Title of the thesis: Cistercians and Osek monastery in the 20th century. Abstract: The thesis aims to describe the Cistercian order and reflect upon it - upon its origins, its mission and its influence on society. It also recounts the events that happened in of the Czech Cistercian monasteries. The arrival of this order, which originated in France, is depicted. The main focus is put on the Czech Cistercian monastery in Osek within the Teplice region in the north of Bohemia, close to the border with Germany. The attention is especially given to the events, which happened in the 20th century, particularly those connected to the end of the Second World War, when the German monks were expelled after a period of imprisonment. Pohunek, Michal ; Kubín, Petr (advisor) ; Čechura, Jaroslav (referee)
Bc. Michal Pohunek: Dějiny kláštera Na Slovanech za husitství v letech 1419 - 1442 Abstract History of the Slavonic Monastery in the Hussite Period between 1419 - 1442 This thesis describes the history of the Slavonic monastery, situated in Nové Město in Prague, and later also known as Emaus. My thesis concerns the period of the Hussite revolt between 1419-1442. At that period Holy Communion in the Slavonic monastery was offered to lay people in the utraquist mode - i.e., both bread and wine - and the monastic community became a part of the Hussite movement. The goals of this thesis are primarily theological, in line with the discipline of church history. First I want to contribute to the understanding of the spiritual and religious atmosphere in the whole of the Czech kingdom of that historical period, by describing its particular history in the Slavonic monastery. Second I would like to contribute to the comprehension of the possibility of Benedictine monastic life in the context of the Hussite movement and the influence of the utraquist monastery on the religious evolution of the time. This needs knowledge of the situation in the monastic community and its neighbourhood in that time. To understand the theological orientation of the monastic community in that period it is necessary to describe the...
The Origins of Christian Monasticism
Lavický, Jan ; Halama, Ota (advisor) ; Kubín, Petr (referee)
Monasticism is a specific way of life, which has its place in all world religions. Its forms differ by geographical, cultural and temporal situation, however, there are several aspects, common to all monks. It is first of all interruption of contacts with their environment and escape into solitude, renunciation of property, observance of celibacy and strict asceticism. In Christianity is monasticism understood to be an answer to call of God, its goal is to be a better follower of Jesus Christ's ideal, what is more complicated for other Christians, because of their profane duties. This thesis examines Christian monasticism in its early form, before rise of main religious orders. Special attention is paid to the personal dimension of monasticism, that is to motives, which brought Desert Fathers and their disciples to monasticism, to particularity and emphases of their spirituality, ethics and everyday life. Other intention is to present a timelessness of first monks spirituality, and that it could be still inspiring for today's Christian. But it is barely possible without comprehensive introduction to the historical background, what is the third goal of this thesis.
The History of the Cistercian monastery in Žďár nad Sázavou from the middle of 14th century to 1520
Severová, Klára ; Kubín, Petr (advisor) ; Čechura, Jaroslav (referee)
The History of the Cistercian monastery in Žďár nad Sázavou from the middle of 14th century to 1520 Abstract This diploma thesis thematically continues my bachelor thesis The Beginnings of the Cistercian Monastery in Žďár nad Sázavou written and defended at this Faculty in 2010/2011. It focuses on the historical development of the Cistercian monastery in Žďár nad Sázavou from the middle of the 14th century to 1520. The history of the monastery reflects political and religious circumstances at that time: the accession of the Luxembourg dynasty to the Bohemian throne, the rise and flourishing of the country during the reign of Charles IV and the decline of the country connected with the reign of Wenceslas IV which resulted in the Hussite revolution and the religious and political crisis and instability in Bohemia. All that left its mark also on the destiny of the monastery. The internal situation of the Žďár monastery in this period was especially influenced by frequent changes in exercising founders' rights. After the last member of the Lords of Obřany died in 1312 the first to take over the role of the founders was the Lichtenburk family and their relatives, the Lords of Ronov and Bítov. Around the middle of the 14th century the monarch's influence grew as well as the influence of the Margraviate of...

Břeň, Martin ; Čechura, Jaroslav (advisor) ; Kubín, Petr (referee)
This work deals especially with a question of causes of death of the last king of the dynasty of Czech Přemyslids, Wenceslas III. It deals with the most important milestones of rule of this sovereign, that preceded this act, and could be the reasons for the murder in Olomouc, in this way, ending four centuries of ruling Přemyslite tradition. Attention is also drawn to the character of the young king, to his relationship with Czech, Polish and Hungarian nobility and elite, with his sympathizers and opponents. Next the work points to characters of possible culprits involved in the alleged plot against the king. Subsequently, the work proceeds to the consequences of Olomouc murder. Disputes over the Czech throne, and the subsequent onset of the Luxembourg dynasty. The work is based on the relationship between written sources and the author's thoughts of the current literature. This work creates a space for own interpretation and self-reflection of one of the most important and breakthrough milestone of a history of Czech kingdom, which changed the form of Czech state. That prepared the way for coming of the great sovereign and Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire from Přemyslite bloodline, Charles IV.
Miracles of Czech Medieval Saints
Slavíček, Petr ; Kubín, Petr (advisor) ; Doležalová, Eva (referee)
The present work focuses on miracles of Czech saints in the period of the early Middle Ages. In the introductory part, the concepts of sanctity and miracles and their development throughout the history are elucidated. Criteria for selecting the saints included in the work are then discussed. The work is dominantly based on hagiographic resources, yet medieval chronicles and canonization acts are also included. The main part of the work is a catalogue of miracles attributed to Czech medieval saints, particularly St. Ludmila, St. Wenceslas, St. Adalbert, St. Procopius, St. Agnes, St. Guntherus and beatific Hroznata. For each saint, both the legendary and historical lives are briefly described and the resources used are discussed. The anthology of miracles is then presented, using critical editions of the legends. The miracles attributed to the particular saints are analyzed in the context of analogical miracles in previous periods or other saints. The role of miracles in medieval society is discussed as well.

Bishop and king. Relations between the last bishops of Prague and their Přemyslid kings
Boušková, Eva ; Doležalová, Eva (advisor) ; Kubín, Petr (referee)
Bishops of the diocese of Prague were not only the highest representatives of the Church in Bohemia. They were also active at the courts of Bohemian princes and kings, not only as clergymen, but often also as diplomats. Relations between princes and kings of Bohemia on the one hand and the bishops on the other hand had remarkable dynamics and varied depending on the development of events, both domestic and international, and on their mutual likings or dislikings. The project intends to investigate the progress of the relations between bishops of Prague and kings of Bohemia throughout the late Middle Ages in the mirror of their careers, their political and cultural achievements and other information referring to them.
