The instrumentalisation and weaponisation of migrants, its impacts, and how the EU responds: the case of Belarus
Škopková, Lucie ; Parízek, Michal (advisor) ; Kazharski, Aliaksei (referee)
This diploma thesis will focus on the weaponisation of migration as a hybrid threat posed to states in an attempt to destabilise their internal systems. The case study of the Poland-Belarus border crisis will be used to examine and illustrate how the European Union can address such hybrid attacks and how this reflects on the notion of the European Union as a 'normative power'. This will be done by conducting a content analysis of relevant news articles from EURACTIV, EUobserver, and POLITICO on the case study and by holding interviews with experts and academics. The notion of the European Union as a normative power will be explored through the lens of realism and neo-realism, focusing on the role of human rights and the European Union's reliance on sanctions. This will help to explore the conclusion that the conceptualisation of the European Union should be more nuanced, making it appear as a civilian power with strong normative foundations in practice rather than a solely normative power.
Nowcasting as the new potential predicting method for the policy-makers
Chaloupka, David ; Kofroň, Jan (advisor) ; Parízek, Michal (referee)
This bachelor's thesis examines the role of nowcasting as a real-time data pre- diction approach in policy-making. The study compares the informative value of macroeconomic forecasting during crises and the potential of nowcasting as an alternative. By analyzing selected forecasting and nowcasting indexes from 2019 to 2022, the research fnds that nowcasting performs well during during 2020, which was afected by COVID-19 pandemic. However, it faces limitations in terms of prediction horizon and data requirements. Although forecasting may lose its informative value during crises, nowcasting cannot entirely replace it. Instead, both approaches can complement each other, enhancing policy decisions. The thesis also highlights nowcasting's potential for policy analysis and also its use in science.
Religion in the United Nations Security Council
Formánková, Marie ; Parízek, Michal (advisor) ; Dostál, Jan (referee)
This thesis deals with the occurrence of terms with religious significance in the meeting records of the United Nations Security Council. Religion manifests itself in the private and public spheres, in which it also intervenes in political and international affairs. As it is also present in various forms in the United Nations, the thesis aims to find out whether religion is also manifest in the Security Council and, if so, in what forms and contexts. It also tries to find an answer to the question if there was a temporary increase in the number of mentions of religion after 2001. In addition to the literature, the thesis is based on the analysis of Security Council meetings, that took place in the period 1996- 2006. A dataset was created consisting of ¼ of the meetings for the given period, which means 550 records out of a total of 1 998. Through the analysis of these documents, the thesis focuses not only on the number of religious expressions and their form, but also on the possible causes that may affect their presence. Primarily, it is the thematic focus of the UNSC meeting, which is treated as the main factor in the occurrence of references to religion. Therefore, the thesis tries to find out whether they really represent a fundamental role and in which topics religious aspects occur most...
The Argentine-Brazilian bilateral nuclear verification protocol in the light of trust-building cooperation theory
Argüello, Facundo ; Parízek, Michal (advisor) ; Doboš, Bohumil (referee)
The Argentine-Brazilian bilateral nuclear verification protocol in the light of trust-building cooperation theory Argüello, 2023 Abstract This work aims to identify the reasons for ABACC's continued success in securing a strong reception by Argentina, Brazil, and the NSG, and well as predict the impact of Brazil signing the IAEAAdditional Protocol in its search for a nuclear submarine as part of the PROSUB. The thesis analyzes ABACC from a neo-institutionalist theoretical framework of Regime Theory, cooperation patterns, Rational Design, and studies on International Organization centralization, independence, and enforcement problems. The work concludes that ABACC is successful because, firstly, its credibility and reputation are convenient for both state members, which share similar gains of prestige from the institution's success. This is because the agency has encompassed the interests of both. Secondly, ABACC is the work of a careful institutional design that rests on centralization, independence, high-quality of information, and strictly enforced bilateral symmetry between Argentina and Brazil. Regarding the impact of Brazil's nuclear submarine project, it can be said that it threatens ABACC's success because it changes the interests of Brazil, which are no longer encompassed by the Agency. This means...
Changes in Japan-South Korea Relations in the Context of the Current Trade War
Protasevičová, Alexandra ; Kučerová, Irah (advisor) ; Parízek, Michal (referee)
This thesis examines the trade war between South Korea and Japan, which began in the summer of 2019. The dispute has a complex history that partly explains the inevitability of the conflict: Japan is still coming to terms with its colonial past, while South Korea is struggling to forgive the war crimes it committed and is waiting for an official apology. Despite the long- standing disagreements between the two countries, South Korea and Japan remain key allies of the US, which is watching the whole trade war with great concern, especially because of the potential danger from North Korea, which confirms the global impact of this trade war. It is thus in the best interests of the United States to resolve the conflict quickly. Crucially, both Japan and South Korea are using the dispute to adopt hostile historicism as a key resource in the political game: using it to legitimize their own objectives. The aim of this thesis will therefore be to answer the question of what preceded the trade war between South Korea and Japan and what are the reasons for the deterioration of bilateral relations. Another question is how the conflict can be resolved and whether the United States can directly influence it. This paper is based on the hypothesis that the trade war between Japan and South Korea is directly...
States' Compliance with Human Rights Provisions and Recommendations Stemming from UN Human Rights Mechanisms
Nevřivý, Zdeněk ; Karlas, Jan (advisor) ; Parízek, Michal (referee)
The master's thesis examines states' compliance with the UPR and UN treaty bodies by exploring pre-selected factors influencing states' compliance with human rights provisions and recommendations stemming from UN human rights mechanisms over ten years (2011-2021). The first two parts describe UN human rights mechanisms and include a literature review that provides an overview of sources focusing on the UN treaty body system and the UPR. Findings from the literature review are used to define the two opposing theories: rationalist theory and theory emphasizing states' administrative capacities and two complementing theories. Based on these theories, four hypotheses are formulated and operationalized to perform four case studies focused on the Netherlands, South Africa, Bahrain, and Honduras. Recommendations given to states are assessed from the perspective of human rights provision or recommendation per se by two sets of criteria for the UPR and UN treaty bodies. To indicate the level of compliance, assessments are assigned with five values. Afterward, findings are interpreted to answer the research question, verify, or refute hypotheses, and compare states' compliance with human rights provisions and recommendations stemming from UN human rights mechanisms.
European media representation of Ukrainian and Russian state enterprises
Terebylo, Vitalii ; Parízek, Michal (advisor) ; Kazharski, Aliaksei (referee)
The thesis is devoted to the analysis of media representation of Russian and Ukrainian state-owned enterprises in the European media. Non-specialized media sources from Germany, the Czech Republic, and Poland are selected as case studies and 4 data samples of 340 articles altogether are taken. With the application of the content analysis technique, the thesis answers several research questions. First, the question of which representation image (geoeconomic or business) prevails in media is addressed. Second, the difference in representation between the Ukrainian and Russian state-owned enterprises is demonstrated. Third, the thesis shows how the representation of state enterprises changes within the 2007-2022 timeframe. Keywords Russia, state-owned enterprises, Gazprom, European media, media representation, Germany, Poland, Czech Republic, content analysis, Ukraine, geoeconomics, state capitalism. Title European media representation of Ukrainian and Russian state enterprises.
Models of data flow governance and their followers: Why do countries adopt one framework over another?
Dubravčíková, Klára ; Parízek, Michal (advisor) ; Mazač, Jan (referee)
DUBRAVČÍKOVÁ, Klára. Models of cross-border data flow governance and their followers: Why do countries adopt one framework over another? Praha, 2022. 119 pages. Master's thesis (Mgr.). Charles University, Faculty of Social Sciences, Institute of Political Science. Department of International Relations. Supervisors Dr. rer. pol. Michal Parízek, M.Sc., Ph.D. & Junprof. Dr. Jan Vogler. Abstract Currently, there are three different regulatory models of cross-border data flow, produced by three dominant actors in the international system - the United States of America, the European Union, and the People's Republic of China. As all three actively convey their model to other countries, posing new challenges to the global economy associated with the models' incompatibility, other countries face a policy-choice dilemma on what model to adopt. Consequently, the issue of mapping how the three approaches to data governance spread across the globe and exploring the rationales of states that adopt one of the three models arises. The thesis turns to this question and uses logistic regression analysis to find a correlation between the adoption of a specific cross-border data flow governance model and three sets of predictors that characterise the economic, social, and power relations between proponent-adopter pairs....
