Rejzl, Bohuslav ; Hnilica, Jiří (advisor) ; Frankl, Michal (referee) ; Fasora, Lukáš (referee)
The aim of the dissertation is to present the phenomenon of forced migration of the civilian population during the First World War on the territory of Austria-Hungary, with special regard to their asylum in the Czech lands. The study is not limited to a single particular group of refugees based on ethnic or national affiliation but offers a view of ethnic pluralism in the place of their temporary asylum. The thesis attempts to synthesize the existing knowledge in historiography on the course and conditions of forced displacement of the civilian population on the Eastern and Italian fronts and presents the process of integration of refugees and evacuees in the territory of Bohemia and Moravia. On the basis of the study of archival sources of Austrian and Czech provenance, it pays attention to the reconstruction of life in refugee camps, the system of social and health care in the villages, spiritual life and, last but not least, the process of re-migration and repatriation, with regard to its continuity in the post-war years. In the socio-political context of the first years of Czechoslovakia, the thesis focuses on the social status of war refugees, furthermore it presents the process of liquidation of refugee care and the way of life in refugee camps in the time of the post-war demobilization.
Between High Culture and the Working Class: Typographical Communities in Leipzig, Vienna and Prague (1840-1914)

I have chosen the typographic communities in Leipzig, Vienna and Prague as the basic material for the following doctoral thesis. I will use their examples to trace, in a transnational perspective, the broad theme of the transformation of workers' collective identities, ideas and strategies in an era of fundamental technological, economic, social, political and cultural change from the end of the pre-March period to the beginning of the First World War. My aim is to combine the tradition of methodologically informed labour history of the last sixty years or so with the narrowly conceived trade union history of a small elite field that has a long tradition among typographers. I frame the general theme of the thesis as the formation of collective identities of manual workers in modern times, which I will here view as a precondition for the collective strategies and practices of negotiation that will also be analyzed. This will involve a synchronic analysis of the changes that have affected society as a whole with the changes in typographers' own self- reflection. An important theme of the following work will also be the exploration of the tension between the consciousness of belonging to the working class and the status consciousness that was particularly strong among typographers. Personally, I see...

Disertační práce Univerzita Karlova, Filozofická fakulta, Ústav hospodářských a sociálních dějin Komunální elity v Karlíně a Libni v letech 1861 - 1914 Municipal Elites in Karlín and Libeň between 1861 and 1914 Mgr. Jan Vobořil Abstract This thesis compares municipal elites in Karlín and Libeň - two suburban areas of Prague - between the years 1861 and 1914. Both municipalities were among the rapidly growing industrial communities with a significant presence of large mechanical engineering factories owned by shareholders. Moreover, Karlín also functioned as a commercial and financial center. The thesis analyzes their specific characteristics, urban development and demographics in the considered time period, as well as formation of municipal elites at the level of local government, election race and development of local politics. It also discusses the socio-professional characteristics of members of local government and their lifestyle based on collective biography considering among others their property, national preferences, social activities and housing standards and formation of family relations. Social structure in Karlín was significantly more complex than in Libeň. This was also reflected in the structure of municipal elites with important involvement of the well-educated social class, such as...

Pastoral care, or persuasion? The influence of church leaders and their control of clergy and believers. Research of religiosity, communication strategies of priests and their image in letters in the late 19th and early 20th century. Tomáš W. Pavlíček SUMMARY The author of the Ph.D. thesis examines the religious culture in Bohemia in the late 19th century. Contrary to the concept of secularization and the prevalent opinion about an extraordinary decline of religiosity in the Czech society, he attempts to explain the interdependence of social and religious changes in the modern times. Within the sociological concept of secularization and disenchantment of the world, the author focuses on three phenomena: the vocation of a priest, religious practices and conversion, which he treats as religious concepts and at the same time applies them in historical research. The biggest part of the thesis is devoted to the first object of the research - the attitude of a priest towards his vocation, as the clergy is the agent of religious change. The thesis contributes to the current discussions about the relationship of the church and the state and the role of clergy in the society. The main questions are: What is the role of a priest in the religious changes? In what way or under what circumstances does a person get the...

Art Societies of Central Europe in the Context of the 19th Century's Social Modernization This dissertation focuses on the changing relations between society and art in the course of the 19th century. The thesis is based on the comparison of art societies representing these environments. Leipzig-based society Leipziger Kunstverein is a probe into the world of German art, Umělecká beseda of Prague demonstrates the quest for continuous development of Czech national artistic discourse and Brno's Mährischer Kunstverein is an example of the specifics of German community ringed by Slavic majority in Moravia.
