Principle of similarity in relation to photography

The subject of my thesis is similarity in photography. The first part provides a complex definition of the principle of similarity, with emphasis on philosophy, logics, mathematics, semiotics, iconology and iconography. A connection of similarity with analogy, sylogism, mimesis and association is also pursued. The second part, which represents the core of the paper, selectively explores similarity as a stylistic and semanticising means in contemporary photography. Apart from other aspects, diptych and series in photography are discussed in greater detail.

Czech Commercial Photography During the Era of Normalization

The thesis is presenting the specific situation of Czech commercial
photography during the era of normalization. It tries to analyze the
production of photographers working for the companies oriented toward
the export. The text explores functionality of these companies, the
assignments policy, censorship and honorary politics. It also
investigates relationship between advertisement for the foreign
markets and organization the local fine art scene. The thesis lists
the photographers working for these companies, interviews with some
of them and illustration of visual style of the period.

Statesmans portrait developement

The way of portraying statesmen, that we got intimately acquainted with throughout the 20th century, must be seen in connection with the genre artists have been concerned with since the beginnings of the figurative art. The main topic of this study is the chronological development within which the preceding periods have impact on the following periods. The thesis also reveals significant parallels in the area of formal part of statesmen's and rulers' imaging and the way deities, gods and the God are imaged, i.e. the highest divine authorities, supposing the similarities between these genres are not random. Requisites for portraying leaders of empires and states resulted in defining almost a unified style of such portrayals, which was broken and significantly changed only by the emergence of photography. The new aesthetics and typology of photography imaging brings about new ways of portraying statesmen at the beginning of the 20th century, which are nevertheless influenced by tradition and which thus take the tradition into account.

Naomi Kawase: Contacts

In my bachelor thesis I tried to make the interpretation of thema and style of films of japanese authoress Naomi Kawase. I have chosen three films which I find the most significant for the authoress: The Snail (Katatsumori), Embracing and A letter from a yellow sherry blossom. By making the detailed analysis of particular films I tried to find out, what makes her films so specific. She makes the relationship between the subject equal ? it points on the fact, that the relationship between her and the object is essential and it determines the process of shooting. The authoress communicates with the viewer in a special way by using the fragmental naration? she gives big freedom of interpretation to the viewer: she makes him to fill the connections by himself, she communicates with him on the intuitive base. According to this, she can connect her personal theme with wider connections (for example with the thoughts about the family generally). Last but not least, Naomi Kawase reflects the film medium itself.

Natural thinking and its influence on the contemporary Czech art
The idea of natural thinking is connected with different areas of human activity. The places like Philosophy, Sociology, Science, Art are the few where this attribute would be appropriate. The meaning depends broadly on subjective choice that is determined by the intended context.
To decide the amount of influence of natural thinking I began to explore the influence itself to show its art and mental expression beginning with Romanticism. From my point of view it is important to start here because the heritage of Romanticism is still alive in the Czech environment.
In other chapters I mention some non-art relations that specify context. Than I continue with the analysis of main art expressions from the sixties till nowadays.
