The influence of the planned realization of the VRT railway terminal Ústí nad Labem Centre on the discursive construction of the future of the city from the perspective of chronopolitics.
Zářecký, Ladislav ; Gibas, Petr (advisor) ; Janeček, Petr (referee)
In the context of the planned implementation of the High Speed Rail (HSR) megaproject in the Czech Republic, speculations, stories about the future, revitalization discourses as well as positive and negative expectations related to the impacts of the project implementation are beginning to take shape and circulate in the affected regions and cities. The Czech Railways Administration (Správa železnic) is currently working with the possibility of routing the HSR Prague - Dresden through the city of Ústí nad Labem, the research site of the presented work, and with the possibility of building a special railway terminal in its centre, despite the original concept of territorial development. However, the exact form of the route and the terminal remains unclear, which, apart from the plan itself, causes a number of disputes and speculations. Some actors frame the project as a major opportunity for positive change in the city and the region, while many perceive the route through the centre of Ústí as a major threat and a radical negative intervention into the very fabric of the city, and for some the whole issue is elusive or ambivalent. The aim of this thesis is to describe by means of the method of discourse analysis how the narrative of the future of the city of Ústí nad Labem is articulated and...
The Meaning and Perception of Local Smal-Town Cinema
Bargel, Robert ; Gibas, Petr (advisor) ; Pauknerová, Karolína (referee)
This diploma thesis is an ethnographic study of a local small-town cinema in Řevnice near Prague. It analyzes social, cultural - or symbolic - meanings of this cinema with respect to a wider social and cultural context. Because the cinema, as a place, is constituted by the social practice of "cinema-going", this thesis is a "thick description" of spectators' lived experience in that space. The author of this thesis employs the interpretative approach of Geertz as well as the approaches of phenomenologicaly oriented thinkers of Patočka, Berger, Luckmann and Tuan. The author's research reveals that in current times, there is a strong symbolic polarity between small cinemas and multiplexes. Small cinemas are seen to be in opposition to the "popcorn culture" of the multiplexes on the levels of aesthetics, morals, ethics etc. In the case of the cinema in Řevnice, the local character of the facility is very important too. It not only distinguishes this cinema from multilpexes, but it also helps form local identity incorporated by the town and its inhabitants. The author also points out the differences between young and older people's perception of cinemas in general caused by their different previous experiences. In order to capture the wider cultural context of the cinema, the author uses the work of...

Unlike the public space, other terms of usage can be seen in the courtyards. Various social relationships can be observed in dependece of its usage. I deal with the process of negotiation of city dweller groups at two selected courtyards, the rules of their functioning and how the role of the decision- makers forms these places. I have deliberately decided to use courtyards with different visitor functions. Conflict between different views on their usage and disagreements can be seen in these courtyards. Key words: courtyard, semi-public space, negotiation proces, urbanism

Baños Pittnerová, Daniela ; Rynda, Ivan (advisor) ; Gibas, Petr (referee)
The thesis deals with the presence of a dog in the city, specifically in the public space and the research itself is aimed at negotiating "more than human" public space. The work takes the form of a case study, where I chose for research borough of Prague 2 and on particular cases of negotiation, I watched how each party tries to affect a form of public space. Through qualitative analysis I uncover the key points of negotiation by which I learn how the different parties understand the presence of a dog in a public space, on what basis is constantly negotiates form of residence and movement of the dog in this specific area.
