„Stone in a garden". The Project: The garden of a guest-house (with apartments) in Desná, Jizerské Hory
Žitný, Lukáš ; Vaněk, Jan (advisor) ; Vavřík, Ivan (referee)
Diploma work: Stone in a garden. The Project the garden of a guest-house (with apartments) in Desná, Jizerské Hory. This diploma work deals with the use of stone, a naturally resistant material, in an appropriate and aesthetic manner in the creation of a garden. The first part of this work is theoretical and focuses on the usage of stone in history as a building material for both utilitarian and conceptual buildings. This is followed by a discussion of the use of stone in Asia as a natural material in garden art in contrast to its use in Europe. With a focus on granite in garden and landscape creation, an assessment and classification of the soil (based on its mineral and chemical composition) is necessary to provide accurate information in order to select only stone which has been correctly mined, processed and shaped before its final use. An in-depth knowledge of the large range of stone products available and their correct usage is very important in order to realise a design with permanent garden elements which are both functional and aesthetic with buildings that will last for generations. The practical part of this diploma work - my own project, is a guest-house garden in Desná, Jizerské hory owned by Martin Bajer. The land area is 2000 square metres of which 531 square metres is used by buildings. The terrain, steep and set at 580 - 590 metres above sea level, is located in the mountains with its rich history and views of beautiful nature. The river Bílá Desná flows though the valley of Desná and helped to create the "golden age" of the glass industry in the 2nd half of the 19th century. Unfortunately, Bílá Desná also contributed to the biggest catastrophe of its kind in the Central Europe. In 1916 a dam failure on the river disastrously resulted in 62 fatalities and 100 damaged houses. In 2006 Martin Bajer couldn't resist the beauty of the area and became the owner of what remains of an old guest-house. Reconstruction work began in 2006 and continued for the past 11 years. The redevelopment of the garden is expected to begin soon (2017). Only after understanding the owner's vision for the future of the guesthouse could a design be created. The owner's idea focused on owning a guesthouse with apartments favourable to both families with children as well as more senior guests who prefer to enjoy an active holiday in a natural setting. The garden's design therefore, offers the possibility for guests to use the garden for activities as well as passive relaxation in winter and summer months. Much emphasis is placed on the use of natural materials. Granite is the natural building material most commonly used in this region. Thanks to its unique characteristics - tough and resistant to the elements, granite makes an ideal choice for use in gardens. Its toughness makes it resistant to constant wear by guests and able to cope with difficult mountain conditions, especially heavy snow cover and the extreme temperatures of winter. The result of this practical diploma work is a garden design coupled with a detailed strategy for realising the owners initial concept. The design outlines the space as well as the technical process of building the individual elements with garden structures surrounded by plants - all accomplished within the agreed budget.

Analyses of current use was done by field investigation and social survey, which was done by questioner. Other information was collected by personal interviews with local representatives and park users. Requirements of local users were collected as well. Design of selected area composes the last part of the theses. Concept of new park layout comes out from characteristics creating current state and is inspired by historical context. At the same time, it is based on requirements of its users. Presented design is drawn up as case study, which is supported by representative sections and visualizations. This part covers design of crucial details as well. To keep a track of design general cost estimate is presented. The core of this design is to create a space which is attractive to its users, who will spend more time in public space and share it with its neighbours.
Aromatic and medical plant in family garden
Fialová, Hana ; Vaněk, Jan (advisor) ; Prokeš, Radek (referee)
This bachelor thesis is focused on the options of using medicinal aromatic spice plants (MAPs) found in family, hobby gardens in the Czech Republic. The aim of the thesis is to describe possible issues encountered during their cultivation using existing literary sources. First part of the thesis defines categories of researched plants, describes the history of MAPs and the reason why they were and still are being cultivated. Following chapter deals with choosing the right place for plant growth and with related characteristics such as soil quality, its treatment and light conditions. Next, a group of MAPs representatives are chosen in a way such that plants may be chosen among them for different garden environments, with different height, look and treatment requirements. Next chapter describes the options of using MAPs in a garden, be it mixed beds or newly created neighborhood in the form of a herb spiral or a gravel bed. It mentions the possibility of putting these elements into the concept of a thematic whole and achieving a three dimensional garden look through both ground plants and hanging containers. The part of thesis dedicated to reproduction is closely related to cultivation, because lots of plants need to be regulated as they grow. Furthermore, it describes sexual and asexual strategies of reproduction. The overview of care during different seasons highlights the most common tasks to be done in those periods. At the end of the thesis there are listed best practices of harvesting and processing herbs. Drying or freezing herbs has been getting more prominent, alongside the usual consumption in their fresh state. Herbs processed in that way may be used for brewing tea, as food spices, manufacturing cosmetic products and more. The variability of herbs is further proven by their use to create a homemade herb broth, which may in some cases fully substitute chemical fertilizers and other solutions.

The chapter about modern roof gardens contains examples from Czech republic and around the world in the form of extensive and intensive roof vegetation, interesting by their construction and their concepts. Practical part consists of two main chapters. First one evaluates the main underlying data and the layer structure of the already prepared flower-beds, for which there was then created koncept and planting plan. Separate project points out the proposal in the form of design parts, devided into individual subheads. First part shows a color variation of the thought, second is in the form of planting plan with the tables of used plants. There are presented techniques of the material transportation and deposition of individual components, which are used in the proposal. Final subheads contain informations about proposed maintnance of the roof garden and original budget. The space of the roof garden is intended for educational purposes for students, because it brings colorful sortiment of plants and also it is representative element of the Inter-faculty center of Enviromental Sciences II. Revitalization of the chateau park in Choltice
Čermáková, Michaela ; Vaněk, Jan (advisor) ; František, František (referee)
This work has the task to assess the current situation of the chateau park and at the same time the game preserve in Choltice, and suggest its revitalization in order to rejuvenate the vegetation and making the field available for the general public. Choltice is a market town in the Pardubice region, approximately 15 km west from Pardubice. At the end of 17. century a baroque castle was built here, which belonged to the count Simon Thun. His family belonged it until 1945. The chateau and the park is now owned by the borough Choltice. The chateau neighbours with the extensive English park, which passes the chateau game preserve, which is since 1992 a nature reserve and an important European locality. The diploma thesis contains a detailed theoretical basis and proposes solutions, which are directed both on the protection of the living conditions of protected and endangered species of a beetle Osmoderma eremita. This species occurs only rarely and his survival area is very limited, therefore it is necessary to create those conditions, and it is currently one of the main tasks of the revitalization. The next step is to help revitalize the introduction of spontaneous breeding fallow deer in the game preserve. This idea is not new, the fallow deer were bred there until 1945. The town of Choltice is very inclined towards this idea about farming and supports it. To increase the number of visitors this diploma thesis contains a proposal for the creation of a nature trail, this area would attract wider public than so far.
