Women in the Recatholization of the Czech Lands

The thesis addresses the topic of women in the process of the recatholization of Bohemia and focuses mainly on the first half of the 17th century. The author investigated if and how much the experience of women differed from that of men. More than the legislation and newly created norms the application of these directions enlightens the topic of women. Rich material connected to the activity of the recatholization commission and other authorities devoted to the conversion of Czech population was used. Sources of statistical character were used for evaluation of the results of the process. Because of their extent, regional restriction had to be made - we focused on Boleslavsko. In the focus of the thesis were mainly townswomen and lower nobility. One of the most important findings is the fact that the authorities saw women as important as men in the process. Although specific, seemingly more moderate, means for coercion were used in women's case. This flexibility is typical for the Catholic church's approach to women and we are in concord with other researchers, mostly from abroad. The findings also contribute to our knowledge of the process of the recatholization of the Czech lands. Piotr Skarga and his literary work Kazania Sejmowe

The thesis is primarily focused on the person of the Polish Jesuit preacher Piotr Skarga and his most famous work Kazania Sejmowe, 1597. In the introduction of our thesis we deal with the area of The Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth at the turn of 16th and 17th century. We put more detailed emphasis on political and cultural history and we describe life, activities and literary work of Piotr Skarga. In the core of our thesis we analyse the selected parts, elements and themes of the literary work Kazania Sejmowe. Subsequently we compare them with several other central european literary works. The aim of our thesis is to take a closer look at the personality and the literary work that have a firm place in Polish culture and to compere them with other central european literature. Jan Jiří Hering, painter at the beginning of the Counter-Reformation

Jan Jiří Hering, painter at the beginning of the Counter-Reformation This diploma thesis deals with Prague based painter Jan Jiří Hering, whose art refers to the first half of the 17th century. The artist's early style is closely associated with the art inspired by the drawings of the Rudolfine Mannerist Era, while the later forms of his paintings show a rather rigid style. It may be presumed that several years spent in Rome during the pontificate of Sixt V. alongside with artistically inspiring atmosphere of Post-Rudolfinian's Prague and consecutive fine art assignments in service of the Catholic Church mainly focused on interior designs, played an important role in developing Hering's artistic expression. As the first Prague painter to begin the Counter-Reformation, Hering dealt with a new kind of fine art assignments in various ways. On the one hand, he used classical patterns to inspire Baroque appearance, dynamism and expression, and on the other hand, he composed pictures of saints according to medieval schemes by combining several scenes into one image space. Given the directly opposed expression of drawing production of the Rudolphine type and the paintings from the period following the Battle of the White Mountain, Hering acts as an artist of two faces. The thesis will attempt to clarify Hering's art and its ties to the first stage of the Counter-Reformation. The research will also focus on the artist's bipolarity in artistic expression with the research for possible parallels and inclusion in the context of Prague's painting scene.

Teresa of Avila and Augustinus: God inside

This thesis deals with the topic of God's presence in human's soul in the work of St. Teresa of Avila taking into account the same idea in St. Augustine's work. It situates the author in the context of social changes in the 16th century and then in the literary context. The latter is studied firstly from a diachronic point of view, as a tradition of mystic literature to which both Augustine and Teresa pertain, subsequently from the synchronic point of view, i.e. the Spanish mystic literature of the Golden Age. Also, it depicts the family environment of St. Teresa that led her to the spiritual literature and the chivalric romances, her entering in a monastery and the "second conversion", related to Augustine's Confessions. Afterwards, Teresa's production is described and especially her social position which required obedience towards authorities but also it allowed to share her opinions and enjoy her writing. It is of special interest that Teresa could reach the work of Augustine, originally written in Latin. Therefore, first her reading is presented as an aggregate including both spiritual and chivalric literature, then in particular the production of Augustine, to which Teresa referred only rarely but during the entire creative career. The Enlightenment and its Impact on the National and Spiritual Formation of People in the Czech Lands during 18th and 19th Century

This master thesis deals with the spiritual progress pointing to a national self-awareness in the Enlightenment era from the beginning until 1848. The Enlightenment is an European phenomenon, which is characterized by a change of thinking, and self-awareness. This idea of tolerance and human emancipation contributed to the reforms of fundamental social, political and ecclesiastical changes. These changes result not only from a philosophical influences, but also from royal reforms during the reign of Maria Theresa and Joseph II in particular. The travels of the prohibited books to Bohemia after the battle of White Mountain in 1620

This bachelor thesis introduces topic of distribution of the prohibited books in the Czech Lands during recatholisation after the Battle of White Mountain. In the first part, author defines the basic terms "prohibited books" and "censorship". The attention is focused on the church censorship, implementation of censorship and censorship measures. In the second part, author discusses origin and history of the prohibited books in the world and in the Czech Lands and origin of their indices. The final part describes the handling of prohibited literature, the possibility of obtaining of the banned books by the Czech readers from foreign countries and circulation of domestic production.
