Dance magazine "Taneční listy" as an example of cultural magazine
Kocourková, Lucie ; Köpplová, Barbara (advisor) ; Halada, Jan (referee)
The thesis "Dance Magazine Tanecni listy as an Example of Cultural Magazine" deals with the forty years of the existence of specialized professional magazine Tanecnf listy and with a brief history of dance journalism, especially dance critique. Its history goes back to the 19th century. In the period between the two world wars, the genre was finally established, mostly due to the work of theorists E. Siblfk and J. Reimoser. The latter is considered a founder of Czech dance science and is important because of his several attempts to publish a regular dance magazine. Although there were several rather commercial dance magazines at that time run successfully, Reimoser wasn't successful until 1947 when he started to run the magazine Tanecni listy (until 1950). A new generation of dance journalists founded a new monthly with the same name Tanecni listy in 1963 and this title existed on the media market until 2003. The magazine dealt with all sorts of dance, as a performing art and as leisure activity as well: dance in the theatre, both classical and modem, pantomime, folk dances, amateur and professional dance sport etc. The magazine therefore serves as a source of the history of dance of the past circa 50 years. When this magazine ended in 2003 due to financial problems, dance journalists lost their publication...
Austria and the Eastern question 1829-1841
Šedivý, Miroslav ; Skřivan, Aleš (advisor) ; Kovář, Martin (referee) ; Halada, Jan (referee)
Relying on thorough examination of relevant documents housed in the archives in Vienna, Paris, London, Berlin and Munich, this thesis analyzes the attitude of one of the most important personalities of the 19th century, Austrian Chancellor Metternich, towards the Ottoman Empire and his behaviour in the complicated evolution of the Eastern Question from 1829 to 1841, in other words from the signature of the Treaty of Adrianople to the conclusion of the second London Treaty regarding the Straits. Attention is paid particularly to the final phase of the Greeks' struggle for independence and the relating Russian-Ottoman war, the French expedition to Algeria, the two Ottoman-Egyptian crises, the Rhine crisis caused by the complications in the Levant, the Russian-British rivalry in the East and the difficult situation of the Christians in Syria in the spring of 1841. A further reason for writing this thesis is to point out some of Metternich's hitherto unknown characteristics and diplomatic procedures transpiring from his Near Eastern policy. In the whole period covered by this research, Metternich pursued the policy of conservation: he tried to preserve the declining Ottoman Empire and avoid serious complications in the Levant caused by the attitudes of other European Powers or the internal disorder of the...
The position of women and "women question" in late Victorian and Edwardian society
Tumis, Stanislav ; Kovář, Martin (advisor) ; Skřivan, Aleš (referee) ; Halada, Jan (referee)
The position of women in British society at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries was influenced by the traditional conservative ideas which allocated their place in "private (domestic) sphere"; these views continued to have in Britain considerable influence and they were moreover supported by the new ideologies of social darwinism, social maternalism or eugenics. At the same time the influence of representatives of liberal, democratic ideas, the so called new people advocating women emancipation in all spheres of life largely grew. It is not possible to perceive the end of Victorian and Edwardian era as a period in which the modern ideas on women position in society succeeded; on the contrary old conservative concepts though often in new context and another "more moderate" version had the support of the majority of British society, including women. The main reason why the feminists failed to enforce their radical claims at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries lied in the fact that women movement was confined largely to the liberal elites of middle classes and failed to obtain wider support.
