Military transgressions against the human rights throughout the Mexican drug wars after 2008
Kurejová, Katarína ; Doboš, Bohumil (advisor) ; Kučera, Tomáš (referee)
This Bachelor's thesis is dealing with the issue of wars against drug cartels in Mexico. Although war on drug cartels was firstly declared by American president Richard Nixon in 1971, in Mexico it was fully declared by president Felipe Calderón in 2006. With the entrance of more than 45 000 of troops and president's aim to detain or kill all of the major drug lords, harms of civilians arrived as well. Except for drug cartels, state forces committed them, too. This thesis focuses on period after 2008, when conflicts between army and the drug cartels started to escalate; nonethless hassles between army and civilians started to escalate as well. This thesis is a descriptive case study. The aim as to look at the history of drug wars, to bring readers closer to the idea of formation of drug cartels, to analyze the government's actions against them and to describe in detail incidents, in which military transgressions against human rights took place. In described incidents it is important to concentrate on the number of people who have been hurt, what type of harms did they suffer and in which situation those harms happened. The description of cases is followed by a comparison based on aforementioned indicators. The research question of this work is how much violence has been committed by the military...
The Labour Party and the Transformation of the British Foreign Policy at the Beginning of the Cold War
Bednářová, Karolína ; Soukup, Jaromír (advisor) ; Kučera, Tomáš (referee)
In this work I deal with the fact how the British Labour Party, under the rule of C. Attlee, formulated the foreign policy of Great Britain in 1945-1951. My work explores whether and how Labour's foreign policy changed at the beginning of the Cold War versus the Conservatives in the 1930's. At the same time, my work focuses on the Labour Party and its victory in the 1945 elections. I examine the issue by comparative method, when I compare how the foreign policy of Great Britain was formed during the 1930s and 1940s. In particular, the thesis compares relations with the United States and the Soviet Union, as it was the two strongest world powers of the time, and the entire Cold War was conducted between them. At work, I conclude that foreign policy and relations with the US and the USSR did not change at the beginning of the Cold War. We can see a few differences in Labour access compared to the Conservatives, but the UK government continued its foreign policy, which already gave a rise and direction to the Conservative Party in the second half of the 1930's.
Lety v české politice - koncentrační tábor v Letech u Písku v české politice od devadesátých let po současnost
KUČERA, Tomáš
The subject of the bachelor's work is to monitor the history and the existence of the camp in Lety. We focus mostly on the time when generally Roma people were interned here. The goal of the work is to describe the events that happened after the pig factory farm was settled on the place of the former concentration camp. The crucial point is to gather the declarations of some politicians and their attitude to the issue. Inevitable part of the work is also the interview with one Czech expert in this subject
The influence of the US and other NATO states on German policy and deployment of the Bundeswehr in the ISAF mission in Afghanistan
Dvořák, Pavel ; Handl, Vladimír (advisor) ; Kučera, Tomáš (referee) ; Urbanovská, Jana (referee)
This dissertation focuses on Germany policy concerning the deployment of the Bundeswehr within the ISAF mission in Afghanistan between 2001 and 2014. These issues will be examined in the context of the German army's foreign engagement after 1990. The main goal will be to assess how the decision-making process of the German government and the members of the parliament was affected by their taking into consideration Germany's ties to the USA and other important NATO members. The German government strived to maintain its influence within the NATO alliance and, at the same time, its reputation of a reliable and responsible ally. The impact of this external (alliance-related) factor will also be analysed with respect to the "culture of restraint" ̶ Germany's traditionally restrained approach to its armed forces deployment. Thus in addition to concrete examples of the German government's decisions on strengthening its military engagement in Afghanistan in relation to their NATO partners, the dissertation will concentrate on some ISAF combat operations in which German troops were involved. In the end, this work will elaborate on the consequences of the ISAF mission for Germany's future policy concerning the deployment Bundeswehr abroad. The research methods applied in this dissertation include...
The Military component of the Counterrevolution - Egypt case- The root causes of the deep-state and its military hardcore counterattack against Egypt uprising.
Saad, Mohamed ; Kučera, Tomáš (advisor) ; Ludvík, Jan (referee)
In the course of time, the Egyptian army has developed a complicated network of economic interests as a privileged establishment, and independent from civilian oversight or political surveillance. This dissertation argues that; the well-established and long lasting independent economic interests may turn the military establishment to an independent stakeholder and closed, conservative group within the society seeks to preserve its own privileges by controlling over the political power and resist any external oversight including the democratic reforms that may create a threat to these privileges. Such military establishment is a direct threat to any democratic transition. In this case, the armies securitize the political sphere raising the democratic reforms as foreign conspiracy and an existential threat to its privileges and raise the nationalism and xenophobic rhetoric as it needs to create a political justification for their security practices that aim to crush the opposition and secure the political power. I suppose that the Egyptian case shows causal relations between the economic interests of the military establishment and the nationalism as a dominant ideology. Such military is leaning to not only control the political power, but it aims to militarize the societal values and control over the...

Balance of identity and balance of power: The case of conflict dynamics between Saudi Arabia and Iran
Kováčiková, Zuzana ; Aslan, Emil (advisor) ; Kučera, Tomáš (referee)
This thesis applies the concept of religious (national) identity to the cases of Saudi Arabia, Iran and their proxy allies - state and non-state actors - in Lebanon, Syria and Yemen. The aim was to show that in the Middle East, Sunni and Shiite affiliations matter in the relationship between the regional powers and respective proxies, as opposing to realist statement that alliances, conflicts and political developments are only governed by pragmatic power interests. Additionally, the work examines whether religious national identities have impact on the dynamics of proxy conflicts. Overall, the objective was to establish comprehensive image of how ideational/constructivist and pragmatic/realist factors work in combination to influence alliances, enmities and conflicts in the Middle East. Using qualitative methods of research, religious (national) identities of Saudi Arabia, Iran and their allies in Lebanon, Syria and Yemen were constructed so as to create ideational and realist points of departure, and then interlinked to show how convergence of religious identities helps in creating durable alliances if used in targeted manner as a strategic tool which can help safeguard national interests. The work shows notable differences in the use of this tool between Saudi Arabia and Iran, suggesting that it...
Study of the mechanism of gene expression regulation at the level of functional organization of chromatin domains.
Hornáček, Matúš ; Cmarko, Dušan (advisor) ; Kučera, Tomáš (referee) ; Stixová, Lenka (referee)
- 1 - ABSTRACT Nucleoli are formed on the basis of genes of ribosomal DNA (rDNA) clusters called Nucleolus Organizer Regions (NORs). The essential structural components of the nucleoli, Fibrillar Centers (FC) and Dense Fibrillar Components (DFC), together compose FC/DFC units. These units are centers of rDNA transcription by RNA polymerase I (pol I), as well as the early processing events, in which an essential role belongs to fibrillarin. Each FC/DFC unit probably corresponds to a single transcriptionally active gene. In our work we study changes of FC/DFC units in the course of cell cycle. Correlative light and electron microscopy analysis showed that the pol I and fibrillarin positive nucleolar beads correspond to individual FC/DFC units. In vivo observations showed that at early S phase, when transcriptionally active ribosomal genes were replicated, the number of the units in each cell increased by 60 to 80 %. During that period the units transiently lost pol I, but not fibrillarin. Then, until the end of interphase, number of the units did not change, and their duplication was completed only after the cell division, by mid G1 phase. This peculiar mode of reproduction suggests that a considerable subset of ribosomal genes remain transcriptionally silent from mid S phase to mitosis but become again active...
Long term planning of water distribution network rehabilitation
Hos, Lukáš ; Kučera, Tomáš (referee) ; Tuhovčák, Ladislav (advisor)
This diploma thesis is about long-term rehabilitation planning of water distribution system. First part is about legislative demands on rehabilitation planning in Czech Republic and about methods used abroad to do long-term reahabilitation planning. Plan for drought and water scarcity
Bakota, Filip ; Coufal,, Marek (referee) ; Kučera, Tomáš (advisor)
The aim of the diploma thesis is to describe and prepare the pilot plan for drought and water scarcity for the selected locality, according to the prepared amendment of water law. Recent years have shown that drought will play a significant role in water supply in the future. Therefore, the need for tools to provide procedures and guidelines for individual administrations is more than important. The first part of the diploma thesis deals with issues of drought and water scarcity, climate change and prospects for the future. The next section describes a plan for drought and water scarcity. In the next parts of the diploma thesis, there are procedures that can mitigate or completely avoid the consequences of drought. From this informations, a pilot study of the plan for drought and water scarcity for the town of Počátky is being prepared in the next part.
