"To be at fate's disposal" The life of the Czech doctor and politician, Emanuel Engel (1844-1907)
Procházka, David ; Velek, Luboš (advisor) ; Lenderová, Milena (referee)
The thesis captures the career of the Czech doctor and politician, Emanuel Engel (1844-1907). The aim of the thesis is to introduce this as yet little known figure from the Czech political scene in the second half of the 19th century in the whole range of his most important activities. Five chapters darify which social background Engel came from, follow the period of his education, his educational activities abroad as well as his medical and then political career, which climaxed with his work as the chairman of the Young Czech Party in the Imperial Council in the 1880s and 1890s. The thesis is mainly based on Engel's written estate, stored in the Literary archive at the Monument for National Literature in Prague and is enriched by information gained from many other complementary sources. This is the first extensive biography, which captures the whole period of Engel's life.
Takeover of Austrian gendarmery by Czechoslovak state in 1918-1919
Klečacký, Martin ; Velek, Luboš (advisor) ; Šedivý, Ivan (referee)
SYNOPSIS This paper deals with the process of taking over the Gendarmerie of the Hapsburg monarchy and its implementation into the structures of the new Czechoslovak state. The paper is divided into four parts, first providing with a brief introduction to the creation and development of the Corps in the Austrian monarchy until 1918, a more detailed insight being dedicated to the territory of the Czech lands. The remaining chapters describe the process of transformation of the force, its adaption to the new political, social and national conditions. The attention is being paid to the German speaking troopers since they were considered to have the greatest problems in adjusting to the new situation; then the paper focuses on the lack of staff in the force and consequently on the measures the government was compelled to take in order to face the growing criminality rate and the social tensions both in cities and industrial regions. Last but not least, the focus shifts to the perception of the "new" gendarmes by the Czech population, its interaction with other authorities and also to the attempts to alter the Corps to fit better the new democratic state. Key words: gendarmerie - Czechoslovakia - nationalities
A lawmaker for life. Czech members of the Austrian House of Peers (1879-1918) between politics and prestige
Pavlíček, Tomáš ; Galandauer, Jan (referee) ; Velek, Luboš (advisor)
The author of this paper researches a subject new to Czech historiography - that of Czech life peers in the Austrian parliament between 1879 - 1918. He attempts to do it not only on the level of archive research, but also parliamentarism (the idea, foundation and operation of the House of Peers), political strategies (nominating candidates for peers), social stratification (social classes represented), social promotion (acquiring symbolic capital), political culture (perception of politics and the position of the peers by themselves and the society), and methodology. The author asks the question of what approach to choose for the research of the peers' lifestyle and their parliamentary identities. The latter differed from the political thinking and political behaviour of the members of the lower house in the following respects: less active up to completely uninvolved parliamentary career, apolitical activity in one's own occupation, office and one's own nation, appreciation of the individual's career and his merits to the society by being awarded an order, becoming a nobleman, and gaining political power in the form of the peer's prestige. Attention is drawn to the introduction of the general, equal and direct voting rights in Cisleithania in 1906, which remarkably increased the House of Peers' political...
History of the town Moravské Budějovice in 1881-1918
Beroun, Zdeněk ; Velek, Luboš (referee) ; Kvaček, Robert (advisor)
Diplomová práce pojednává o politickém a spolkovém životě v Moravských Budějovicích v letech 1881 - 1918.
The status of woman in the work of Teréza Novaková
Slámová, Dana ; Velek, Luboš (referee) ; Kvaček, Robert (advisor)
Tereza Novakova was a significant personality of Czech culture at the turn of 19th and 20th century. She devoted her life to art and journalism, took part in the feminist movement and was deeply concerned in etnographic studies. My baccalaureate work is specialized in Novakova's fictional and journalistic work. The first section is dedicated to Karolina Svetla's influence on Tereza Novakova since in her eyes she represented not only a pattern but she meant for her a lot as her friend and adviser. Next two essential sections show the portrait of woman in author's publicistic and fictional work. Especially through her journalistic activity Novakova reacted to some aspects of the contemporary social evolution where she focused her attention first of all to the three primary areas of emancipatory efforts - education, occupation and woman suffrage. The part concerning the fictional literature refers to the work of rural realism as a historical source. The aim of this chapter using the means of micro-social probe is to describe woman's position in rural background with an accent on the insight into the mind, attitude and values of individual.
Sacrificing their lives and fortunes? The conservative thought and the issue of selfgovernment in political strategies of the Bohemian nobility after 1848
Georgiev, Jiří ; Hlavačka, Milan (advisor) ; Galandauer, Jan (referee) ; Velek, Luboš (referee)
The presented work follows the classical methodology of political history and history of political ideas, although it does not omit interdisciplinary approach especially overlapping the political philosophy and jurisprudence. In the case of the change of political strategies of leading personalities of the conservative nobility, the treatise verifies the feasibility of Klaus Epstein's typology (in some aspects corresponding with the approach of K. von Beyme and partially of S. Neumann too) in the milieu of the Bohemian political conservatism. The conservative political stream came round in the middle of 19th century in the Habsburg monarchy. While the slumberous situation of the Bohemian Diet (Landtag) in the Vormärz period did not enable to develop the competition of platforms, a quick evolution of events in the revolutionary year 1848 accelerated the necessity of the establishment of a conservative grouping. Considering the composition of the historic Estates and the increased risk of the threat to the traditional social structure, we cannot be astonished that the nobility assumed the role of the bearer of efforts how to preserve natural relations of the historically established societas civilis. The specific situation in Bohemia, where extensive ancestral domains with own administrative structures in...
