Female Body in the Sokol Movement
Špejtková, Petra ; Sarkissian, Alena (advisor) ; Topolová, Barbara (referee)
The theme of my bachelor's thesis is women's body in Sokol organization. I focus on the inclusion of women in the Sokol and the creation of women's unions. I also describe the discourse into which the female Sokol body enters, what meanings are generated through the dual concept of the body, and how the Sokol women's social body has transformed over the years. I apply this theoretical part in the second part of the thesis by analysing the specific performance of Sokol women and analysing the development of the Sokol women's social body between 1869 and 1938. Key words Sokol, women, physicality, social body, cultural performances
Maryša and Jocasta directed by Lukáš Brutovský
Tisotová, Nicole ; Sarkissian, Alena (advisor) ; Polochová, Markéta (referee)
The bachelor thesis deals with the conception of the title heroines in the productions of Maryša (Marysha) and Iokasté (Jocasta) directed by Lukáš Brutovský. It focuses on the dramaturgical analysis of selected scenes in comparison with the staging. The author of the thesis is interested in how women's themes are interpreted by the director and how he presents gender injustice and violence to the audience. She also looks at how the female experience is portrayed within the individual stories of the main characters. Drawing on feminist critique, the thesis reveals ways in which the director replicates gender injustice through stereotyping the female protagonists. It evaluates the extent of the director's feminist stance and whether the production may give rise to further discussion of gender issues. Key words analysis of performance, feminism, Czech drama
Theater censorship during the Nazi occupation
Menclová, Anika ; Topolová, Barbara (advisor) ; Sarkissian, Alena (referee)
This bachelor thesis explores the censorship of dramatic productions within the repertoire of the National Theatre in Prague during the Nazi occupation. The thesis focuses on the cultural- political attitudes of the Nazi regime, as well as their interventions in the theatre industry. In addition, it provides an explanation of the censorship mechanism, including the creation of lists of permitted and forbidden plays, and describes the themes of plays that were deemed undesirable. The National Theatre's dramatic repertoire is analysed according to the theatre season, with particular attention given to the authors featured and the changes implemented due to censorship regulations. The final chapter provides specific examples of National Theatre productions from 1939 that were problematic and subject to elaborate censorship interventions. Key words censorship, theatre, regulations, interference, dramatics, protectorate, National Theatre
Utopian Theatre Experiment of Duke George II of Meiningen
Blatný, Tomáš ; Sarkissian, Alena (advisor) ; Jiřík, Jan (referee)
The thesis deals with the theatrical experiment of Georg II, Duke of Saxe-Meiningen, who together with his spouse Ellen Franz and his manager Ludwig Chronegk built up a utopian community around Meiningen Court Theatre. The thesis does not address the theatrical reform from an aesthetic point of view, it conceptualizes the reform as a realization of a model of utopian community. Prusso-Austrian currents, which shaped the Duke's ideological worldview, are surfacing on the background of the political and cultural context of the Saxe-Meiningen Duchy. The Duke's own attempt at social engineering emerges from the intercestion of these opinion currents, declining enlightenment absolutism and thoughts of French socialist utopians. After foreshadowing these contexts as well as the history of emancipation of the revolutionary working class which the Duke rejected, the thesis reconstructs the Meningen utopia, according to established utopian features: regulation, space-time, isolation and self-sufficiency, authority and community. Sources of the thesis are not only secondary literature on the Meiningen theatre but also period sources and memoires of actors and actresses of the Meningen ensemble.
Performative Aspects of Passional of Abbess Kunigunde
Bartošková, Michaela ; Sarkissian, Alena (advisor) ; Weissar, Tomáš (referee)
The master's thesis deals with the performative aspects of the late medieval manuscript Passional of Abbess Kunigunde, which was used in the Monastery of St. George as a devotional object. The aim of the work is to show the interaction with the manuscript as a bodily act, through which, analogously to a theatrical performance, meanings are performed through the body, which led its users to assert themselves in their social roles and to the cohesion of the monastic community.
Identity through dystopia optics in productions: 1984, A Clockwork Orange and Solaris
Matejová, Regina ; Sarkissian, Alena (advisor) ; Pšenička, Martin (referee)
Title: Identity in the state of unconsciousness (reflections on the staging of dystopia) The three fictional worlds in the three productions, according to the canonical works of world literature, are a mirroring not only of repressive social intentions, but also of society as a whole and life of its individual articles. Through dystopia optics, we have the opportunity to look at a split picture of a reality - destabilized world without objective guarantees of facts, in which there is only presence. Without exaggerated optimism, the dystopia elements provide us with a wide field to reflect on various tendencies of oppression, but capable (in certain aspects) of going beyond fiction or a relatively shadowy confrontation with one's own human inhumanity. Deformation of individual and collective memory brings heroes into the world of counterfactual narratives or forced socially "acceptable" behavior. In a dystopian world, common sense, experience, knowledge or language fail. Ideological hegemony and various power tools discourage human identity through violence, psychological manipulation or dehumanization and unification in the form of forced collective rituals. All this encourages main characters to believe that the state is true and natural. In what ways is a deprived person portrayed in the...
