Galanterie in Pierre Corneille's early Plays
Vendlová, Johana ; Šuman, Záviš (advisor) ; Pohorský, Aleš (referee)
This bachelor thesis deals with gallantry in selected early plays of Pierre Corneille's comic genre. The aim of the thesis is to reveal gallant components in the given plays, to approach the circumstances of their involvement in dramaturgy and to describe their influence on comedy. The first part is devoted to the conceptualization of gallantry as a sociocultural and a literary category, considering its origin and influences from the Middle Ages to the seventeenth century. The description of these influences is necessary to understand the semantic permeability of this category, which gained many meanings during its development and reached their opposition, which significantly influences the gallant doctrine of classicist society, and thus the Corneille's audience. The second part analyzes concrete gallant components in selected comedies, whose corpus is divided into two parts: comedy of the thirties, Mélite and La Veuve, and comedy of the forties, Le Menteur and La Suite du Menteur. Each unit is achieved by a discussion summarizing the most important characteristics of the poet's style, the use of gallantry and the comedy of the decade, which allows them to be compared with each other. The focus is particularly on the development of the poet's style regarding the perspective of contemporary...
In search of tragical effect during Regency: the birth of philosophical tragedy
Concept of woman in André Breton's works written between 1928 and 1937
Veverková, Martina ; Voldřichová - Beránková, Eva (advisor) ; Pohorský, Aleš (referee)
This paper explores the concept of women in prosaic writings of André Breton, a key figure of French surrealism. The writings included are Nadja (1928), The Communicating Vessels (1932), Mad Love (1937) and Arcane 17 (1944). To Breton women were those who enable a poet to reach freedom and surreal and he wanted to love and celebrate them. However, many critics see the notion of women in his (and surrealist in general) work as isolated from a real woman, expressing only desires and ideas of a man and giving women only a passive role. In the analytical part of this paper the specific women in Breton's work are examined to evaluate the above mentioned criticism. The aim is to assess how accurate this criticism is. Also, coherence of the Breton's actual portrayal of women and his theoretical concepts is reviewed. Keywords French literature, surrealism, André Breton, woman
Representation of human passions in Histoires tragiques (1619) by François de Rosset
Kabarová, Anísa ; Voldřichová - Beránková, Eva (advisor) ; Pohorský, Aleš (referee)
In the middle of the 16th century, the French literature saw the appearance of a new forrn of narrative fiction - the tragic story ("histoire tragique"). Contrasting with the idealizing pastoral and chivalric novels, so popular at that time, the tragic story focuses on the dark side of human nature by featuring characters that commit the worst crimes being driven by passions. This thesis deals with the representation of passions in the most successful achievement ofthe genre - Histoires tragiques (1619) by Franyois de Rosset (1570-1619) who innovated the genre by borrowing plots for his stories from contemporary crime chronicle. The first part of the thesis provides a theoretical background introducing the concept of passion in the philosophical and literary discourse of the first half of the 1 i h century. The second part is devoted to the analysis ofthe topic of1ove and ambition (two main passions according to Rosset and the contemporary philosophical discourse) in several selected Rosseťs stories. In this part we are also focusing on how these stories are ref1ecting the transforrnation of the values of the 1 i h century nobility - its obsession with honour ("honneur") and glory ("gloire") - along with the increasing state control.
Jean-Philippe Toussaint and New novel
Veselá Segetová, Zuzana ; Voldřichová - Beránková, Eva (advisor) ; Pohorský, Aleš (referee)
This thesis deals with the question whether Jean-Philippe Toussaint's work resembles the work of the authors of the New novel, particularly Alain Robbe-Grillet. The thesis initiates with the topics covered by the New Novel: the main ideas and their realization and characteristics of the new writing style. This is followed by the analysis of a contemporary Belgian author, Jean-Philippe Toussaint. There is a short introduction of his life and character, his work and reasons why he is so popular and how he became a success. The main point of this part is the analysis of his writing style and its development from his early novels up to his present work. This thesis tries to look into the similarities and differences of J.-P. Toussaint's work and the work of the authors of the New novel. It mainly focuses on the use of objects, what role they play in Toussaint's novels, how they are described and the importance of their description for understanding the plot. The analysis begins with an introduction to the 1950s' new wave authors, later called the authors of the New novel, and their complaints aimed at the classical 19th century novel. We base this part mainly on Alain Robbe-Grillet's ideas. This author totally rejects classical plot, characters, accurate description of reality and linear time-flow. Instead, he...
Quarter century of Eugene Rastignac's life: analysis of the development of the character in The Human Comedy
Vidímová, Sára ; Voldřichová - Beránková, Eva (advisor) ; Pohorský, Aleš (referee)
The aim of my thesis is to observe and to analyse one of Balzac's characters who appears mainly in The Human Comedy. Eugene Rastignac's character changes in the course of novels. And the change is caused by his environment and also by the surrounding characters. Concerning the methodological part of my work, I use two Czech theorists who deal with the typology of characters (František Všetička, Bohumil Fořt). I will try to choose relevant fragments of Balzac's novels where I will describe change of the character. At the end I point out the future development of the subject and also the actual usage of Rastignac's fate as a pattern of ambitious young man.
Joseph-Arthur de Gobineau: Les Pléiades
Čermák, Břetislav ; Pohorský, Aleš (advisor) ; Jamek, Václav (referee)
This thesis is devoted to the most important prosaic work of J.-A. Gobineau, the novel Sons of Kings. Its aim is to give a detailed description of the eponymous characters which the author considers to be the elite of mankind. The thesis is divided into three parts: each chapter regards the exceptional nature of the sons of kings from different points of view. By paying attention to individual levels in the piece we are trying to define the common basis of the exceptionality of the sons of kings. The first chapter treats the racial theories of Gobineau. The novel is put into context with one other piece by the same writer, An Essay on the Inequality of the Human Races. We illustrate that on the racial level the exceptionality of the sons of kings is due to certain inborn capabilities that are shared by all descendants of Germanic kings; at the same time we clarify the relationship between the notions of nobility and race. The second chapter discusses the relationship between the individual and society. Special attention is paid to the influence of environment on the intellectual and emotional evolution of mankind. We also focus on the question of confronting the alternative as a means of self-discovery. The specific quality of the sons of kings lies in their freedom of judgment, which allows them to stand...
Le bateau ivre in Czech translation
Merhautová, Marie ; Pohorský, Aleš (advisor) ; Šarše, Vojtěch (referee)
This thesis is focused on the Drunken Boat poem by J. A. Rimbaud and its Czech translation. In particular, it focuses on the content of the poem and the meaning of specific images. It seeks an answer to a question to what extent does the preservation of poem's formal elements adversely affect its content and the vividness of its images. For this purpose, an original Czech translation of the poem is introduced, which is in turn analysed together with the other pre- existing translations. The study finds a parallel between Rimbaud's own path to freedom, leading from formal aspects to content, and his work, reflecting the same principles. For this reason, the formal aspects of the original poem and its Czech translations (e.g. Čapek, Hrubín, Neznal, Kadlec) do not represent the primary topic of this work. Instead, the study focuses on preserving the content of the poem and its new interpretations. Finally, the thesis also provides a review of the Czech translations of the poem.
The unknown Simenon: Simenon as a journalist and the author of popular and psychological novels
V úvodní části své práce shrnuji Simenonův život a dílo. Druhou a třetí kapitolu tvoří prezentace počátků jeho tvorby - období žurnalistiky a psaní lidových románů, tedy téměř neznámých oblastí autorova díla. Ačkoliv vliv těchto oblastí je na budoucí vývoj nepopiratelný, z...
