Peter Handke and Wolfgang Bauer as the leading figures of Avant-garde Literature in 1960s Austria
Stejskal, Zdeněk ; Tvrdík, Milan (advisor) ; Zbytovský, Štěpán (referee)
2. Summary Austrian avant-garde literature is nowadays considered an integral part of German literary history. Focusing on the avant-garde's early stage of the 1960s, the thesis seeks to look into (a) the conditions which gave rise to the progressive literature in the Austria of that time, and (b) its concrete manifestations in the works of the young authors. The opening part explains the origins of such a radical approach to form and content across literary genres. After 1945, Austrian culture and arts did not face the uncertain choice of literature in Germany, where another parting of the ways came in 1947, with the fundamentally different approaches between the West and the East. In Austria the initial debate was more efficient: the official policies clearly aimed at re-establishment of the modern and stable values as presented by the Austrian interwar great story-tellers such as Robert Musil and Hermann Broch. These efforts, however, were soon to become counterproductive. The conservative, and cumbersomely obsolete policies of the grand coalition between the social democratic SPÖ party and the newly established ÖVP party failed to provide fertile land for young authors, who grew up in the 1960s. It was these authors in particular who felt that the cultural and political atmosphere was extremely rigid,...

Melicharová, Vanda ; Hadwiger, Julia Nina Vanessa (advisor) ; Zbytovský, Štěpán (referee)
Annotation: The aim of this thesis is to draw attention to the personality of Prague German literature, Johannes Urzidil, to his life and work, in the light of authors life philosophy, that connects his prosaic, lyrical and journalistic texts. The thesis points out the important events that influenced the author's way of life and above all his intellectual world, the source of his work. From the extensive Urzidil's work, the part dealing with the theater issues is described. For this purpose, three articles published in the press within the period 1920 - 1940 are chosen. They are dedicated to the issue of the Prague German Theater, illustrated the work of its prominent personalities, cover the theater critiques of the mentioned seasons and reflect the cultural significance of theater for the public. Thematically, the articles belong to the framework of the historical efforts of the German people living in the Lands of the Bohemian Crown (and since 1918 in Czechoslovakia), to build a German National Theatre in Prague. This framework is based on the text of Jitka Ludvová "Nationaltheater und Minderheitentheater. Ideen und Theaterpraxis." This thesis also elucidates Urzidil's view of the theater in the theoretical platform and finally explains his views on the art in general. This subject is as well based on...

Nietzsche and Kafka
Král, Matěj ; Petříček, Miroslav (advisor) ; Vojvodík, Josef (referee) ; Zbytovský, Štěpán (referee)
This dissertation deals with the relations between the philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche and the literary work of Franz Kafka. It particularly focuses on the following issues: The uprootedness of (not only modern) human existence and the instability of interpretation of any phenomenon. It is further concerned with the themes of salvation, suffering and death. The indistinguishability of life and death, God, the death of God, and the relationship to a transcendent authority are also discussed. Moreover, the dissertation examines the concepts of the sublime and the noble in nature and in human existence, especially with regard to the relation between an individual and their community. The unjustifiability of the power of judging, uncertainty and the value of suspension of judgment are analyzed as well. It comments also on the topics of the end of life, the end of history and the conception of time exempt from the expectation of an end. Furthermore, it addresses the relations of Nietzsche and Kafka to the present and to the possible future of the world (primarily with reference to the organization of a communication space, to religion, to the concept of the sacred, and to the potential changes of human nature). The...
Thomas Mann's Myth Concept and Ivan Olbracht's sub-Carpathian Proses
Zitová, Olga ; Holý, Jiří (advisor) ; Zbytovský, Štěpán (referee)
This thesis deals with a myth concept in Thomas Mann's and Ivan Olbracht's work. In regard to the tertium comparationis, which is myth, Mann's novels Joseph and His Brothers (Joseph und seine Brüder) and Doctor Faustus (Doktor Faustus) as well as Olbracht's novels The Bitter and the Sweet (Nikola Šuhaj loupežník) and Valley of Exile (Golet v údolí) are analysed. The concepts of these two authors are being compared both on a genetic level, which includes a possible influence of the tetralogy Joseph and His Brothers on Olbracht's work, and on a typological level. The second one includes analogies, which are independent of the possible direct influence. The thesis is methodological based on interpretation of fictional texts and their continuous comparison considering a literary-historical context and cultural-historical background of that time. Especially in some details, it can be considered that Thomas Mann had a direct influence on Olbracht's work in case of both of the novels. A number of analogies have been found, which exemplify a resemblance between the authors but which don't deny that Olbracht was an autonomous and creative personality at the same time. The specific myth concept of both authors harmonise with a period tendency in the modern literature.
