The picture of woman in portrait photography in magazine letem světem in 1927 and 1937

Bachelor thesis The Picture of Woman in Portrait Photography in Magazine Letem světem in 1927 and 1937 examines different images of women in the picture magazine Letem světem. Using visual analysis methods, the thesis compares pictures of a woman as a mother, a housewife, a sex symbol, a worker or a sportswoman in 1927 and 1937. In the theoretical part, it explains the origins and success of picture magazines including the magazine Letem světem in political and media context of the time. In the second part, it describes various methods of portrait photography in the First Czechoslovak Republic, attitudes to the photographic process and, of course, contemporary female visual stereotypes used in the magazine contents and advertisements. The aim of this work is also to show differences between the image of a woman in the magazine and her real social and legal status and living conditions of the time, described in the first part of the thesis.
Visual political satire in the Czech media

Thesis called Visual political satire in the Czech media shows different types of visual satire which appeared in Czech media during its history and places them in historical context. It examines the political satire in detail from the fifties of the twentieth century, when the communist regime in Czechoslovakia was established. But the largest space is dedicated to the digital age. It describes technological changes which influenced birth of a new kind of satire, photomontage. Thesis focuses on declared photomontage. At first, it shows montages that appear in traditional media and then it proceeds to the internet. Presently, the content of web pages with media theme is created by amateurs as well. Thesis focuses on the production of one such amateur who takes part in the online citizen journalism, Teo Adamy. He comments politics through his montages. By the analysis of his photomontages, we find out in which topics the author is interested and how he processes them. Thesis closely analyzes the category Celebrity/Poblitici and looks for motives that repeat in his images. The final output is comprehensive preview to author's creation.
FASHION PHOTOGRAPHY AND ITS CURRENT POSIOTION IN MEDIA AND ADVERTISING

The bachelor thesis Fashion photography and its current position in media and advertising examines the role of fashion stories (fashion editorials) in relation with the lifestyle magazines they are published in, regarding the role photographers who are responsible for the fashion stories and the fact whether the advertisement in particular magazine issue is related to the content of the fashion story. The analytical part of the thesis is based on the specific example of three lifestyle magazines in the Czech Republic - Elle, Dolce Vita and proc ne?! and on the work of four photographers that publish the most in these magazines - Anna Mrazek Kovacic, Standa Merhout and pairs Stepanka Stein & Salim Issa, Rene & Radka. It is subdivided into three units. The first examines the role of fashion stories in media, define the parameters on the basis of which a quality of a fashion story can be specified. The second analyzes the relation between fashion stories and advertisement on the example of brands that advertise in the magazines in comparison to the brands that are used in the fashion stories. The third analyzes the photographic style of the authors of fashion stories and examines how it is affected by the requirements of the client's order.
Problems of post production in photojournalism on the example of the World Press Photo competition

The aim of this bachelor thesis is to describe problem of digital postproduction on the example of the pictures from World Press Photo contest. Theoretical part of this thesis deals with the redefinition of standard of photojournalism and with the perception of digital postproduction by media consumers. Practical part contains case studies of photographs that have been disqualified or have become the subject of controversy and an interview with Mark E. Johnson from NPPA. This part also includes two questionnaires, which examine the perception of digital postproduction by media consumers and winners of World Press Photo contest.
Personality of Vilem Heckel in the Czechoslovak media

Bachelor's thesis "Personality of Vilem Heckel in the Czechoslovak media" introduces one of the most significant Czech photographers of the 20th century. Vilem Heckel dedicated his work to a mountain photography, landscape photography and also to an advertising photography. Theoretical part of this thesis tries to outline the photographical development of Vilem Heckel and pays attention to the main branches of his work. In addition to this part a Czechoslovak media and photographic context of years 1950-1970 is mentioned. Analytic part represents a research of Vilem Heckel's publication activity in selected magazines. It offers a quantitative comparsion of published pictures in the magazines, examines Heckel's publication activity and describes his historical media image. Using concrete pictures it also tries to demonstrate his visual style. Finally, the thesis sums up a contribution of Vilem Heckel in the different time periods. In a supplement section there are examples of Heckel's front covers and there is also an interview with his daughter Helena.
The influence of usual coverage on the content of supplement magazines of the Newspapers MF DNES, Lidové noviny and Hospodářské noviny

The master thesis "The Influence of Picture Coverage on the Content of Supplement Magazines of the Newspapers MF DNES, Lidové noviny and Hospodářské noviny" is focused on the influence of picture coverage on the production of supplements of three national daily newspapers. The research conducted within the thesis evaluates how the editors work with picture material, and combines a quantitative research of the picture coverage of the newspapers with the qualitative research of interviews with heads of the editors of the magazines. The research examines what kind of picture coverage appears in the supplements, how the editors inform about sources of the picture coverage and what is the influence of the picture coverage on production of texts and articles. Both parts of the research are compared, and as a result, the comparison shows the differences between measured data of the quantitative analysis and opinions of managers on picture coverage in their magazines. The following magazines are included in the research: Víkend Hospodářských novin, Pátek Lidových novin a Magazín DNES, which belongs to MF DNES. This thesis deals with photographs in the printed media among the elections to the lower chamber of the Czech Parliament during 2Q 2006 and 2Q 2010. The main focus is picture of the politicians and the political parties. In the theoretical part of the thesis we sum up the main aspects of the media ahead of the elections and the publishing of photographs. We observe news factors, agenda setting, framing, spiral of silence, technical aspects of photography or manipulation possibilities. The practical part brings the analysis of the photographs in the home news pages of the in the four most-read broadsheet daily newspapers and another daily newspaper that is published by a political party. The analysis sample comprises all issues of the dailies in the period of five weeks ahead of the elections in the years 2006 and 2010. The data were analyzed by means of the quantitative content analysis. For this analysis we used up to 20 parameters. The quantified data were then analyzed by the SPSS and PASW statistical software. Multilevel analysis was also applied. Bachelor's thesis: Is the only purpose of Czech lifestyle magazines to present advertisements? An evaluation of the content of two Czech lifestyle magazines - JOY and Harper's Bazaar. This thesis is based on a hypothesis that Czech lifestyle magazines are oversaturated with advertisements and that their creators devote more space to the advertisers than to actual own lifestyle/journalistic content. This thesis compares the amount of space devoted to advertisements and original lifestyle content in particular, within a three- month period in the year of 2012. It also deals with a possible coherence of advertisers and lifestyle content and thematic agenda of analysed magazines, to a lesser extent. There will be comparisons of both JOY and Harper's Bazaar provided for each aspect evaluated by quantitative analysis, specifically through emergent coding. In the first part of the thesis, the author discusses the presentation of analysed magazines, their appearance, history, and their place among the Czech media market. The topic of media commercialization is also discussed. The coding book is attached to this thesis as well as a CD with the full coding book and definitions of variables.

The bachelor thesis Ethical aspects of citizen photojournalism with a focus on photographic and audiovisual record from late twenties until present follows up the phenomenon of citizen journalism, which recorded especially in the last decade a sharp rise thanks to the development of information and communication technologies and looks at it from an ethical perspective. The thesis is divided into three parts. The first part deals with theoretical notions of ethics and citizen journalism, including the ethical principles of journalism and code of ethics. It also examines the pro and con arguments and another form of citizen journalism, participatory journalism. The second part is devoted to new media from history to present and social networks (Facebook, Twitter etc.), which are closely linked to the development of citizen journalism. The last part has the form of practical examples focusing on photographic and audiovisual records. Photography in the magazine Mladý svět 1959-1989

The paper deals with the treatment of photography in a Czechoslovakian magazine Mladý svět. It analyses the period since its origin in 1959 till the end of 1989. It focuses primarily on photo reporters Leoš Neboř, Miroslav Hucek and Miroslav Zajíc, who played a decisive role in the visual image of the magazine. The paper examines picture material (reportages, front pages) using the content image analysis. Its aim is to show the particularity of its work with photography, by which Mladý svět was distinguished from the majority of periodicals at that time. The quality of pictures and the space granted to them in the magazine is described by concrete examples from the whole analysed period. The paper presents the themes and methods of their visual representation as well as some major authors which helped Mladý svět win fame during the period.
