Combinatorics in Physics
Mervardová, Tereza ; Koupilová, Zdeňka (advisor) ; Kácovský, Petr (referee)
The main objective of this bachelor's thesis is to help the reader apply combinatorics in physics problems, especially in problems in statistical physics. In the first chapter, the reader is reminded of combinatorial basic definitions and relations. In the following chapter, a set of problems is created in such a way that it can be followed later by problems from statistical physics, especially problems related to microstates and macrostates of quantum systems with small number of particles. Furthermore, this thesis contains problems using combinatorics in their solution from other parts of physics as well. This thesis can also be used as a collection of problems in selected topics of statistical physics.

Development of experimental sets for a new conception of Optics in the Interactive Physics Laboratory I
Kopřiva, Tomáš ; Kácovský, Petr (advisor) ; Koudelková, Věra (referee)
The main goal of this thesis is to create five experimental units and worksheets for an experimental set called Optics: Qualitative approach in the Interactive Physics Laboratory - a project of the Department of Physics Education. The Interactive Physics Laboratory is shortly described in the first chapter, along with information about the course of experimenting in it and feedback we receive from attendees. The second chapter is focused on theoretical background about geometrical optics, the human eye, the sight and selected misconceptions about optics and sight. The experimental units were based on this theoretical background. The development (including feedback from students) of the experimental units and related worksheets as well as the final form of the experimental units and their worksheets can be found in the third chapter.

Weissgráb, Lukáš ; Kácovský, Petr (advisor) ; Koupilová, Zdeňka (referee)
Title: ConcepTests supporting the teaching of mechanics using the Peer Instruction method Author: Lukáš Weissgráb Department: Department of Physics Education Supervisor: RNDr. Petr Kácovský, Ph.D., Department of Physics Education Abstract: This diploma thesis focuses on the development of conceptual questions in mechanics (including their testing), which are typical for the method of Peer Instruction. The research part of the thesis follows the historical background of this method and provides an overview of its most important elements including the possibility of connection to other teaching methods. In addition, it presents various collections of conceptual questions in both czech and foreign languages. The research and development part of the thesis is devoted to the preparation of conceptual questions in mechanics which are based on selected misconceptions. These problems were subsequently tested on approximately 130 high school students and the results were statistically processed. In the statistical processing of tasks, we were focused on their difficulty, discrimination and distractor analysis. Keywords: conceptests, Peer Instruction, mechanics, physics teaching

Kácovský, Petr ; Böhm, Pavel (advisor) ; Drozd, Zdeněk (referee)
Title: Using dataloggers in physics teaching (focused on Vernier experimental system) Author: Petr Kácovský Department: Department of Physics Education Supervisor: Mgr. Pavel Böhm Supervisor's e-mail address: pavel.bohm@mff.cuni.cz Abstract: Modernizing equipment enables schools to involve advanced computer- aided systems in physics teaching. This work especially focuses on systems capable of recording and storing measured data for later evaluation - the dataloggers. The introduction of this work is devoted to a survey among physics teachers that should investigate what form of instructions they prefer; then a brief search of existing ma- terials follows. The main part of the work consists of newly created instructions for experiments with dataloggers of the Vernier experimental system, primarily designed to serve tea- chers to implement physics experiments in their teaching. The instructions always include a description how to prepare and undertake the measurement, how to process the measured data and what questions and tasks for students can be connected with this part of physics. Experiments described in this work mainly focus on secondary school thermodynamics (or more precisely on molecular physics and thermals) and their thematic intersection is energy, its forms, transmission and conservation.
Students preconceptions about heat and temperature
Čečák, Michal ; Mandíková, Dana (advisor) ; Kácovský, Petr (referee)
This thesis deals with the preconceptions and misconceptions of students in the field of heat and temperature. Here is an overview of textbooks for elementary and secondary schools with topics concerning heat and temperature. This thesis contains a brief characteristic of notions preconceptions and misconceptions, characteristic of Active Learning methods and characteristic of Interactive Lecture Demonstrations. This thesis also contains research of Students preconceptions and misconceptions about heat and temperature (mainly students of grammar schools). For this research was used HTCE test. Results of the research are processed for all students and for students of each class. There are three worksheets (translated from English), which should help with removing misconceptions.
Czech localization of some parts of the Vernier experimental system
Kácovský, Petr ; Böhm, Pavel (advisor) ; Šabatka, Zdeněk (referee)
The Vernier experimental educational system, which is currently nding its way to Czech schools, is a very practical visual aid in teaching science. The content of this work is a brief introduction to the use of the Vernier system, an overview of commonly available alternatives to this system and, in particular, a set of six user manuals for the sensors often used in physics. (Barometer, current probe, dierential voltage probe, stainless steel temperature sensor, motion detector and photogate.) The manuals contain instructions concerning the work with various sensors, describe the principles of their operation and technical specications. The added value is represented by suggestions for experiments that can be performed with these sensors in teaching. This work is complemented by a brief description of the methods used to verify the technical parameters of the above mentioned sensors.

Machalická, Jana ; Kácovský, Petr (advisor) ; Gottwald, Stanislav (referee)
Title: Experimental sets in optics for Interactive Physics Laboratory Author: Jana Machalická Department: Department of Physics Education Supervisor: RNDr. Petr Kácovský, Ph.D., Department of Physics Education Abstract: As part of this thesis, a literature review focused on the topic of optics experiments was conducted. Building on the results of this review, four experimental stations were designed and realized based on the needs of the Interactive Physics Laboratory (IPL), operated by the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, Charles University. Corresponding worksheets have also been created and provided to the students participating in each given experiment. The individual experiments, which are focused on the fields of geometrical and wave optics, are described in detail and accompanied by instructions on setting up the stations, as well as important notes on teaching methodology. Following the launch of this Optics experimental suite, a qualitative study exploring the effect of visiting the IPL on the understanding of the related physics concepts was performed by means of a short questionnaire on a small number of respondents. Several conclusions drawn from this study remain as interesting areas of future work. Keywords: physics experiments, labs, optics, secondary school
