The journey motif in the Carpentier's The Lost Steps and Explosion in a Cathedral
Maroušek, Lukáš ; Poláková, Dora (advisor) ; Socháňová, Šarlota (referee)
Alejo Carpentier is a representative of the so-called marvellous real. However, his novels also deal with issues of the Hispanic American identity, dictatorships and, in general, historical events in Europe and America. In his literary work, we can contemplate very often the journey motif undertaken by the main characters, which is not only a movement from one place to another (the horizontal journey), but which is also a journey in the time and a path of initiation where the heroes discover themselves (the vertical path). The journey motif and its forms in the Carpentier's novels The Lost Steps (which we classify as a forest novel) and Explosion in the Cathedral (where we can find Carpentier's favourite motif of revolution, and what it implies) are the topic of this bachelor's thesis. The present work is focused on the journeys of the main heroes of the novels. The analysis will also be supplemented with an elementary theory of the marvellous real. The question of guilt and fatefulness in the Chronicle of a Death Foretold
Lukovská, Tereza ; Poláková, Dora (advisor) ; Filová, Miroslava (referee)
This bachelor thesis examines two major themes in Gabriel García Márquez's Chronicle of a Death Foretold. The work is based on an actual event in the author's life, and the layout of the chapters corresponds to this. Therefore, the theoretical part of the work begins with a biography of García Márquez, with particular emphasis on highlighting the circumstances that led him to write Chronicle of a Death Foretold. The thesis then goes on to describe the basic characteristics of the literary work under study. To facilitate orientation in the text, a list of characters most closely associated with the themes of guilt and fatality is included. A brief characterization of each of them also makes part of this work. The practical section explains how the 'scapegoat' was selected in the book and defines the difference between individual and collective guilt. This is followed by selected manifestations of the characters' collective guilt, juxtaposed with a chapter depicting characters who escaped the group's influence and tried to help the victim. The practical part concludes with a chapter on the fatality that is strongly present in the book through coincidences, and which prevented a good ending to the whole story.
The Theme of Time in Borges's Short Stories
Vadasová, Vendula ; Housková, Anna (advisor) ; Poláková, Dora (referee)
(in English): The work focuses on the short story collections Fictions and The Aleph by the Argentine author Jorge Luis Borges. It focuses on the topic of time from a philosophical point of view and subsequently develops it gradually through the analysis of individual short stories. In the individual chapters, time is projected in connection with the theme of dream, maze, life, death, eternity or fate. The aim of the work is to point out how the author perceives time in his short stories, in connection with other topics. Time is an integral part of human existence and cannot be escaped from, as it directly determines our existence.

The presence of the disappeared in the exile poetry of Juan Gelman
Kepková, Jana ; Housková, Anna (advisor) ; Poláková, Dora (referee)
This thesis explores the presence of desaparecidos in the exile poetry of Argentine poet Juan Gelman, specifically in his collection Open Letter (Carta abierta). The aim of the thesis is to show how the poet works with the image of his son, who disappeared during the Argentine dictatorship between 1976 and 1983. In doing so, the close connection between Juan Gelman's autobiographical experiences and his poetry is considered. Because the poet wrote Open Letter in exile, the thesis places this collection in a typological context with exile poetry in general. In the interpretation of individual poems, emphasis is placed on Gelman's experimental language techniques and recurring motifs related to his son's disappearance, as well as the love and pain of the father. Special attention is also paid to the theme of memory. This thesis shows that Gelman's poetry prevents the forgetting of the crimes committed during the military dictatorship and reminds us why the struggle for humanity and justice must continue.

Karimova, Elena ; Sánchez Fernández, Juan Antonio (advisor) ; Poláková, Dora (referee)
(English) This master's thesis examines the work of two great authors in the history of literature: Fyodor Dostoievsky and Pío Baroja. The thesis focuses on the interpretation and investigation of the philosophical ideas and the artistic technique of the writers. Pío Baroja describes the novel as a protean and open genre that combines philosophy, psychology, adventure, utopia, and epic. Through a comparative analysis, we will trace the parallels that exist in the work of the two writers and some aspects and characteristics that distinguish their ideas. Along with the themes, common elements and significant peculiarities of the works of both writers will be presented, such as main and secondary characters, heroes and anti-heroes, place where the story takes place and atmosphere, as well as plot and narrative elements. In addition, the present work will investigate the characteristic literary motives of both authors. THE LIFE AND WORK OF CAROLINA CORONADO
Hubáčková, Ema ; Housková, Anna (advisor) ; Poláková, Dora (referee)
Carolina Coronado is often being compared to Rosalía de Castro or even Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer and the truth is that even Bécquer found his inspiration in her. The fact that in the Czech Republic nobody has ever studied this author before, made me choose her as the subject of my thesis. Writing this work was complicated, since there is no literature available in the Czech Republic regarding this author, so I was constrained to find an appropriate literature in abroad. The goal of this thesis is to present the author and analyze her life and work while taking into account the work of her contemporaries. We are going to study her life and outer impulses that had later influence on her work, just as her first liberal thinking. We are also going to familiarize ourselves with a very original way of composing verses, the very first poetry and publication. We are going to analyze her life together with the political and social situation in Spain. The first biographical part of this thesis is not going to be only theoretical, since we are going to present her work depending on different stages of her life, which is going to be later subject to deeper analyze. The main part of this thesis is going to be dedicated to the introduction to Romanticism and to the three Spanish Romantic writers, contemporaries of...

Descendants of El Inca Garcilaso: Cholos and mestizos in Peruvian and Ecuadorian novels
Ganobčíková, Katarína ; Poláková, Dora (advisor) ; Sánchez Fernández, Juan Antonio (referee)
The goal of this thesis is to map the portrayal of mestizo characters (sometimes also called cholos) in the literature of Peru and Ecuador, who take the long road to descend from the mountains into the big cities. Besides the stigma connected to their origin, they also have to handle the problems connected with being city people, and their task to find their own place in contemporary society. The most important sources are novels in which the main characters themselves, either with pride or shame, identify as mestizos. These are no longer the idealized archetypes of characters that are only somewhat of a bridge between a native American and a Creole. Through the heroes of these novels' mental diversity, which offers a number of perspectives, it is possible to watch an authentic display of life in the decadent city community of Peru and Ecuador. With the help of the analysis of particular works and recurrent motifs in the novels of the 20th and 21st centuries that constitutes the main part of this thesis, we will demonstrate their effort in finding and defining their own identity.
