Valentová, Hana ; Končelík, Jakub (advisor) ; Cihlářová, Gabriela (referee)
This thesis examines two Czech leading dailies and their coverage of the US presidential election in 2004. Based on the quantitative content analysis of Mlada fronta Ones and Hospodatske noviny during the period of one month leading to the election (i.e . beginning with the first presidential debate) the main aim of the study is to identify and describe the different approaches undertaken by the abovementioned newspapers. The hypothesis assume s that the MF Ones dealt mainly with 'popular aspects' of the election (like meeting s, image and character of the candidates, their families etc.) , while the Hospodarske noviny focused more on political and platform issues. The study is divided into two parts . The first one addresses the theoretical background - brief remarks regarding the media and elections in general; the outline of the presidential campaign within the realm of media and journalistic coverage; the analysis of the news values champ ioned by the Czech media ; and finally the characteristic of the analyzed newspapers. The second part is designed more practical in scope: it states the aim of the study as well as the employed methodology and code book. Last but not least it contains the results of the analysis and their interpretation. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)
A legacy of political trials in Czechoslovakia in 50's
Hohl, Ondřej ; Končelík, Jakub (advisor) ; Bednařík, Petr (referee)
The Communist Party seized political power after the putsch in February 1948 in Czechoslovakia. Communists divested their political opponents also with an assistance of political trials. Number of victims of this reign of terror is more than 260 thousands. One from the greatest trials was a trial with "Rudolf Slansky and company", which took place in November 1952. After this trial II communists with high status was executed. During the period in the year 1968 in Czechoslovakia, which is usually called "The Prague Spring", when a censorship was suspended (in March 1968), arose a public discussion about this political trials, their victims and instigators and law rehabilitations. Media contributed to this discussion very much. In three printed media which I probed ("Reporter", "Student" and "Nova mysl") went through the trial with "Slansky a company" at most. Not only the victims, but also through the widows of executed and politically responsible men. A method of creation this trial, his historical context and role of soviet advisors was examined in details too. After a military occupation by The Soviet Union and "friendly armies" on 21 SI August and a restoration of censorship in September 1968, the discussion was practically closed. The regional daily Průboj 1968-1969
Müllerová, Michaela ; Končelík, Jakub (advisor) ; Bednařík, Petr (referee)
My diploma work concerns about the description of a regional journal Průboj, that was published in Northern Bohemia for 70 years. I focused on late sixties and tried to describe a personal constitution of editor's office including economical aspects of publishing. I also made a particular content analysis covering the time period from April 1968 till August 1969. Especially in the time of the "Prague Spring" Průboj maintained social reforms and their political representatives. That is why it was very popular with public. Průboj reporters commented on political situation in the Czechoslovakia practically without any censorship. This was also a reason why stand-pat members of regional committee of the Communist Party often argued with them about their opinions. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)

Podzimková, Gabriela ; Končelík, Jakub (advisor) ; Jirák, Jan (referee)
This article, entitled "Distorted Cartogram of Virtual World of Czech Newspapers", examines a coverage of international news by two dailies. The basic research question was, which countries are covered most. The presented study attempts to identify which countries dominate international news, and explain why this countries attract so big attention of editors (or gatekeepers). The research activity was focused on the application of a quantitative content analysis by Bernard Berelson. But the analysis of examined newspapers Blesk and Mlada fronta DNES was focused not only on a number of coverage but also a size of articles dedicated to particular countries. Next variables was source of news, and presence of graphic supplements. Interpretation of results is based on a study of Galtung and Ruge about the structure of foreign news and news values and on a world system theory. Some of the results agree with previous findings. It shows that elite nations or core nations in the world system often dominante the flow of news and coverage in international communication. The results also confirm that geographical distance, economic ties and cultural affinity are not strong factors deciding, whether a international news event will be covered or not. Analysis of news sources shows, that examined newspapers rely most on...
Media (self)presentation of selected representatives of the CPC between years 1967 - 1969
Suchá, Veronika ; Končelík, Jakub (advisor) ; Vondrová, Jitka (referee)
The name of this thesis is Media (Self) presentation of selected representatives of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia (CPC) between the years 1967 and 1969. The crisis in the political system, which happened between the years 1967 and 1969 in Czechoslovakia, changed the social role of the media. The media became an active element of democratic plurality for a short time. The relationship between political authorities and the media changed too. The CPC power monopoly in the sphere of media was disturbed. During the period after the military invasion of to Czechoslovakia (August 1968) by the Soviet Union the media and journalist returned to the old ways of operating. This work tries to answer to few essential questions: Are there some differences among media self presentation of the leaders of the CPC? Were Czechoslovakian politicians prepared to cooperate with a truly independent and strong media? Were they able to use the media to really have a dialogue with the public? Bobková, Klára ; Končelík, Jakub (advisor) ; Groman, Martin (referee)
Jan Masaryk's death has not yet been clearly explained and has been a white spot in the Czech and Czechoslovak history. This thesis, based on the data content analysis of local media (daily papers) attempts to make clear the media context of Jan Masaryk's death. The first step of this analysis is the theoretical part of the thesis, which focuses on historical background of the problem, on key political affairs in connection with development of daily press. SPSS programme was used for the content analysis , introduction to historical periods was elaborated with help of literature dealing with contemporary Czech and Czechoslovak history. Regarding the output of analysis, the core ofthe hypothesis is being confirmed, i.e.: the perception of Jan Masaryk's death has differed in regard to the the social and political change. Nevertheless, the anticipated debate and increase of interest concerning Masaryk's death did not follow the pattern ofchanges in the Czechoslovak society in 1968/69. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)
