Consumer Society and Representation of Happiness in Advertising

The bachelor thesis deals with advertising representation of happiness in the context of consumer society theory. The aim of this work is to find out what possibilities of interpretation of happiness are in connection with consumer products, which mediate advertisements to their viewers. TV and online advertisements related to the environment of the Czech Republic are examined. The first part of the thesis deals with theoretical basis for themes of consumer society, advertising and happiness. Consumer society is conceptualized as hedonically oriented and established in the materialistic concept of the world. Advertising is seen as the main ideological tool of consumer society that is used to transform values. The happiness is seen from both perspectives, the hedonic and eudaimonic. Due to the abstract nature of happiness, constitutive elements of happiness are derived from expert discourse and serve as a conceptual framework and a default category for analysis. The default categories are social relationships, productive activity and health. The qualitative based empirical part subsequently processed the representation in advertising. The Book Song of Songs as an Answer to Qohelet's Vanity

This thesis is concerned with, in the words of Song of Songs, finding an appropriate answer to Qohelet's vanity - vanity of a human life and things that inherently come with it, as Qohelet himself proclaims in his book. The first chapter introduces the Book of Qohelet and aims to capture the main themes of vanity and transience, while also providing the ways out from this situation, as presented by Qohelet. The second chapter introduces the reader to the Song of Songs book while also describing its content which concerns the interpretation of love between a man and a woman. The third chapter brings forward efforts of the author and the main themes and conclusions of the book are analysed. This allows - in the conclusion of this thesis - to answer the question of whether the love in the Songs of Songs is a possible answer to Qoheleth's vanity - the transience of a human life, as brought out by Qohelet in his work.

Media Recipes for Happiness

This diploma thesis with the title Media Recipes for Happiness focuses on media representation of happiness in the Czech Republic. In the first part, the thesis outlines essential media theories, with emphasis on media representations and on the construction of reality, then it conceptualises happiness in the sociological viewpoints on it in its two opposing perspectives - happiness as a hedonistic short-term satisfaction connected to owning things, and happiness as an eudaimonic long-term state of inner satisfaction. The second methodical part provides a description of used research methods, namely qualitative content analysis, and selection of specific representatives of Czech print media. The third and last analytical part of this thesis describes how the representation of happiness looks on the pages of lifestyle magazines Elle, Žena a život a Blesk pro ženy and how each magazine differs in their representation.

Philosophical aspects of education in dialogue between Wolfgang Brezinka and Zygmunt Bauman

The text of this work is primarily based on the works of Wolfgang Brezinka, focusing on the philosophy of education and on many sociological works by Zygmunt Bauman, which are cited for better orientation in the philosophical-educational context of the chapter focusing on the philosophy of education used in the antiquity The aim was to present the reader with at least a brief awareness of the individual aspects of the philosophy of education as presented by Brezinka and to supplement it with the possible aspects that can be taken from Bauman, who primarily focuses on exploring the socio-cultural phenomena of the modern society. Gradually, the essential characteristics, features, and characteristics that accompanied the upbringing in antiquity are presented, just as the educational aims and beliefs in relation to the upbringing that is presented by Brezinka. Furthermore, there are discussed and examined the pitfalls of modernism and postmodernism in relation to personality, culture, society and philosophical-educational possibilities as pointed out by Bauman. Gender gap index and happiness

This bachelor thesis investigates the relationship between the level of gender inequality given by The Global Gender Gap Index (GGGI) and women's happiness. Using the cross-sectional data from The World Values Survey from 22 different countries, the main goal was to explore the possible existence of a positive relationship between the GGGI index (which reflects the rate of gender differences in particular country where lower values represent higher rate of gender inequality) and relative happiness of women in comparison with happiness of men. The work introduces not only the variables that are considered to be the main determinants of happiness according to the current studies, but also specific indexes related to the issue of gender inequality. All in all, the work is comprised of seven models working with the whole dataset of 22 countries, six models working with the data divided by gender and two different models created for each of four groups into which the countries were divided based on their rate of GGGI index. The Book of Qohelet in the Context of Ancient Philosophy

The aim of the bachelor thesis is to analyze The Book of Qohelet in the Context of Ancient Philosophy. The first part of the thesis introduces the book itself, focusing on its title, authorship, place of origin and defining themes in particular. The thesis continues with a basic characteristic of four ancient philosophies: the philosophy of 6th and 5th century BC and its main herald, Heraclitus, the Aristotle philosophy and Hellenistic philosophy, namely Stoicism and Epicureanism. What follows is the comparison of the listed philosophies and the book itself. The thesis concentrates on finding similarities between the book and those contemporary philosophies. It also hopes to answer the question of whether the influential parts of those philosophies are somehow reflected in the book itself.

Comparison of Aristotle's concept of eudaimonia and chosen modern concepts of a good life

This thesis deals with concepts of good life. Good life could be comprehended as happy life or eudaimonic life. It is divided into three parts. First part is about philosopher Aristotle's concept eudaimonia. I worked with his book Nicomachean Ethics translated to czech language by Antonín Kříž. Second part describes conception of good life of Martin E. P. Seligman and Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi's conception flow. Third part compares conceptions described in the previous parts. Goals of this thesis are to explain the concept of Aristotle's eudaimonia. Then to explain some basic points in positive psychology, then to compare Aristotle's concept of eudaimonia with Seligman's and Csikszentmihalyi's concept of positive psychology.

The role of happiness, personal welfare in assisting professions

This bachelor thesis presents a multidisciplinary view of the role of happiness in assisting professions, which also takes into account their own practice. It outlines various aspects, both practical and psychological, sociological, philosophical which are linked by theoretical considerations. The aim of this thesis is to clarify how important a worker's sense of happiness is, the well-being of a mentally challenging profession such as helping - whose deficiency can result in burnout syndrome. The resource to achieve the goal was through perused literature, which is part of the thesis, as well as the research, which was thematically divided into two parts. The research was anonymous and was conducted in the form of a questionnaire survey. The first part was focused on the reason why the workers chose this job and whether their profession was giving them a sense of happiness. The second round of questions concerned information on burnout syndrome and techniques to prevent it.

Happiness and Income

This thesis examines relationships between average national subjective well-being and three economic factors-income (expressed as gross domestic product [GDP] per capita), unemployment, and economic freedom-applying fixed effects, random effects, and correlated random effects methods on panel data for countries worldwide, which are divided into three groups based on their level of development. Two measures of subjective well- being-feeling of happiness, and life satisfaction-are used, and the outputs are then compared for both. The results indicate that all three factors have a significant impact on subjective well-being, and GDP per capita seems to be the strongest determinant thereof. Moreover, the findings differ depending on whether life satisfaction or happiness is used as the measure of subjective well-being. The effects of GDP per capita and economic freedom are higher on the former than the latter.
