Unplugged activities for development of computational thinking in the context of non-formal education

This diploma thesis deals with the development of computational and algorithmic thinking in a non-formal education setting, specifically in the conditions of a summer camp activity, which is one of the forms of non-formal education. The thesis verifies by the pedagogical experiment whether it is possible to develop the computational thinking of camp participants, when unplugged activities are included in the programme content. The theoretical part defines the concepts of computational and algorithmic thinking. It also includes property of unplugged methodology. The practical part evaluates the pedagogical field experiment for which 3 sets of unplugged activities and 2 sets of test tools were created. The experiment took place during two summer camp for children from 9 to 18 years old, who were divided into two age groups for testing purposes. In pursuance of the experiment it was found out that the conditions of summer camp activity allow the inclusion of unplugged activities, which represent a method enabling the development of the computational thinking of the camp participants. Programming tools for development of algorithms and programs at elementary school

This thesis monitors the past and current status of the educational area of algorithms and computer programming in elementary school, on the basis of research carried out at the Department of Information Technology and Technical Education of the Pedagogical Faculty of Charles University in Prague. It provides an overview of the different teaching methods and programs that contribute to the development of the skills of pupils, due to their age and skills achieved in this area. In the theoretical part of the thesis are explained the basic concepts of the topic of algorithms and programming, which follows the practical part with the use of these procedures in the ICT lessons and in other school subjects.
Examining the formation of ideas and learning about some programming concepts in the primary school

This diploma thesis maps pupils' understanding about a functional principle of using commands along with testing conditions (IF, IF - THEN, REPEAT - UNTIL, etc.) when creating algorithms. The main aim of the thesis is to design and implement a set of lessons and a teaching approach based on a theory about learning of algorithmic concepts at primary education for pupils (aged in 9-11) with the intention of verifying a functionality of designed teaching procedures and their possible impacts on pupils' understanding. Data was collected through continuous monitoring of pupils' behavioural characteristics, progress and solution of chosen tasks, video recordings of task solving within the suggested unplugged activities, using a virtual tool Code.org for monitoring of a pupils' progress, audio recordings of interview with pupils, and photographs capturing a creation of own blocks of commands set up by a transcription from pupils' mother language into a machine language (programming language) have all been used for a verification process of the designed teaching approach. The lack of published local experience impedes the search for general agreement in basic questions, such as: Is computer science in general education possible? Is it beneficial? What educational goals should it have, what topics should it cover? The goal of this thesis is to offer empirically verified answers to these questions, considering grammar school level (students 15-18 years old) in Czechia. A set of fundamental ideas of computer science has been identified and used to develop an introductory course. The course was repeatedly tested, evaluated and improved, following the design-based research methodology. The level of students' achieve- ments as well as their own view of the novel approach to teach "informatics" was tracked. ABSTRACT: This thesis deals with perceptions of pupils about how computers and computer programs work. The main objective is to inquire of pupils (ISCED-2) about how computer and computer programs work, and what ideas influence them. The theoretical part focuses on the history of the use of computers in teaching and an analysis of current approaches to teaching computer science and programming in the Czech Republic and in selected European countries. The practical part is devoted to mapping concepts of pupils aged 11-14 years involved in a teaching experiment organized at two schools in Prague, the aim of which was to examine the impact of teaching programming in "Scratch" over one semester in relation to pupil's ideas about how a computer works and in terms of the development of pupil's computational thinking. Level of difficulty of assignments and exercises in ICT and cumputing subjects at basic schools

The aim of the thesis is based on the existing approaches to the assessment of the difficulty of the task of teaching with a focus on ICT and computer science to design a methodology for determining the difficulty of the task and verify it on the model examples for elementary schools. The methodology will be to respond to the theoretical background, which are based, in particular, of the parameters, forms, functions, and the specifics of teaching jobs. Other theoretical basis for the analysis of the teaching jobs are from the known taxonomies, Focus group research method and statistical data processing. The empirical part qualitative research including the multi-round testing pupils Elementary school and the analysis of the data obtained.
