RESULTS OF PALLIATIVE TREATMENT FOR HEAD AND NECK TUMOURS
NĚMCOVÁ, Michaela
This Bachelor´s thesis presents the results of palliative treatment in patients with advanced head and neck cancer. The ultimate treatment goal is to improve the patient quality of life. The thesis is divided into theoretical and practical parts. The theoretical part deals with the basic specifications of tumours of head and neck areas. The aim is to evaluate the results of palliative radiation in patients with head and neck cancer. The following hypothesis was determined as part of the study: "The results of treatment of patients with head and neck cancer at ONO České Budějovice are comparable with those reported in bibliography." The practical part includes data collected from the medical records available at the Oncology Ward of the hospital in České Budějovice (Nemocnice České Budějovice, a.s.). After evaluating 50 patients with head and neck cancer, the results were compiled in tables and graphs. The reference feature included the diagnosis, patient age and sex, stage of disease, start and end of treatment and survival time. The key monitored variable was survival time measured in days. The median survival rate is 179.54 days (5.98 months) with a 95% confidence interval, which means there is a 95% probability the patient dies between the fifth and seventh months after starting treatment. The results featured in the professional bibliography falls into the author´s 95% confidence interval, meaning that they correspond to the literature. The hypothesis on the comparability of survival time was thus confirmed. Survival times were evaluated using the unequal variances t-test, Kruskal-Wallis test and the Pearson correlation coefficient in the MS Excel and IBM SPSS programs. The elaborated results may serve as a statistical survey or study material for radiology assistants.
