Author-addressee relationship in art textbooks and its translation from Spanish into Czech
Bulířová, Anna ; Králová, Jana (advisor) ; Ježková, Slavomíra (referee)
The existence of an author and an addressee is inherent to every communicative process. The author and the addressee are considered important stylistic factors, since they determine a great deal the overall composition of the text. When writing his text, the author caters for the expectations and the competence of the addressee, and on the other hand, the addressee receives and interprets his text according to how it is formulated and how it complies with the conventions for the text type in question. The relation between the author and the addressee is reflected in the text and this reflection could be called "polarity". Polarity may be perceived in the composition of the rhetorical perspective, for it is expressed by the use of the second person singular and of the first person singular or plural, by the use of rhetorical questions and exclamatory phrases, by anticipating the reactions of the addressee, etc. The relation between the partners in the communication is governed by norms and since norms do not coincide in all cultures, we have to bear in mind that to render successfully the original and to meet with the expectations of our addressee we have to cross the cultural barrier and adjust the polarity of the text. The present master` s thesis deals with discourse polarity in original Spanish and...
Figures of speech in translation contemporary Venezuelan press
Melicharová, Lenka ; Králová, Jana (advisor) ; Ježková, Slavomíra (referee)
Diplomová práce se dělí na dvě části. První část se teoreticky věnuje metafoře a metonymii v české a španělské terminologii, definici populismu, specifickému jazyku politiků a v neposlední řadě způsobům překladu rétorických figur z češtiny do španělštiny.
Sociological aspects of translation norms in legal environments
Valenta, Jan ; Králová, Jana (advisor) ; Ježková, Slavomíra (referee)
This thesis paper attempts to discover the processes used to set up and negotiate translation norms in legal environments. It is based on the existing theoretical knowledge of legal translation and on the theoretical works on translation norms, especially the works by Gideon Toury, Theo Hermans, Andrew Chesterman and other authors. The aim of this thesis paper is to confront these theories with the every-day experiences of translating in legal environments. The research method used for this purpose is qualitative sociological research - a combination of the analytical procedures of grounded theory first drafted by Strauss and Glaser and data collection procedures based on "problem-centered interviews" and on the investigation of documents. The total of 10 respondents - translators who work or have worked in law firms - have participated in the survey. Legal translation is very specific in terms of the processes whereby translation norms are set up and negotiated. The key issue is the issue of liability. Translators employed in law firms are not liable for the final wording of the translation - it is the lawyer who is held liable for the translation that forms a part of his or her legal service or advice. This influences the mutual relations between the translator and the lawyer who plays the role of the...

Julio-Cesar Santoyo and his contribution to the development of translation studies
Zlatohlavá, Petra ; Králová, Jana (advisor) ; Ježková, Slavomíra (referee)
The purpose of this work is to evaluate the contribution of Julio-César Santoyo, a contemporary Spanish theoretician, to the development of translation studies. We have provided an overall summary of his work together with an overview of its reception. The analysis of individual works and theoretical knowledge is preceded by an overview of theoretical concepts applied in the 20th century Spain, which serves as an outline of the context and environment which influences this theoretician. We have focused on all three aspects of his work, i.e. theory, criticism and history of translation. Our task was to provide a complete insight into his thinking within these disciplines. Our analysis is based not only on his book publications but also on numerous specialized articles which he has been continuously publishing throughout his entire academic career. Within the translation theory field we have focused on particular issues Santoyo deals with in his works, mainly on defining the meaning, purpose and position of translation in miscellaneous areas of human knowledge and on topics closely linked with translation. Let us mention for example the endosmosis and exosmosis translation concept, limits of translation, transient nature of translation or reflections upon the role of translation in literature as well as upon...
Valentín García Yebra and his contribution to translation studies
Šašková, Daniela ; Králová, Jana (advisor) ; Ježková, Slavomíra (referee)
The purpose of the paper "Valentín García Yebra and his Contribution to Translation Studies" is to provide an overall analysis of García Yebra's works and their reception in Spanish press and magazines specialized on translation. Part of the paper is dedicated to the summary of García Yebra's predecessors on this field, to his biography and his career as a professional translator. But the major emphasis rests upon the analysis of his thoughts on theory, critique and history of translation. As a part of the analysis, we provide a summary of all the books in question. The purpose of the analysis is to determine the most important areas of García Yebra's thoughts and to synthesize them into thematic units. The most significant areas contain the definition of translation and some general ideas on the role and possibility of translation. Next, we deal with the types of translation, the two-phase process of translation and the factors affecting it. We also study the function of linguistics in García Yebra's approach to translation. The following sections deal with the investigator's approach to dynamic equivalence, with the role of translation in enriching a language and with the education of translators, which was one of his life's missions. Next sections of the analysis are dedicated to the problems of...
