Raffaj, Ivan ; Kučera, Tomáš (advisor) ; Knutelská, Viera (referee)
The thesis offers a comparison of integration of Muslims and approaches toward radical Islam in three countries: Germany, France, and Sweden. These three countries used to represent three main integration types. The thesis argue that these three types do not longer exist and tries to verify convergence hypothesis. This is done by the analysis of particular selected aspects of integration of Muslims and counter-radicalization and counter-terrorism measures related to radical Islam in every examined country. The thesis further evaluates the effectiveness of integration and counter-radicalization approaches in selected countries and indicates which country appears to be the most effective based on selected criteria. Based on the analysis of individual countries, the thesis assumes which integration and counter-radicalization approaches or their combination toward Muslims might be the most effective.

Dufek, Filip ; Karásek, Tomáš (advisor) ; Knutelská, Viera (referee)
The purpose of this thesis is to highlight the multi-component conception of the power in the international relations. The military and material power is not a sufficient element in order to apply the influence in the contemporary international political environment. It will point out the reality that in the international relations there are situated the political approaches that lead to the opportunity to be perceived in a positive way by other actors within the international relations. The final impact of these activities is to reach the convenient political environment in order to apply the own political interests and preferences of the state. This opportunity is fulfilled by the wielding of "soft power" and by, for these objectives defined, instruments. The aim of this thesis is to take hold of the one of the most complex instrument that is used for the intentions that were mentioned above. It is the public and cultural diplomacy. "Soft power" and its instrument in the form of public and cultural diplomacy is researched in an objective way in the case of the Czech Republic.
The Discourse of the Slovak Political Parties on European Integration in the years 2002-2012
Karcolová, Marianna ; Karlas, Jan (advisor) ; Knutelská, Viera (referee)
The aim of this thesis is to interpret how the European Union was constructed in discourse of Slovak political parties from 2002 to 2012. The thesis departs from the social constructivist assumption of mutual constitutiveness of structures and agents. Focusing on the role of ideas in European integration, a concept of polity ideas or normative ideas about the legitimate political order, as defined by Markus Jachtenfuchs, is applied. Applying discursive analysis to political programmes, political parties' utterances about European integration, in particular about democracy, rights and internal security, foreign policy and security, welfare and identity are assigned to four ideal types: Federal state, Intergovernmental cooperation, Economic community and Network. For the research purposes political programmes of three Slovak political parties are analysed: Christian Democratic Movement, Direction - Social Democracy and The Slovak Democratic and Christian Union - Democratic Party. The analysis of the political programmes showed that the Slovak political parties do not have a consistent vision of the future of European integration. A high number of descriptive utterances was found in the programmes. Moreover, beliefs about democracy, rights and internal security, foreign policy and security, welfare...

Čavojec, Jakub ; Knutelská, Viera (advisor) ; Plechanovová, Běla (referee)
This thesis deals with the topic of individual parliamentary scrutiny of European affairs in Slovakia. The aim of this thesis is to determine which factors influenced the formally strong system of parliamentary scrutiny in the Slovak National Assembly. 6 factors will be analyzed - Late accession to the EU, parliamentary strength, bargaining strength in the Council of EU, public euroscepticism, euroscepticism of political parties and the frequency of coalition and minority governments. The strength of parliamentary scrutiny can also be influenced by informal aspects. The informal aspects in this thesis will be mainly concerned with the efforts of the members of the European Affairs Committee to acquire additional information about legislative proposals of the EU in an informal way and also their efforts for a better cooperation in parliamentary scrutiny among various political parties. The empirical analysis found, that the factor of late accession to the EU and euroscepticism of political parties had the biggest effect on the formally strong system of parliamentary scrutiny in Slovakia. A partial effect can be also attributed to the factors of public euroscepticism and the frequency of coalition and minority governments. Even though a formally strong system of parliamentary scrutiny does exist in...

Both Ireland and Czech Republic are, according to the typology used, classified as "small states". During the ratification process of the Treaty of Lisbon, the European Union encountered obstacles caused by the result of the first Irish referendum and by the stance of Czech President Václav Klaus, regarding the completion of the ratification process. These obstacles led to the formulation of specific demands that were presented to the European Union. This thesis examines the strategies that were used in this stage of the ratification process to achieve legal guarantees for Ireland and Czech Republic. These strategies are analyses using official documents and public statements of national and European political elites. In its conclusive part the thesis states the applied...

This thesis provides empirical findings in the field of the usage of the EWM. In particular it focuses on the adaption of the Czech, Slovak, and Polish parliaments to the EWM and analyses whether the understanding of the principle of subsidiarity by the respective chambers influences their activity in the EWM. This thesis combines a broad range of data sources including: firstly, primary sources such as official documents, reasoned opinions available from relevant databases (IPEX) and a questionnaire filled out by the parliamentary staff; secondly, secondary sources such as previous research in the field, and lastly direct observations. This study concludes that subsidiarity control is understood by the national parliaments as a tool to defend their legislative prerogatives. Furthermore it suggests that the inclusion of references to the principle of proportionality in the reasoned opinions increases the...

Houda, Ondřej ; Knutelská, Viera (advisor) ; Plechanovová, Běla (referee)
This thesis is embedded in the theoretical approach of multilevel governance and presumption of the rational behaviour of actors. Using the method of process tracing it aims to uncover the legislative process in the European Union. It is a single case study and as a case was chosen the negotiation of the regulation of the citizens' initiative. Various actors were involved in the negotiations, this thesis focuses on the main one - European Commission, European Parliament, the Council, interest organisations and national parliaments. The thesis presumed, that all actors will try to push through their interests based on their rational choice. This presumption was verified, although the success rate of the players varied a lot. As the most successful should be considered the European Parliament, who defended the interests of the individuals and the Council, which apparently represented the interests of the governments of the member states (especially in the issues of lowering the bureaucratic burden). The interest organisations showed their positions clearly, however the Commission did not take their positions much into account while preparing the draft regulation. The position of the national parliaments was different then presumed. Although the thesis expected them to be directly involved in the...
