Journeys to 'I'. Manifestations of individualism in Czech culture of the 19th century
Piorecká, Kateřina ; Bendová, Eva ; Hrdina, Martin
Kniha přináší příspěvky ze 41. ročníku plzeňského mezioborového sympozia, věnovaného manifestacím individualismu v průběhu „dlouhého“ 19. století. Otázky spojené se sebereflexí, sebeprezentací či sebeuskutečněním rezonovaly různým způsobem ve světě mužů a žen z řad měšťanstva, dělnictva i aristokracie. Autoři studií věnují pozornost vyhraněným osobnostem a leckdy složitému hledání a vymezování jejich pozice ve společnosti – vůči ideologickým projektům, uměleckým konvencím apod. Problematika individualismu je v publikaci obsahující obrazovou přílohu nahlížena z perspektivy historie, filozofie a různých uměnověd.
The poet’s window into time. Boredom as a suppressed agent of the artistic maturation of Jaroslav Vrchlický
Hrdina, Martin
The work focuses on the circumstances of the time that poet and translator Jaroslav Vrchlický spent in Italy in the summer of 1875. Based on Vrchlický’s journal entries, correspondence and literary works of the time (especially unpublished poems Spleen and Ideal), the author considers the fundamental role of boredom at a time when Vrchlický was coming of age as a person and a creator. He focuses especially on the period during the formulation of the well-known program of the epic, which was the main artistic output of his stay in Italy. With support from Simmel’s interpretation of the work of Arthur Schopenhauer whose pessimistic view of the world Vrchlický rejected, Vrchlický’s epic gesture appears to be a possible method for overcoming melancholy, which he faced as a modern person.
Historical myth in Julius Zeyer's Work
Křišťanová, Dita ; Vlnas, Vít (advisor) ; Charvát, Petr (referee) ; Hrdina, Martin (referee)
Historical myth in Julius Zeyer's Work PhDr. Dita Křišťanová ABSTRACT: Ph.D. thesis Historical myth in Julius Zeyer's Work is the result of my long standing interest in the writer's personality, in the period of the second half of 19th century and in the problem of historical myths and stereotypes and their mass use. Julius Zeyer constructed meganarration - a whole set of myths that the Czech people were missing. The thesis examines where Zeyer was inspired, how he worked over his knowledge literally and how it was responded by contemporary criticism. At the same time, the thesis is focused on their connection to art, compares, how Zeyer's contemporaries wrote about similar topics. The work is based on the exploration of the writer's works, texts with similar themes, textbooks published after writer's death, archival materials and the press of the 19th century. Aim of this Ph.D. thesis is to prove the uniqueness and elusive concept of intangibility of Zeyer's Czech historical myth. Because of its complexity it could not become a major national idea.
“To miss out on the Region, the People and Life because of Castles and Ruins…” Tensions between Historicism and Regionalism using Zbudovská Blata as an Example
Hrdina, Martin
The region of Zbudovská Blata including its residents became known throughout Czech society at the beginning of the 20th century mainly thanks to the efforts of writers K. Klostermann and J. Holeček. The purpose of this essay is to recall the key circumstance of the literal presentation of the rural environment, which was a departure from romantic historicism of the 19th century, and to describe the role which the writers above bestowed upon the Blata residents in the context of Czech-speaking society. While Holeček used the Blata surroundings for purposes of a multifaceted polemic with the aristocracy, the conciliatory Klostermann created a timeless symbol from that same environment, thanks to which he secured a permanent place in Czech culture with his novel Mlhy na Blatech (Mist over Blata).
The Discovery of Inner Light in the Soul of Modern People
Hrdina, Martin
The study describes the discovery of ideas of inner light in people, which was inspired in the Czech lands by an Oriental renaissance and which manifested itself in the thinking of the philosopher František Čupr. A new resonance of archaic ideas in the modern era, dominated by physical theories of light, is mapped out in the religious discourse of the 1860s and 1870s, based on the example of the discussion about Christ at the time. Čupr´s concept of Christ, drawing on the texts of the ancient Indian Upanishads and Puranas, is compared with the interpretation in the biography of Christ by Ernest Renan, which was widely read at the time. At the end of the article, attention is devoted to manifestations of the new concept of light in this segment of the Czech literary field, whose authors had the greatest preconditions for interiorising stimuli coming from Oriental cultures.
Na vlnách života. Literární topos taneční zábavy v polovině sedmdesátých let 19. století
Hrdina, Martin
