This bachelor thesis deals with the topic of coca cultivation regulation attempts in Peru and Bolivia. The main goal is to determine in which aspects are the two policies different and if one of the proposed models can be described as more effective. The author introduces the forming moments of anti-drug policy on the world scale, she continues by conceptualising coca as a plant traditionally used by indigenous population and also a substance that was classified as a narcotic substance by the UN. The author then proposes a comparative analysis of the following aspects: the UNODC data on coca cultivation, the characteristics of the areas of coca cultivation and the role of coca unions in each state. In the last section the historical evolution of anti-drug policies is also explored. The results suggest that the states differ in each of the studied areas. Political participation of indigenous peoples - recent developments in MAS Era Bolivia
Laine, Siru Pauliina
This thesis examines the impact of the actions of the current Bolivian government on the country's indigenous population and their opportunities for political participation. The theoretical part defines factors affecting political participation in general and presents political theories that have had an important role in both, the formation and the current policy of the ruling party, Moviemiento al Socialismo (MAS). The analytical part concentrates on various factors influencing the position of the indigenous peoples and their political role in Bolivia and on the legislative changes that have shaped the situation bringing it to its current state. In the discussion, the different aspects of the issues are combined in order to understand the challenges that the indigenous people face in the present context, after which possible future actions are suggested. The thesis concludes by arguing that the legislative changes and the other actions of the MAS government have affected the indigenous people of Bolivia in positive and negative ways. Their political participation has increased and the situation of human development has improved, but at the same time, issues exist because of incomplete rights to autonomy and problems with protecting indigenous territories from natural resource extraction.
Evo Morales and his political strategy
Sabolová, Ema ; Buben, Radek (advisor) ; Soukup, Jaromír (referee)
The diploma thesis deals with the political strategy of the former Bolivian President Evo Morales (2006-2019). After successfully running in the 2005 presidential election, he became the first Bolivian president of Indian descent. Many authors believe that during the three election periods that Morales served in the country, there was a reversal in his political strategy, after he deviated from his original agenda of indigenous nature and began to pursue a tough extractivist policy focused on the development model of the state. The paper explores key concepts such as Indigenism, Indianism, and Katarismo and their development and influence in Bolivia. The work also tries to define the term developmentalism (development theory), which is of fundamental importance in the study of this issue. Closer attention is also paid to the personality of Evo Morales and his political activity. Based on both primary and secondary sources, we tried to define and explain the political turnaround that was to take place. The work deals with four key areas of Morales policy, the role of gas extraction, the president's relationship with exports, building infrastructure, and the autonomy of Native American movements. Based on the analysis of these areas, we examine whether there has been a political turnaround, which...

Foreign policy as internal political topic: example of Bolivia
Seifertová, Zuzana ; Němec, Jan (advisor) ; Beranová, Marie (referee)
The main topic of the diploma thesis is the foreign policy of Evo Morales in Bolivia between the years 2005 and 2016 and its relation to political development of the country. The thesis consists of the analysis of foreign policy, but also the causes and development of the left turns in Latin America. Additionally, the thesis includes the historic excursion and the study of the political regime after Morales and MAS assumed the power. The main research question is asking whether the goal of the foreign rhetoric and policy of Evo Morales is aiming to strengthen his position in the country and also in the leftist block. The methodology is based in the analysis of Evo ´s governance in the context of left turns in Latin America and mainly the research about the international relations during his governance. The link between his foreign policy and strengthening of the power position of the Bolivian president is examined by the text analysis of the president´s speeches, which is a suitable method to test the frequency of topics that include foreign policy.
The Resource Curse: Mineral Wealth in Latin America
Dulovcová, Iva ; Kučerová, Irah (advisor) ; Parízek, Michal (referee)
Diplomová práce - abstrakt Dulovcová Iva Abstract The main objective of this Master thesis is to test the hypothesis that economic dependence on the export of minerals allows the monopolization of power and thus reduces the possibility of democracy. The hypothesis will be tested on cases of mineral economies in Peru, Bolivia and Chile. The hypothesis is based on the resource curse theory, which assumes a negative relationship between the presence of natural resources, their export, and level of democracy. In this thesis I expanded this theory with mineral economies factor, therefore beyond purely petroleum countries. Another expansion of the theory lies with international dimension that strongly influences events in selected countries. The thesis will analyze cases of Peru, Bolivia and Chile, especially role of natural resources in these countries, but also economic results and role of democracy in selected countries. In this thesis I use qualitative and quantitative elements. Economic and political development will be analyzed on the basis of process analysis method and method of dependence on previous development. The validity of theoretical concept for these cases will be tested on the basis of the compliance method. Quantitative part of the thesis will be based on causal mechanisms designed by Ross. By...

Hoferek, Jan ; Höfer, Karel (advisor) ; Švec, Kamil (referee)
The aim of this Bachelor's thesis is to analyse and compare mixed-member electoral systems and their consequences in cases of Bolivia, Germany and New Zealand. The text is divided into three chapters. The first chapter introduces mixed-member electoral systems in general, existing research in this area, main variables of mixed-member electoral systems, and their key typologies by Massicote & Blaise and Shugart & Wattenberg. In the second chapter, causes of electoral reforms, their circumstances, main actors and their preferences are analysed. The description of individual cases is followed by cross-comparison. The final chapter concerns itself with the consequences of electoral reforms and their influence on party and political systems, as well as with changes in the candidate selection process or their individual characteristics. The description is also followed by comparison among researched countries. The main focus of this comparison is on selected characteristics of political systems: volatility, voter turnout, disproportionality and effective number of parliamentary parties. These are calculated with established statistical tools: Gallagher index, Pedersen index and Laakso-Taagepera index.
