Sigmundová, Alena ; Šmejkalová, Martina (advisor) ; Novotná, Jarmila (referee) ; Klimovič, Martin (referee)
Reading comprehension as a prerequisite for successful strategy of word problems solving in mathematics DISSERTATION Mgr. Alena Sigmundová ABSTRACT The dissertation describes the results of an interdisciplinary research study examining the linguistic aspects of word problems in mathematics and the connection between comprehension of the text of word problems and the success of their solution. In the introduction the research is set into the framework of theoretical bases: the term word problem in mathematics and the concept of reading comprehension, including factors influencing the understanding of the text are characterized and the results of previous research studies are described. Subsequently the work presents a methodology, course and results of testing of pupils in three pilot studies and in the main survey and the conclusions from the semi-structured interviews. The research is based on the linguistic analysis of 18 word problems with low solution success, taken from international research surveys PISA 2012 and TIMSS 2007, as well as on the level of comprehension of the text of these tasks in the 8th and 9th grade primary schools, modifying selected language phenomena and detecting the effect of these reformulations. 773 pupils from 13 elementary schools participated in the research. The study...
Linguistic analysis of Petr Nikl's works
Sigmundová, Alena ; Palkosková, Olga (advisor) ; Janovec, Ladislav (referee)
The content of this paper is a linguistic analysis of Petr Nikl's texts. Petr Nikl is an all-round artist. His main activity is graphic arts; he is also engaged in the Puppet Theater, he sings with a music group Lakomé Barky and writes children books. The aim of this study is to determine if the author respects the child perspective in his works. Especially if he uses only such language elements, that are appropriate for children. After a thorough analysis of all Nikl's books (Pohádka o Rybitince (2001), O Rybabě a Mořské duši (2002), Lingvistické pohádky (2006), Záhádky (2007), Jělěňovití (2008) a Niklův Blázníček (2009), I concluded that the author respects only some elements of the perspective of a child. The syntactic structure of the text is uncomplicated and therefore children appropriate. From the lexical point of view the situation is not so clear. The author uses simple metaphors, similes, uses words that mostly originate from the national origin, and often uses emotive words. On the other hand, uncommon and literary words and complicated poetic neologisms, that most children cannot know, occur in his texts quite frequently. From the morphological point of view I do not find any significant obstacles, so that children could not read and enjoy his works. But these obstacles can occur on the...

Causes of incomprehension in Czech language textbooks
Sigmundová, Alena ; Šmejkalová, Martina (advisor) ; Hájková, Eva (referee)
This thesis presents an analysis of Czech language textbook for 9th class published by Fraus. The intention of this thesis is to find some linguistic phenomena that hinder comprehension of the textbook. In the theoretical part describes the author general characteristics of the textbook and its functions, deals with studying from a text and defines the characteristics of the text and students. In the following section, a style of textbooks is characterized and specifics of the Czech language textbooks are described. The analysis of the textbook consists of several steps. First didactic equipment is analyzed and then the difficulty and semantic consistency of the textbook is considered. The second step is a complex language analysis of explanatory texts in which the author of the thesis focuses primarily on a text style, syntactic, lexical and graphic aspects. The explanatory texts that contain difficult language phenomena are completed with tests that determine whether students understand the text. The author of the thesis adds questionnaires that examine the functioning of this textbook in real teaching and learning and provide a subjective evaluation of pupils and their teacher.
