These specific aspects were viewed in a broader political, cultural and economic context, reflecting Italy's position in the European Union in terms of both past and present education levels. Based on the study of research literature and the legal regulations, two basic adult education systems were defined: general school education, and adult professional instruction with further vocational training. In view of the significant transformation of Italian society in the second half of the 20th century, including the aging population and migratory waves, the thesis also deals with education as a key tool for migrant integration and also mentions the possibilities of educating its elderly population. The final chapter is a reflection on the limits and possibilities of the existing education system.
