The 2016 Coup d'Etat Attempt in Turkey and its Impact in Kosovo: A look into the Media Discourse Surrounding the 2018 Gulenist Extraditions and the Resulting Turkish-Kosovo Relationship.
Day, Ryan ; Žíla, Ondřej (advisor) ; Hornát, Jan (referee)
The overall purpose of this thesis is three folded; to analyze Turkey's constantly changing influence since the 1990s in the Western Balkans, consider the failed 2016 coup attempt in Turkey and the anti-Gülenist campaign by Erdogan in the region (with Kosovo as the focus), and to delve into the international and local media discourse surrounding the deportations of suspected Gülenist from Kosovo with the help of Turkish intelligence on March 29, 2018. Employing a mixed methodology approach, the author evaluated existing sources in an attempt to answer the research question; "In what ways has the 2016 Coup d'état attempt in Turkey resonated in the Western Balkans, and how did the local and international media discourse portray the 2018 Gülenists extraditions from Kosovo to Turkey?" The research holds that while the media discourse displayed Kosovo and Turkey's actions as being in violation of numerous international laws, the issue was quickly swept away from the spotlight. Since 2012 (the beginning of the Erdogan-Gülen rift) and especially following the 2016 failed coup attempt in Turkey, Erdogan has been emboldened by his growing personal relationships with key Balkan politicians. This has led to continued demands (thus far met with little success) that Western Balkan states arrest and deport...
The image of Czechoslovakia after the coup d'etat of 1973 in Chile and the Czechoslovakian propaganda against the Chilean military regime
Hartman, Matouš ; Opatrný, Josef (advisor) ; Buben, Radek (referee)
The following thesis deals with the question of ideological conflict between the Eastern Bloc and the Chilean military junta. The author of the thesis investigates the media portrayal of Czechoslovakia in Chile and analyses the Czechoslovak media propaganda against the Chilean military government. The qualitative analysis is accompanied by the memories of four Czechs who lived in Chile during the period. The main focus is on the years 1973, 1988 and 1989. The first year marks the beginning of the military dictatorship, the year of the biggest shock. The years 1988 and 1989 mark the end of the nondemocratic governments in both countries, Chile and Czechoslovakia. The daily journals chosen for the analysis were the most important newspapers in the countries of interest. These were El Mercurio and La Segunda in Chile, and Rudé právo and Mladá fronta in Czechoslovakia. The media analysis is accompanied by interviews with Milan Syruček, the foreign editor at Mladá fronta (1973), and Bohuslav Borovička, a Rudé právo reporter in Havana who travelled to Chile in 1988. The thesis offers a theoretical part with a summary of modern Chilean history and the question of ideologies in the Latin American state. There was conservative anticommunism with roots already at the beginning of the 20th century. On the...
The relationship between United Kingdom and Oman in the context of British Persian Gulf policy in the 1970s
Fričová, Kateřina ; Váška, Jan (advisor) ; Kasáková, Zuzana (referee)
The bachelor thesis named The relationship between United Kingdom and Oman in the context of British Persian Gulf policy in the 1970s focuses on an advancement of the relations between UK and the Sultanate of Oman and its role in the counterinsurgency operations in the Omani province of Dhofar. The text is an analysis of the UK-Omani cooperation and while using both the direct and indirect method of historical research, it attempts to answer if the UK-Omani relations were in any sense different to UK's assistance to other Persian Gulf states and why exactly the British government decided to violate the East of Suez withdrawal policy it had previously picked up. Firstly, the thesis describes the history of UK-Omani relations between late 18th century and 1959. Then, it considers the approach of both Wilson and Heath governments to the withdrawal decision and depicts Britain's military presence during Dhofar rebellion. Furthermore, the 1970 coup d'état in Oman and following succession of Sultan Qaboos is awarded a key importance, as well as the joint British-Omani efforts to develop an effective counterinsurgency strategy. Additionally, the Dhofar rebellion's international significance is discussed as there were many other state actors involved apart from the British.
