From construction of media reality towards s social stereotype in the printed advertising

Diploma thesis "From construction of media reality towards a social stereotype in the printed advertising" deals with stereotypical portrayals of people emerging in Czech magazine production in the first decade of 21st century. The first part of the thesis describes the theoretical fundamentals of the field, including the theory of the social construction of reality by Berger and Luckmann. In its second part, using the sample of magazines Týden, Reflex, Maxim (formerly Quo), Cosmopolitan and Žena a život, the thesis surveys the occurrence of stereotypical depictions in the period from 2000 to 2008, materialized using semiotic codes. These depictions are named, described and it is shown how are they used in the process of constructing a complex communicate. This thesis is trying to point out the disproportion in the depictions of males and females in advertising and (based on previous classifications available) comes up with an original classification of the stereotypical depictions. The thesis also describes the results of a quantitative content analysis in order to find out about the occurrence frequency of the stereotypes in pictorial texts used in advertising production and it segments the occuring stereotypes in three categories according to the frequency of their occurrence. Mythology of Reflex magazine cover pages

This diploma work examines a product from the field of print media - front pages of magazine Reflex. Method of mythological analysis is used, which has been in qualitative research of media content applied for half of a century and is considered to be one of the traditional methods used by media studies. Unlike other dissertations in this thematic area this work does not only analyze visual or lexical contents of cover pages, but also focuses on participation of those contents in the development of myth. The work begins with introduction of key theoretical background and resulting terms used in following analyzes describing effects of myths in individual covers. Then the summary brings the interpretation and explanation of described phenomena. The work focuses to decipher myths contained in the first message which the Reflex magazine week after week addresses to his readers -the title page of individual issues. It analyses how the magazine constructs a system of myths, by which ideology can impact on its readers. Aim of this dissertation is not only to describe the process by which the myths capture a variety of signs and fill them with their own meanings, but also a dialectical relationship between myths and stereotypes or ideologies which stand in their background.
Reflex magazine online:progress in journalism?

The goal of this Bachelor's dissertation named Reflex Magazine Online: Progress in journalism? is to compare the printed and the online version of Reflex magazine. The first part of the thesis is divided into three chapters: in the first chapter, the history of Reflex magazine is described shortly as well as the important members of the editorial staff are named. The second chapter is focused on the online version of the magazine, while the future of the Internet and new media are discussed in the third chapter. The research part of this thesis is based on comparasion of the online and printed content. Additionally, a public poll among the Reflex's readers was performed, which was focused on readers' perception of the printed and online version of the magazine. The supplement includes an interview with Josef Klíma, where the history of founding is described in detail.
How did new technologies and start of digitalization i nfuence the work of photojournalists

This Bachelor thesis is concerned with how new technologies and the spread of digitalization influenced the work of photojournalists and to what measure it changed their professional habits. The emphasis is placed on personal experience in regards to the change of the digital photographic technique of photojournalists within the magazine Reflex, which is one of the most expressive pictorial media in the Czech market. In the first part there is an exploration of what is classical and digital photography and a comparison between the two mediums, and in the second part we see the concrete manifestations of those changes which digitalization brought to the practice of photojournalism. The final part is dedicated to three photographers, Tomáš Tesař, Petr Jedinák and Jan Šibík, and the influence of digitalization on their professional life. Included as a supplement are interviews, which the author of this work made in the end of the year 2008 with Tesař and Jedinák. The aim of this work is to uncover all the changes that the digitalization of photojournalistic photography brought and at the same time to determine the impact of these changes.
