has been developed for access to a child with impaired communication skills, with emphasis on elective mutism. This methodology provides basic information about elective mutism, its detection, basic techniques of access to a child with the disorder and possible access to the parents of a child with elective mutism.
