"Self-portrait in the circles of smoke": self-fashioning of the modern artist as a smoker in the Czech art at the turn of the 19th and 20th century
Kolářová, Petra ; Konečný, Lubomír (advisor) ; Lahoda, Vojtěch (referee)
The topic of this Diploma Thesis is the representation of an artist as a smoker in the Czech Art at the turn of the 19th and 20th century. The motive is studied in the works of artists of the 1890s generation and the early avant-garde (Osma, Skupina výtvarných umělců), with the focus on the iconography of a smoker in art as well as the cultural history of smoking. Apart from paintings and graphics it uses other visual sources such as portrait photographs, caricatures published in contemporary newspapers and posters. The Thesis looks for a wider tradition in the European art and maps specific types of artist-smoker for whom cigarette, pipe or cigar is a part of his personal stylization. The first part concentrates on the early usage of the motive in the baroque painting and in the 19th century as such. The next part focuses on self-fashioning of modern artists characterized by their definition against social conventions. The attribute of smoking plays a role of a symbol of bohemian Iife, dandy astuteness, neurasthenic decadent, social or artistic revolt or emancipation of female-artists. The last part deals with the relationship of smoking to the actual art production of modern artists. Smoking is a metaphor for creativity of the symbolist poet or painter who draws the inspiration from his subjective...
Zdeněk Palcr
Mladičová, Iva ; Wittlich, Petr (advisor) ; Lahoda, Vojtěch (referee)
V příštím roce uplyne deset let od smrti sochaře Zdeňka Palera, což jistě neznamená dostatečný časový odstup, který by umožnil podat ucelený pohled na proces sochařova vývoje. I přesto se tato diplomová práce pokusí předvést hlavní témata Palerovy tvorby, shrnout veškeré doposud zveřejněné reakce na sochařův výtvarný projev a zařadit jej do širších dobových souvislostí. Ač Palerovo sochařské dílo zaujímá v českém výtvarném umění druhé poloviny dvacátého století místo zásadní, není širší veřejnosti známo. Přesvědčivost vážného tvůrčího výsledku tkví především v autorově soustředěném a systematickém směřování k samé podstatě sochařství, jež doplňoval zevrubnými úvahami o základních sochařských otázkách.
Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)

The sculptural work of Jiří Seifert
Hlaváčková, Jitka ; Wittlich, Petr (referee) ; Lahoda, Vojtěch (advisor)
The present thesis focuses on sculptural work of Jiti Seifert and its evolution within the context of Czech and European art of the 2nd half of 20th century. It contains a detailed study on sources of inspiration and circumstances of Seifert's work as well as sculptor's artistic curriculum. The latter is divided into three main periods following the evolution of his artistic activity. Due to sculptor's personal engagement, these periods match closely with the recent political history of Czechoslovakia. The 1st period, that comprehends the author's seek for own artistic expression, dates since the beginning of his studies at the Academy of Applied Arts in Prague and culminates in the abstract artworks inspired by Jean Arp and Henry Moor. Its final point is marked by the execution of the Belfry for Jan Palach (1969) sculpted during the symposium in St. Margarethen, Austria. It is also during this event when Seifert meets Karl Prantl, an Austrian sculptor who influences him in his work forever since. The 2nd period that is marked by the limited possibility of realization extends between the years 1970 and 1989. On one hand Seifert turns back to the private world and looks for inspiration emerging out of personal life and feelings while, on the other hand, he also gets new impulses from pre-historic art and...
