Symbolic notation in selected 16th century arithmetic books from Czech environment: an example of George Goerl
Fantová, Anna ; Zdichynec, Jan (advisor) ; Kvasz, Ladislav (referee)
A primary objective of this bachelor thesis is to characterize mathematical symbolism (the use of substitute signs of usually fixed meaning for a description of objects and processes) in arithmetic books from the 16th century written in the Czech language with a primary focus on the foundations of arithmetic. Firstly, I categorize the period notation based on its form and purpose by analysing the historical sources. Then, I compare the symbolism described in the individual arithmetic books and connect the discovered differences in time. The analysis focuses on an arithmetic book by George Goerl from approximately the second third of the monitored period. Futhermore, I elaborate on an earlier arithmetic book by Andreas Klatovský and a different one by Benes Optát. In general, I arrange the arithmetic books chronologically. Another aim of this paper is to evaluate the above-mentioned arithmetic books from a formal point of view. Therefore, I touch on the contents of each of them, ordering, and literary and pictorial paratexts. I am also interested in particular exercises and examples as sources of knowledge of the everydayness in the age of the authors. I evaluate the suitability of their way of notation and problem solving in some exercises in comparison with today's approach. Throughout the whole...
The castle in Komařice - its contruction changes and the culture-historical value
KUBOVCOVÁ, Anežka
Komařice Castle - its architectural changes and cultural and historical significance The Renaissance Chateau of Komařice is a building of high quality and demanding stonework, which has largely preserved its original Renaissance appearance to this day. It was built by Jiřík Kořenský from Terešov together with his wife Kristýna Dráchovská from Dráchov around 1565. The bachelor thesis deals with the construction history of the building, in its first part, gradually introducing the Komařice owners in each periods. In the subsequent description of the building, it captures and analyzes the individual important elements of the castle in detail. It does not omit other buildings that originally belonged to the castle, especially the granary, former brewery and other farm buildings in the castle complex. The following part of the work presents the reconstruction of the regional significance of Komařice castle in the early modern period. It also points out the importance of the building in comparison with other Renaissance buildings in Bohemia, which, like here, probably used the treatises on architecture by Sebastian Serlio. The work draws attention to the serious loses that the building suffered after the change of the owners during the land reforms in the 1920 s. The last part of the work summarizes the monumental values of the castle and outlines the future fate of the building.
Sixteenth-century Eight-language Translation Dictionary (1586) and Subject-centred Analysis of its Lexicon
Ptáčková, Vladimíra ; Švermová, Dagmar (advisor) ; Šustová, Magdaléna (referee)
The object of this diploma thesis is an octalingual dictionary from 16th century from the collections of the Pedagogical Museum J.A. Komenského in Prague. The title page of this dictionary is missing and therefore the origin, the author and the range of users, who the dictionary was intended for, are not known. The aim of this diploma thesis was to confirm or disprove the hypothesis that the dictionary should have served tradesmen and travellers. The methods used were translation, language analysis of the phrase-book and the thematic analysis of the contents of the dictionary. The theoretical part of the diploma thesis deals with lexicography. It introduces the definition of a dictionary and various types of dictionaries with the most attention paid to translational dictionaries. Thereafter, the development of Czech lexicography from its beginning until nowadays is presented. The theoretical section also contains some facts about phrase-books. Furthermore, the time of 16th century is described with the aim to present the period when the dictionary was produced. Regarding the hypothesis mentioned above, the linguistic analysis has brought these results. The dictionary should have served not only tradesmen but a wide range of users because of the general vocabulary and because it is partly mentioned...
The Church of England: comparison of its development during the reigns of Henry VIII and Edward VI
Vozabulová, Diana ; Suchánek, Drahomír (advisor) ; Drška, Václav (referee)
This bachelor thesis aims to compare the development of the Church of England during the reign of Henry VIII and his son Edward VI. In the first part of the thesis there is a brief overview of Henry's and Edward's reigns. The Regency Council that governed the realm while Edward was a child is also mentioned. The work also deals with Henry's divorce from Catherine of Aragon, as it led to the break with Rome. Furthermore, this thesis is concerned with the documents and acts issued by the parliament that established the royal supremacy over the Church of England in the 1530's. The second part of the thesis focuses on the process of establishing the doctrine and liturgical use during the 1530's and 1540's. Important differences between the development during Henry's and Edward's reigns are compared. These differences concern especially the doctrine of Eucharist and communion or the attitude to clerical celibacy and marriages. Individual chapters of the second part of the thesis are concerned with particular events that are crucial for the development of the Church of England, e.g. the Dissolution of the Monasteries, the suppression of the chantries, English translation of the Scripture or the publication of the Book of Common Prayer. One of the main aims of this works is also to examine the position of...

The diploma thesis Provincial Courts in 16th Century Portrayals in Bohemia deals with portrayals of the higher provincial courts sessions in Bohemia in the 16th century as well as with their typology. The aim of this thesis is to map these portrayals, compare them and set them into the cultural-historical context.
The Work of Fabián Puléř
Svitáková, Kristina ; Hlaváčková, Jana Hana (advisor) ; Zlatohlávek, Martin (referee)
This thesis deals with Fabian Puléř, an illuminator who lived in the 2nd half of 16th century in Prague, and about his workshop in the Old Town. The main theme is the graduals and their fragments, which were made in his shop or are believed to be made there (the Metropolitan St. Vitus Temple Gradual, the Gradual of Čáslav, the Gradual of Žlutice, three illuminations from the collection of National Gallery in Prague, the two-part St. Valentine's Gradual from the Old Town, the fragments of Kaňkovský Gradual, the Gradual of Louny owned by Jan Táborský of Klokotská Hora, the Gradual of Český Brod), their description and cataloguization. Apart of critically rewieving the literation on the subject to this day, my thesis follows the life of Fabian Puléř regarding archival sources and also influences and impulses behind his work. It also contains crucial chapter about iconography of utraqistic musical manuscripts and about the litterateur brotherhoods, who ordered these hymnic books.
Oldtown's gradual (NK ČR, XVII.A.40), 1561-1567, from the manufactory of Jan Taborsky of Klokotska Hora
Součková, Ema ; Kubík, Viktor (advisor) ; Jarošová, Markéta (referee)
Oldtown's gradual The aim of this work is a monographic elaboration of the Oldtown's gradual (XVII.A.40), from 1561 to 1567, in the context of the work of Jan Taborsky of Klokotska Hora, with the emphasis on connotation of Žlutice gradual. The work elaborates and critically appraises the literature about the genesis and decor, deeply analyses its illuminations (through formal and iconographic analysis) and gives basic orientation in questions of analogies of its decor. Another goal of this work is a summarization of the decor of Oldtown's gradual and elaborated analysis of its illuminations. Oldtown's gradual is one of the best Renaissance manuscripts. The penman was Jan Taborsky of Klokotska Hora; chapter 2.1. deals with his life and production. Matous Ornys of Lindperk was the limner; chapter 2.2. deals with his work. Indisputably, he belongs to the best limners of the 16th century. The decor of the gradual is described in the chapter 4.2. Illuminations of gradual have conventional scheme of choral manuscripts. A lot of analogies are to be found in the medieval and also Renaissance manuscripts. There are elements of medieval literary paintwork, but also fully Renaissance elements: perfect linear perspective and high-quality scenery. Oldtown's gradual is one of the most beautiful and one of the...
