Hejzlarová, Kristýna ; Kumsa, Alemayehu (advisor) ; Soukup, Martin (referee)
The goal of this work is to analyse changes and their processes in Ethiopian society and culture of twentieth century. The first part deals with theoretical grasping of the category of change and its conception in sociology and anthropology. The second part outlines the general history of the twentieth century in Ethiopia, with emphasis on political course of events, which by its different attitudes and strategies toward selected areas to a large extent determined their form in corresponding periods. The first area is education and the second is religion, both subsections containing a summary. The third section synthesizes theoretical approaches of socio-cultural change from the first part of the paper peripherally and implies a possible alternative interpretation of real events by theoretical concepts.

Pecháček, Jakub ; Pargač, Jan (advisor) ; Kumsa, Alemayehu (referee)
Resumé This baccalaureate work is dealing with the activities of the non-profit organizations in the indian Ladakh area. Ladakh is a part of the Jammu and Kashmir state, resp. Jammu, district Leh. It is still problematic area boardering with China (Tibet) and Pakistan. Ladakh lies at the Himalayan area and it is known for its very low rainfall activity. Therefore there is not much of fertile land and that forces to farm very hard or pasturage. In the work I will concentrate on the help in educating people living in the most remote areas, namely in Zanskar. The works objektive will be the presentation of the region, the people living there and the projects that are held in the place. There is also a target to answer some of the questions related to the foreign participation in local education and ecology services. The impacts created by implemantaion of the developing projects are different. The land changes, social changes, as well as changes in culture and politics. Why do the local people need a school in such a remote mountain area? The local people have been living in the area for hundread years without any need of help so why it comes right now? Do they really want the change? What does the background look like concerning the projects? Who is in the lead of the projects and how are they applicated?...
Politics and society in Angola in the 1970s: MPLA' s struggle for the consolidation of power
Caetano Joáo, Mário Augusto ; Kumsa, Alemayehu (advisor) ; Klíma, Jan (referee) ; Kropáček, Luboš (referee)
Politics and Society in Angola in the 70's of the 20th century: MPLA's struggle for the consolidation of power is a rigorous and meticulous work on the internal dynamics existing in MPLA, first as a movement and then as a political party, through the greatest moments, which in its development occurred. The seventies of last century represent the biggest crisis in the history of the Angolan strongest political party ever. The work seeks to highlight the political consequences but also consequences in human lives that these crises have influenced. During the 70's of the 20th century four major events bring MPLA on the verge of liberation process. On the eastern front, at the beginning of the seventies, there was an uprising in the MPLA army against the central leadership. Later, Daniel Chipenda, a member of the MPLA Steering Committee, took the lead of the rebellion. In terms of leadership in MPLA, this was the first major collapse between the Steering Committee and the MPLA social and rural bases. Right after took place another revolt, which was called Active Revolt, in May 1974 in Brazzaville, Republic of Congo where MPLA had its headquarters. It was carried out by mostly intellectual dissidents, but it brought structural catastrophic consequences for MPLA, when the 25th April 1974 in Portugal played a coup...
Ethiopia in international relations, 1923-1935. Creating myths and images
Záhořík, Jan ; Kumsa, Alemayehu (advisor) ; Kropáček, Luboš (referee) ; Vilhanová, Viera (referee)
The work Ethiopia in international relations, 1923-1935. Creating myths and images, aims to analyze a position of Ethiopia in international relations with a special focus on two aspects: first, to clarify a role of creating image of Ethiopia as a "barbarous, backward country, which is necessary to civilize" in an international context; second, to show Ethiopia from the European media point of view with a particular interest in the Czechoslovak press. The work is thus not directed as clearly historical work but its message lies rather in symbolical level. On the background of historical imagology I try to show changes of imagining Ethiopia from the symbolical admission to the League of Nations and international political chessboard until the invasion of the Italian troops in the Ethiopian territory and thereby an end of waiting for foreign help. The work shows how fates of small countries like Ethiopia or Czechoslovakia have been written rather in power and colonial centres of that time. When Ethiopia entered the League of Nations as the only independent African country, it was the time of growing potential of several European countries - Italy and Germany - who were able to recast their colonial or expansive plans into reality. The European powers France and Great Britain, in distress of possible...

Bejas - history, society and culture
Záhořík, Jan ; Kumsa, Alemayehu (advisor) ; Kropáček, Luboš (referee)
A history of the Beja tribes goes back to the antiquity. The Beja nation represents o ne of the oldest known African nations. Exploring foreign countries and nations, was mainly for Greek historians, connected with several problems. Strange civilizations were described in more or less unreal colours, as for example headless or without other parts of the body. The change in viewing "the others" came in the Middle Ages thanks to Arab scholars to whom we are obliged for their valuable information about the Beja tribes. Unfortunately, we do not have a rich information base from the ancient times. We can get some information from the rock inscriptions, but there are only few relevant sources describing the Beja tribes. Especially Cerman speaking travelers and scholars of the 19th century play an important role in learning about the Beja. Their records can help us to look at their history and to know a bit from their everyday life. From the 20th century we have a lack of records and direct resources. That is the reason why reconstruction of the modern Beja history can be difficult. ft is surely interesting to consider how the view of the Beja was changing throughout the times. First of all, they were seen as the "wild ones, " dangerous nomad nation which is an enemy oj all its neighbours. Then, especially in the...
Angola from liberation struggle to present days
Před zavedením čtenáře do bojů o osvobození se v prvních dvou kapitolách autor rozhodl věnovat reáliím Angoly a etnolingvistivcké skladbě angolského teritoria.
The causes of the civil war in Côte d'Ivoire
I přesto byly africké masy vtaženy do politického procesu. V padesátých letech docházelo k rozšiřování práv afrického obyvatelstva včetně práva volebního, a analogicky s tím také rostla politická aktivita nově vzniklých afrických politických stran.
