Sources and Development of Germany's Position towards NATO Enlargement, 1990-97
Eberle, Jakub ; Handl, Vladimír (advisor) ; Kunštát, Miroslav (referee)
This thesis strives to explain formation of German government's attitude towards NATO enlargement within the years of 1990-97. The approach presented is embedded in social constructivist theories of foreign policy and international relations, which emphasize the importance of values, norms and language and downplay the influence of material factors. A theoretical model for analysis of German foreign policy making is proposed, comprising of three essential steps: First, it is the identity that determines limits of states' behaviour. Second, different foreign policy roles arise and engage in a role conflict within discourse. Third, the actual decision is constituted under the influence of external factors. Further, key concepts of understanding the normative background of German foreign policy are put under examination, including the ideas of civilian power and strategic culture. The essence of this background in terms of norms and values is examined consequently. Evolution of different variants of Germany's position towards the enlargement issue is explained and key actors involved in the debate are identified, including their interpretations of German identity and the clash they involved themselves in. Finally, crucial external factors are described and their influence on the decision making process,...
The Cultural Development of the Territory of the former German Democratic Republic in the Period from the Fifties to the Seventies with the Emphasis on the Area of the Pop Music
Karafiát, Nikola ; Vilímek, Tomáš (advisor) ; Handl, Vladimír (referee)
Bachelor thesis "Cultural development in the territory of the former GDR in the period from 50th to 70th years of the 20th century with an emphasis in the field of the pop music" deals with the image of East German state's cultural policy towards the pop music in the period starting with the end of the World War II and the Soviet military administration of the area, comprising the period of construction of the Berlin Wall in 1961 and a brief liberalization phase in the mid-sixties, and ending in the fall of the seventies. An expatriation of the famous East German socialist singer and poet Wolf Biermann in autumn 1976 marks an end to the core of this thesis. It also briefly mentions the development in the other areas of East German cultural life at that time (due to the restricted number of pages only literature and art are mentioned).

Extreme Right After the Unification of Germany
The Role of ASEM in Eurasian Relations
Beroun, Vladimír ; Voráček, Emil (advisor) ; Eichler, Jan (referee) ; Maitah, Mansoor (referee) ; Handl, Vladimír (referee)
The main objective of our doctoral thesis is to evaluate the role of the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) and its political, economic and socio-cultural pillars as a political process in interregional (multilevel) governance in Eurasian relations. We have conducted a unique case study that is based on a holistic qualitative interpretation by means of a postpositivist perspective and discourse analysis. Given the transitional and multidimensional nature of interregionalism as a political process, we are applying the (neo)realist balancing with elements of (neo)liberal multilateralism and social constructivism as the basic theoretical approach. Based on this structure, we have come to the conclusion that (1) ASEM as an interregional policy framework is too flexible (in terms of its scope and agenda-setting) and too inclusive (in terms of its enlargement). (2) Given the inability of ASEM to actively respond to various challenges and to implement properly its policies through its currently available instruments, this Eurasian interregional process cannot be regarded as a fully-fledged contribution the global (multilevel) governance. (3) Therefore interregionalism as part of the ASEM process will not lead to a creation of an "Eurasian Century", despite the undeniable need to identify corresponding supranational political regimes that will efficiently promote a balance of power between Europe, Asia and America. (4) Interregionalism as a political approach cannot be demoted to a loose and informal interaction of nation states or regions only because the current challenges in international relations require an organized and results-oriented framework for cooperation. (5) Additionally, the existing bilateral relations between individual countries in Asia and Europe will continue to be the key and most efficient form of solving various issues and challenges between the states.
