The Czech Republic and the UK: a Eurosceptic comparison

Euroscepticism has recently started to enjoy a renaissance, boasting many different works in different formats whether it be a comparative study of two European countries or, investigating Euroscepticism in different national contexts to account for possible variations of Euroscepticism. This work aims to show the contrary. Using country case studies of the Czech Republic and the UK, this paper shows that regardless of temporal differences and differences in national contexts, Euroscepticism is intrinsically linked to some lines of argument concerning economy and democracy.

The hunger strike of Irish republican prisoners in 1981 from the point of view of British press

In 1981 a hunger strike broke out wich was held in the correctional facility Maze in Belfast. The hunger strike was held by Irish republican prisoners and ten men starved themselves to death. This strike was the culmination of a protest against the abolition of the Special Category Status for convicted paramilitary prisoners. This thesis focuses around the hunger strike of the Northern Irish prisoners and describes the background of the protest. The theoretical framework briefly describes the history of the Northern Irish conflict and the course of the hunger strike. Furthermore, this bachelor thesis describes the goals of the protesters and the main protagonists of the strike are introduced to the reader. The application part of this thesis is devoted to the qualitative analysis of this hunger strike. The main goal of this research is to find out to what extent British newspapers coverd this problematic situation in Northern Ireland and what was their attitude to the whole situation. The application section focuses on the coverage of British newspapers from a qualitative analysis perspective.

The evolution of Labour Party's position on Brexit

This bachelor thesis deals with the attitude of the British opposition Labour Party towards Brexit. The thesis explores the development of this attitude since the 2016 United Kingdom European Union membership referendum until the 2019 United Kingdom general election and focuses on the reasons for Labour Party's ambivalent stance towards this issue. The main subject of this thesis is the influence of the division of the Labour Party's electorate and the British one-round plurality electoral system on this attitude. The first part of the thesis deals with electoral systems and their influence on party systems and political parties. The second part examines the historical development of Labour Party's stance towards European integration. The goal of this part is to show that the Labour Party had always had an ambivalent and changing view on European integration and that its disunity on this issue is not a new phenomenon. The third part examines the development of Labour Party's position after the 2016 referendum and shows, how the view of the party changed, how the party tried to deal with this issue and what conflicts the party members experienced. The role of EUNIC in small states'cultural diplomacy: the case of Czech Republic

Small states have limited possibilities in promoting their own interests internationally due to their limited resources. They therefore use certain strategies to help them achieve their foreign policy objectives. This thesis deals with cooperative strategies in cultural diplomacy, as it often becomes a tool of small states for enhancing its visibility. But even in this environment, they face competition from stronger, larger states. Do small states use cooperative strategies in cultural diplomacy? And if so, how? The issue is examined in more detail on the case of the Czech Republic's participation in the association of EUNIC (European Union National Institutes of Culture), which represents a platform for cooperation of cultural diplomacy actors from the EU Member States. The Czech Republic is represented in the structures of EUNIC by the Czech Centers. The research of this thesis focuses specifically on the opportunities to strengthen the influence of small states in the international field, which EUNIC offers to the members. Transposition of environmental directives into the Czech legal order and its problematic aspects

This bachelor thesis deals with the transposition of environmental directives into the legal order of the Czech Republic. It describes in detail the process of transferring the law into national legislation and, at the same time, it examines the problems that arise here. The aim of this thesis is to clarify the most fundamental issues that occur when transposing environmental directives based on literature and practice. The causes of inappropriate transposition are selected from relevant literature and subsequently examined in case studies. These case studies concern six directives from two areas of environmental law. Chemical pollution area with worse overall transposition results and waste management with better results. Directives from the European Commission's database, which have gone furthest in infringement procedures, have been selected for the investigation. Using both national and European documents, both legislative and non-legislative, the process of transposing individual directives has been described. Based on the research, it has been found that the waste directives have been unduly transposed because of incorrect or incomplete transposition measures, non-communication, on the other hand, dominated the chemicals directives.
