Speech Recognition For Selected Languages

This bachelor's thesis deals with recognition of continues speech for three languages - Bulgarian, Croatian and Swedish. There are described basics of speech processing and recognition methods like acoustic modeling using hidden Markov models and gaussian mixture models. Another aim of this work is preparing data for those languages from GlobalPhone database, so they may be used with speech recognition toolkits Kaldi and HTK. With data prepared there are several models trained and tested using Kaldi toolkit.

Interplay Between Nomination Tendencies in the Language of Mass Media. The Case of the Analytical Adjectives

The thesis aims to describe and theoretically explain the range of complex nominal word structures and phrases that evolved in all Slavic languages with staggering productivity during the last decades. In particular, it focuses on the so called analytical adjectives, i.e. formally invariant lexical units mostly of foreign origin that manifest their attributive syntactic role (and the word class they belong to) not through a morpheme but through fixed word order position. The thesis rejects the view that analytical adjectives are first parts of compound words and explores several transitional cases. In more general terms, the thesis explores phenomena that test the boundary between words and phrases, morphology and syntax. It concludes that in Bulgarian there already exists a well established word subclass of analytical adjectives. They have resulted from an originally lexical innovation that has been grammatcalized due to intensive borrowings of words and phrase models mainly from English and their replication. The comparative study of present-day Bulgarian and Czech provides evidence of the strategies that the two genetically related languages use to achieve their nomination goals. Abrreviation in Contemporary Bulgarian language in Comparison with the Czech language

ABBREVIATION IN CONTEMPORARY BULGARIAN LANGUAGE IN COMPARISON WITH THE CZECH LANGUAGE Dissertation work is aimed at confrontation study of abbreviation in Bulgarian in comparison with Czech and at the description of abbreviations as specific language symbols. Contemporary language tendencies and the changes in the field of abbreviation in relation to the language typology are taken into account. The work is dedicated to the grammatical, stylistic and semantic characteristics of the abbreviations, while a substantial part of the confrontation description addresses the graphical and initial abbreviations, which create a central part of the partial system of abbreviation formations. From the confrontational aspect, there is also described the ability of abbreviations to serve as word-formation base for derivatives. The dissertation work also includes the results of socio-linguistic research made by questionnaire method, where the respondents evaluated the abbreviations of an international character and the words containing abbreviated bases implemented into the text written in Cyrillic.

The linguistic analysis of The Apostle of Skopje

The linguistic analysis of The Apostle of Skopje Štefan Pilát The Apostle of Skopje (Skop) is a Macedonian Church Slavonic manuscript, which contains a short Praxapostle. The scribal inscription on the last page places its compilation to the city of Skopje in the year 1313 thus allowing for its inclusion among the north-Macedonian texts. The goal of the present thesis was to evaluate its paleographic, orthographic and phonological characteristics and its morphological and syntactic peculiarities. The established facts were then compared with other north-Macedonian manuscripts and writing traditions of the Ochrid, Preslav, Tarnovo and Raška schools. Another aim was to evaluate how much could the reception of individual scribal norms be impacted by the north-Macedonian dialect and identify the dialect elements of Skop. On this account, I conclude that Skop, while belonging to the circle of north-Macedonian manuscripts and reflecting rather evident influence of the local dialect, remains conservative, especially from the perspective of paleography, orthography and phonology, a feature typical of the older tradition of the Ochrid School. Gallicismes in Bulgarian in the first half of the 20th century

A diachronic study comparing and contrasting French loanwords in Bulgarian during the 1st half of the 20th century. Research material is based on the dictionary of foreign words by Stefan Mladenov Речник на чуждите думи в българския език с обяснения за происхода и състава им (1932) and the contemporary dictionary Речник на чуждите думи в българския език (PERNIŠKA 2007). Words are compared and contrasted from the lexical, semantic, phonetic and morphological point of view. The results depict the role of French in the Bulgarian society, the evolution of the Bulgarian lexicology and the formal adaptation of the loanwords in the Bulgarian language system. The thesis also sums up current research of the French influence in the Bulgaria.

Bulgarian-Czech Dictionary Database Project

In connection with the successful international cooperation of the Institute of the Czech Language of the ASCR, v. v. i., (ICL) with the Institute for the Bulgarian Language of the BAS and the Ľudovít Štúr Institute of Linguistics of the SAS, a section of multilingual lexicography was established at the Department of Modern Lexicology and Lexicography of the ICL, which since 2008 has dealt with the confrontation research of Czech lexis in comparison with selected Slavic languages (Slovak, Bulgarian and Slovenian). One of the dictionary databases which is currently being prepared in this section is a Bulgarian-Czech dictionary database constructed using wiki-based internet collaboration system. In the article, we outline the basic conceptual features of this dictionary database and present the topical treatment questions such as the creation of the list of entries and its relation to the microstructure of the entry (in connection with the software resolution of the project).
