On Some significant aspects of growing L1 communicative competence
Klikarová, Helena ; Červinková Poesová, Kristýna (referee) ; Pípalová, Renata (advisor)
The main purpose of the thesis was to investigate the role of the age factor in discourse and to observe some significant aspects of the growing LI communicative competence in children. The analysis was based on a corpus consisting of audio recordings of adult-child interactions in the primary school environment. The interactions involved pupils of different ages and their teachers. The children formed three age groups according to their grade. They were pupils of the first, third and fifth grade; that is to say they were mostly seven, nine and eleven years old. The recording took place in Barnes Elementary School in Beaverton, Oregon, USA, during two weeks in May, 2006. Although the school staff was very helpful and open to the project, there were factors that made it rather complicated (see also 1.3). Firstly, the time period of two weeks was a short time to obtain enough material for a large-scale research project. Moreover, the school schedule included many activities such as field trips or theatre performances, which even further reduced the time aimed for recording. Secondly, the school was a noisy place, which caused certain passages of the recordings to be unintelligible. Thirdly, young children from the first grade were sometimes shy and reluctant to talk, so their speech was inaudible and thus...
Multi-Aspectual Analysis of Personal E-mails
Šilhavá, Romana ; Pípalová, Renata (advisor) ; Hrobařová, Barbora (referee)
This study is aimed at the genre of personal, informal, exclusively British e-mails. I analyze this extremely progressive field multi-aspectually. The aspects I concentrate on are graphic, morphological, lexical and pragmatic. Additionally, a separate chapter is dedicated to ellipses. Furthermore, I include analysis based on Biber's conception of dimensions. Most of the linguistic features are statistically evaluated and subsequently interpreted. My results demonstrate the tendency of written e-mails to share many characteristics with the spoken English language. My data seem to suggest that this genre is hugely affected by the contemporary trend of economizing the language. Simultaneously, this research reveals that what permeates the written media of personal emails considerably is orality. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)

Compounding in Four Registers of Contemporary English
Šolcová, Zuzana ; Pípalová, Renata (advisor) ; Matuchová, Klára (referee)
This study investigates the distribution of compounds in four registers of contemporary British English: newspaper reporting, fiction, radio broadcasting, and face-to-face conversation. The studied corpus totals 64000 words and comprises thematically comparable samples of the registers in question. The analysis focuses on the incidence and distribution of compound types and subtypes in the four sub-corpora. The classification is primarily form-based and concerns such criteria as word class, spelling form and the syntactic relation between the compounds'elements. The results of the classification are substantiated with quantification and interpretation of the data. The research reveals great differences in both density and diversity of cases in individual registers. Specifically, we notice contrastive tendencies in the two written and two spoken registers.
Three ways of expressing future time in modern British fiction and non-fiction (will/shall + infinitive, to be going to + infinitive, present prograsive)
Mikuláš, Martin ; Jančovičová, Ivana (advisor) ; Pípalová, Renata (referee)
This diploma thesis analyses three selected ways of expressing futurity in modern English: will/shall + infinitive; the to be going to construction; and the present progressive tense. The expression of futurity is explored in fiction and non-fiction separately. However, this thesis concentrates only on written English. In Part One, several approaches to the phenomenon of futurity are introduced. In Part Two, the selected expressions of futurity are presented and analysed as to their meaning, distribution, syntactic and Contextual factors. Attention is paid to the proportion of occurrence of these expressions, their meanings, and how these are affected by context (situation, subject, negation, voice) and style. Analysis is made separately for fiction and non-fiction corpus; their comparison is included in the last chapter. The frequency of the occurrence of future expressions and their meanings in the two registers are summarised in tables at the end of the work and in graphs included in the text. Lexical and Stylistic Features of the Language of Sport
Liška, Martin ; Matuchová, Klára (referee) ; Pípalová, Renata (advisor)
This thesis examines the language of sport from the point of view of lexis, syntax, and, to a lesser extent, stylistics. In the theoretical part, a brief overview of its most typical features is provided, based on the relevant sources. The empirical section offers statistics and data obtained from the analysis of six selected texts that report on sporting events, specifically on ice hockey and football matches. The main focus is on four areas - sports terminology, informal expressions, stative and dynamic verbs, and finite and non-finite verb forms. In each of them, special attention is devoted to the similarities and differences detected in individual texts, especially as regards the comparison of approaches adopted by the tabloid press on the one hand, and the serious media on the other.

Comparison of Czech and English Speaker's Use of English Intersentential Connectives in Geographic Articles
Jirsová, Miroslava ; Pípalová, Renata (advisor) ; Matuchová, Klára (referee)
The present thesis is a corpus study comparing English and Czech (non-native) speakers' use of intersentential connectives in English geographic articles. The corpus contains English articles written by British English and Czech speakers, and translations from Czech into English. The thesis examines the frequency, formal diversity, semantic categories, position, punctuation, syntactic functions and formality of the connectives in the corpus. The results confirm the original hypothesis that texts written by Czech speakers are less rich in intersentential connectives, which applies both to their frequency and formal diversity. In the other categories, no significant differences were found. The interpretation of the differences is based on negative transfer, later stage in the order of acquiring language components within second language learning and acquisition, and the specificity of Czech scientific writing.
