The role of music in everyday life: A study of users of the Spotify streaming platform
Sedláček, Martin ; Skovajsa, Marek (advisor) ; Sládek, Jan (referee)
This thesis presents music as an object through which the individual regulates their agency to perform activities in everyday life. Specifically, the thesis examines the relationship between listening to music through the streaming platform Spotify and the use of music in everyday situations. It seeks to better understand the ways in which users engage with the platform. The results of the bachelor's thesis are based on a review of relevant literature and analysis of interviews with Spotify users. The results show that the respondents perceive Spotify as a platform that allows them to integrate music more efficiently into their daily lives, even though they were not familiar with or did not use Spotify's features that directly offer users music appropriate to selected activities. Instead, when selecting music, respondents relied on their own practical knowledge of music, which they applied in a variety of ways to everyday situations through the other features that Spotify provides.
Factors related to academic stress among students of Czech universities
Lövenhöfer, Kryštof ; Malvotová, Pavla (advisor) ; Sládek, Jan (referee)
This study aimed to explore the topic of academic stress among students of Czech universities, to determine the level they experience, and most importantly, to verify whether the characteristics of students at Czech universities are related to their level of perceived academic stress. Specifically, the following factors were considered: gender, year of study, field of study, unhealthy eating, average time spent on social media, and financial situation pressure. To measure individual characteristics and the level of academic stress, data was collected through own questionnaire survey, which students entered by self-selection, and the final sample consisted of 610 respondents. The questionnaire utilized a self-translated version of the Perceived Academic Stress Scale (PAS), for which internal consistency was measured using Cronbach's alpha at 0.83. This represents a higher value than the original scale and can be considered a sufficiently reliable tool. The measured values of academic stress indicated 18 % of students with low academic stress, 63 % with moderate, and 19 % with high levels. At the same time, seven out of twelve hypotheses were confirmed. Specifically, higher values of academic stress were found among female students, students of veterinary fields, students who consumed some of the...
Analysing Photographs Sociologically: Photography as a Source of Insight into Social Structure and Social Change
Chládková, Barbora ; Skovajsa, Marek (advisor) ; Sládek, Jan (referee)
The bachelor thesis analyzes a set of photographs taken during the normalization period (1969-1989) in Czechoslovakia using visual fact analysis, semiotic analysis, and sociological structuralist analysis. Firstly, this thesis investigates classical theories of photography with the objective of comprehending the complexities of the photographic medium and identifying key factors to be considered during the analysis of photographs. Furthermore, it explores the use of photography within the field of sociology, with a focus on the techniques employed to interpret and analyze photographic materials. The analysis provides insights into the social structure and characteristics of the normalization period in Czechoslovak society, such as the militarization of society, the prevalence of communist propaganda, and the emphasis placed on labor as one of the pillars of the regime. The analysis also sheds light on everyday life during the period, including recreational practices, unhealthy habits, and family dynamics. Moreover, the thesis emphasizes the significance of using photographs as a complementary tool to other sociological methods in research. Keywords photography, sociology of photography, visual sociology, social structure, normalization (ČSSR)
Post-Political Dimensions of Urban Planning in Prague
Lamken, Josef ; Sládek, Jan (advisor) ; Linek, Lukáš (referee)
The aim of this thesis is to provide a theoretical synthesis of the current literature reflecting upon the post-political critique of urban planning in the theoretical section, which is then applied to the context of urban planning in Prague in the empirical section. The post-political line of thought takes a critical view of recent efforts to render urban planning more inclusive, asserting that by focusing on consensus-building, planning practices exclude the emergence of the political; the fundamentally conflictual nature of politics as described by Chantal Mouffe and Jacques Rancière. The critique suggests that participatory planning practices can be effective at upholding the hegemonic order by which the city is constituted, by pacifying the antagonistic forces that challenge it. In the empirical section, the applicability of this critique within the context of Prague's urban planning process is examined. This is achieved through a case study of the efforts of the Prague Institute of Planning and Development (IPR) to develop a new land use plan, while dealing with dissent from a prominent antagonistic actor - the NGO Arnika.
Is multi-year grammar school a clear choice? Two possible tertiary educated parents' reasons for keeping their children in mainstream middle schools
Absolonová, Josefína ; Podaná, Zuzana (advisor) ; Sládek, Jan (referee)
Czech multi-year grammar schools (a school type for children 11-18 years old, parallel to mainstream middle schools for children 11-14 years old and to high schools including four- year grammar schools for children 15-18 years old) belong to internationally researched phenomenon called selection, meaning sorting pupils based on school performance. Those who are placed in high tracks are usually children of parents with high cultural capital. For the parents, its mean of reproduction of that capital. It could be assumed that Czech tertiary educated parents would enrol their children in multi-year grammar schools, but a noticeable part of them is not doing so, even though they don't face any obvious obstacles. This thesis conducts a secondary analysis of Pisa-L 2003-2006 data, and it has concluded that to provide children with more time for their interest clubs or hobby clubs is not a reason to keep children in middle school. It has also concluded that parents of middle schools pupils tent to have more negative attitudes towards multi-year grammar schools. It is possible that these attitudes have influenced their decision to educate them in middle schools, but this type of analysis cannot prove causality.
Study stays abroad for students with special needs
Špinka, Aneta ; Richter, Eva (advisor) ; Sládek, Jan (referee)
(in English): Going to a foreign university is very difficult for a number of students with specific needs, according to the available data, only 0.15% of students with specific needs are among all Erasmus+ program participants, while at universities they make up a group of 10-20 % of all students (Evropská Komise, 2014). That is why I focused my research on the question of what are the biggest barriers for students with specific needs when arranging and implementing a scholarship programm. And whether they generally consider the stay experience to be beneficial for their subsequent life and career. I chose motivation as an additional variable, because it is necessary on the way to the decision to go. Since my goal was to obtain the most faithful description of events and experiences, I chose a qualitative study carried out in the form of semi-structured interviews. These were held with students with specific needs who had already participated in the stay. During the analysis, I looked at the results obtained through the lens of the concept of equal opportunities. I conclude that equality of opportunity is achieved because there are mechanisms by which students with specific needs can be adequately integrated into the study abroad programms, but due to a flaw in the system and communication within...
"Living on my terms": a reflection of topics affecting in decision for longterm living in alternative housing
Corradi, Veronika ; Richter, Eva (advisor) ; Sládek, Jan (referee)
(in English): This thesis focuses on how residents reflect their decision to permanently live in an alternative housing object. The theoretical part of the text includes three sections focusing on environmentally significant behaviour, consumer behaviour and models and on theories that have been used in the past for research of environmentally significant behaviour in housing and have been used as a theoretical background for this thesis. Data for this thesis was collected through semi-structured in-depth interviews with respondents who live in an alternative object on a long-term or permanent basis as part of their normal living arrangements. It was also assumed that living in an alternative object was the intention and preference of the respondents. Transcribed interviews were analysed using the principles of grounded theory. The analysis resulted in eight concepts entering into the consideration of permanently living in alternative housing objects. As the central concept, the statement "living on my terms" was chosen. The expression "living on my terms" was closely tied to the respondents' personal pro- environmental norms, which were the primary motivation for executing the intention. Furthermore, opportunity and ability to execute the intention are also important variables. Findings from this...
Content analysis of negative political communication on Twitter
Kliková, Markéta ; Linek, Lukáš (advisor) ; Sládek, Jan (referee)
This bachelor thesis aims to examine political communication with a closer focus on the concept of negativity. Content analysis is subjected to posts on the social media Twitter shared by the leaders of selected Czech political parties in the given period before the elections to the Chamber of Deputies in 2021. The individual tweets are classified into categories, which analyze in more detail whether these tweets are positive or negative. For negative tweets, their content and the target of this negativity is further analyzed. The frequency with which the tweets were shared by individual political leaders in a given period is also monitored. Based on this analysis, the work draws conclusions about how selected political actors in the period under review communicated with the public and, more specifically, how they used the concept of negativity in their political communication. The structure of this work is divided into theoretical, methodological and analytical part. The theoretical part defines the context of political communication and political marketing, along with new media and the specifics they bring to this communication. Furthermore, the concept of negativity in political communication, its use, division in terms of content and also its effects are defined. Positivity is also described as...
Perception and usage of public space during the Covid-19 pandemic
Němečková, Johana ; Malvotová, Pavla (advisor) ; Sládek, Jan (referee)
This bachelor thesis explores the experience of public space during the covid-19 pandemic. Specifically focusing on how respondents from Bohnice in Prague described their experience of perceiving and using public space during the pandemic. For such purpose, a qualitative research was conducted using semi-structured interviews and interpretive phenomenological analysis. Themes of safety, control, and injustice emerged in the respondents' accounts. These themes were also linked to a specific physical space. In particular, with the division into green spaces and areas where more people congregate (such as shopping centers). The statements are reflected, among other things, through the principles of ideal public space or in response to the thesis of the decline of public space.
