In this thesis, we will introduce the James-Stein estimator, we will study its properties and compare them with other estimation methods. We will explain, what is admissibility of an estimator and figure out if our estimators are admissable. We will introduce the Bayes estimators and the empirical Bayes estimators. Furthermore, we will analyse how their properties can be examined differently. Finally, we will perform a simulation study and we will compare the quality of estimations on its results and see if they follow the explained theory. Using this, we will try to decide when is using the James-Stein estimator appropriate. 1

Donated existence: Theological analysis of "élan vital" in Henri Bergson's work
Filip, František ; Novotný, Vojtěch (advisor) ; Svoboda, David (referee)
The diploma thesis "Donated existence: Theological analysis of ‚élan vital' in Henri Bergson's work" presents an analysis of the notion of "vital impetus" of the French philosopher Henri Bergson in order to examine the potential contibution of this concept for contemporary theology and for human society itself. The composition of the thesis consists of five basic parts that correspond to the principal chapters. The first chapter is dedicated to the life of Henri Bergson. The theme of the second chapter is a general introduction to the method of Bergson and the main ideas of Bergson's work. The third chapter focuses directly on the concept of "vital impetus" as it appears and is gradually developed in Bergson's work. The subject of the fourth chapter is a summary of the reception of the idea of "vital impetus". Based on the theological reception, the final chapter examines the potential contribution of this concept to today's theological discussion and the life of human society. The work concludes that although the concept of "vital impetus" is based on the scientific findings that have been already overcome, it can remain constantly inspiring if we reflect what the author wanted to express through him about the reality of our world.

The topic of hope in the works of Joseph Ratzinger
Mikluš, David ; Novotný, Vojtěch (advisor) ; Vopřada, David (referee)
From the relatively extensive works of Joseph Ratzinger we will first look up more significant texts dealing with hope. Then the collected materials will be studied and we will attempt to analyze, evaluate and compare them. The aim of our thesis will be to capture Ratzinger's basic line of thought concerning hope. We will also try to contrast Ratzinger's basic conception of hope with other approaches to this topic which he has encountered during his life since from our point of view, these approaches were often either incorrect or too narrow- minded. Thus we will be dealing especially with Ratzinger's texts originating from the time of his academic career. Furthermore, we will analyze also the texts written in the period when Professor Ratzinger was invited, as the Prefect of the Congregation of the Doctrine of Faith, to lecture on hope. However, in the section dealing with methodology we will attempt to distinguish texts coming from Ratzinger's pre- and post-Congregation career. Since the topic of hope is closely related to soteriology and eschatology, we will include these disciplines into our thesis, though only marginally. In practice, eschatology is also connected to political science. In the concluding section of our thesis we would like to summarize the essentials of Ratzinger's conception...
De aeternitate mundi by St. Tomas Aquinas
Pluhař, Jiří ; Novotný, Vojtěch (advisor) ; Mohelník, Tomáš (referee)
This diploma thesis "De aeternitate mundi St. Thomas Akvinski" deals with one of the themes that are nowadays more or less omitted - the eternal world. It was one of the greatest intelectual arguments in the half of the 13th century. The result of those arguments was the clarification of the relations between theology and philosophy. The intense of these disputations led to the restriction of philosophical studies at university in Paris. Two groups of learners arose there. Not only were there philosophical disputes between these groups of scholars, but also political ones. We observe the life or a saint in this discomposed era. The saint, that looks for the truth honestly and for this fact he is criticized by both groups. It might be the reason why the publication De aeternitate mundi the brilliant and balanced work about our problem. A small diamond that glitters in the darkness of history.
