"Pole dance teaches femininity, but it can be incredibly masculine": A gender analysis of the pole dance phenomenon
Čákorová, Marie ; Soares Moura, Eva (advisor) ; Moskvina, Yuliya (referee)
In sport, as in society, men and women face different expectations related to their gender roles. This also applies to pole dance, which is a sport dominated by women and is generally perceived as feminine. In recent years, however, it has become more and more popular among men. As a result, ingrained stereotypes about the presence of men in pole dance, and about the sport itself, are possible to change. Nevertheless, what is the relationship between gender and the self-presentation of dancers, and to what extent are they themselves involved in reinforcing, reproducing, and breaking down gender stereotypes within this community? This bachelor thesis observes doing gender in pole dance and aims to answer these questions. The work draws on the the theory of West and Zimmerman, who describe an impact of gender expectations on individual behavior and thus the process of doing gender. For a detailed understanding of this phenomenon, data were collected through qualitative semi- structured interviews. Those were realized with six male communication partners and four female partners, who actively participate in pole dance and have several years of experience performing. For evaluation of these interviews, the methods of thematic analysis were used. Results show the following. First, the...

Historical fencing represents an interesting leisure time activity that thousands of people in the Czech Republic devote, most of them joining historical fencing groups. There is a relatively strong hierarchy within a number of groups. The main goal of the thesis is to reveal mechanisms, by which the hierachies in the particular group are generated, maintained, how these hierarchies affect the behaviour of individuals and how an individual can move up and down in the group's hierarchy. The secondary goal of the thesis is to focus on the role of gender in relation to group hierarchies and how is gender done in a group. To get the data qualitative research methods of participant observation and semi-structured interviews are used. The thesis is supplemented by a photo documentation. Theoretical framework used in the research is mainly Bourdieu's capitals and the subculture capital. In addition the concept of authenticity became important during the research. Based on the data the most important capitals are objecitified and embodied subcultural capital, physical capital and social capital. For subcultural studies is very typical the engagement in the subculture, in this case subcultural engagement proved to be important mainly for the non-fighting members of the group. Within the group gender has not...
Gender blending and queer performativity in the music videos of Lady Gaga
Sekyrová, Karolína ; Sloboda, Zdeněk (advisor) ; Martinová, Marta (referee)
This bachelor thesis examines how queer performativity and gender blending are shown in the music video clips of Lady Gaga. The thesis attemp to find and analyse through the means of the semiotic analysis and explain their meaning. The thesis is based on theoretical gender definition and on two constructivism concepts: Doing gender by West and Zimermann and gender performativity by Judith Butler. The thesis employs the queer concept as the reconstruction of sexual minorities but also as an analytic lens that deconstructs the normative social structure. The author defines the various elements leading to gender blending and queer performativity in four music videos clips and concluded that Lady Gaga repeatedly violates gender stereotypes and disturbs the majority view on heteronormative social settings by using specific videos elements representing different kinds of sexuality in her music videos.
