Alfonso de Valdés and the universal empire of Charles V
Sucharda, Jiří ; Chalupa, Jiří (advisor) ; Lee Stolička, Ondřej (referee) ; Höbelt, Lothar (referee)
in English This work is dedicated to the topic of reflection of the idea of the so-called "universal empire" of the emperor Charles V in work of Spanish humanist Alfonso de Valdés (c. 1490-1532), who between the years 1520 and 1532 worked at the imperial court first as a scribe, then as a secretary of the grand chancellor Mercurino di Gattinara and finally as a secretary of Charles V himself. Using qualitative analysis of primary sources, mostly Latin and Spanish documents and writings left by Alfonso de Valdés, the work attempts to uncover and interpret the attitude of Valdés towards the nature of imperial power of Charles V as well as to other contemporary topics related to the problem of imperial universalism, such as his attitude towards the Catholic church and its reform or to the beginnings of the Reformation. The work is divided into three main sections, first of which is dedicated to the introduction of persons of Alfonso de Valdés and Charles V, the second to Valdés's attitude towards the universal empire itself, while the third deals with the topic of Valdés's attitude towards the Reformation, including his personal involvement in the imperial diet of 1530 in Augsburg.
Czechoslovak-Spanish relations (1918-1977)
Timko, Maroš ; Opatrný, Josef (advisor) ; Chalupa, Jiří (referee) ; Eiroa San Francisco, Matilde (referee)
The dissertation focuses on Czechoslovak-Spanish relations between 1918-1977. The main focus of the thesis is the research of the Spanish communist exile in post-war Czechoslovakia and the Slovak and Czech anti-communist exile in Francoist Spain, using new methodological approaches and concepts (everyday resistance, (im)mobility). Through the case studies focusing on the everyday life of "heterodox" Spanish exiles, the thesis also addresses the question of the dichotomy between the Spanish collectives in Ústí nad Labem and Prague. The research is also oriented towards the question of the development of economic relations between the people's democratic Czechoslovakia and Franco's Spain, as well as the subsequent process of the reestablishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, with an aim to contextualise the post-war Czechoslovak-Spanish relations within the reality of the Cold War. Last but not least, the thesis analyses the relations between both the individual emigrants (the leaders of the exile and its "rank and file" members) and between the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia (KSČ) and the Communist Party of Spain (PCE). Keywords: Czechoslovakia; Spain; Exile; Communist Party; Cold War; everyday resistance; (im)mobility
Czechs on Cuba in the Wider Context of Mutual Relations
Kráčmarová, Kateřina ; Opatrný, Josef (advisor) ; Chalupa, Jiří (referee) ; Vondráková Bortlová, Hana (referee)
The work studies a very specific period of the Czech-Cuban relations: the period of World War II and the Czechoslovakian refugees in Havana. For its creation, materials from two archives were used: the Archive of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic, the so-called "London Archive" which keeps the documentation of the Czechoslovak government in exile, and the National Archive of Cuba. In the first half of the 20th century, Cuba was not for the Czech society a distant country on the other side of the world. It was its partner and competitor on the world sugar market, and the echoes of Cuban independence were still fresh in its memory. The young Czechoslovak republic was looking for markets for its industrial and consumer products, while Cuban exports generally did not exceed a few dozen tons of unroasted coffee. In the inter-war period, some 20 Czechs and Slovaks were living in Cuba. The Munich Treaty, the occupation and then the application of the Nuremberg Laws created an atmosphere of suffocation and drastically reduced the living space for the Jewish population in the occupied territory of Czechoslovakia. Many decided to leave their homeland, but the world around them was unwilling to receive larger numbers of Jewish refugees. The original idea of getting to a safe place beyond...
Cultural Relations between Former Czechoslovakia and Selected States from the Andean Region in 1945-1989
Deylová, Iva ; Binková, Simona (advisor) ; Chalupa, Jiří (referee) ; Barteček, Ivo (referee)
IN ENGLISH Many historical documents prove that the first contacts between Central Europe and Latin America were established soon after the New World was reached by Christopher Columbus. However, it took a long time until the official relations with the former Czechoslovakia could have been initiated, first in the diplomatic field, second in the area of trade and then in science and culture as well. It may be redundant to say that in the last century the most frequent were the comercial relations. Even though, this work aims to describe mainly a cultural cooperation between Czechoslovakia and Andean states in the second half of the 20th century, more precisely Peru, Ecuador and Bolivia in between 1945-1989. From the wide range of activities organized by the Czechoslovak representation I have choosed the most often repeated, that is film presentations, exhibitions, radio and TV broadcasting. About those activities there is also the most evidence in the principal source of information I have selected, i. e. funds available from the Archive of the Ministry of Foreign Affaires in Prague and the National Archive of Czech Republic. As far as it is impossible to separate or isolate culture form other aspects of everyday functioning of any state, it has been necessary to outline the basic facts of the...
Czechslovakia and the Southern Cone 1945-1989
Zourek, Michal ; Opatrný, Josef (advisor) ; Kovář, Martin (referee) ; Chalupa, Jiří (referee)
The doctoral thesis Czechoslovakia and the Southern Cone 1945-1989 analyses political, economic and cultural relations between an important country of the Eastern Bloc and three countries of the southernmost area of South America - Argentina, Chile and Uruguay - during the Cold War. The main objective of the thesis is to interpret unpublished Czech and foreign archives. The first chapter outlines Czechoslovak policy towards Latin America in the period under consideration. The following sections describe the relations between Czechoslovakia and the individual countries of the Southern Cone. These chapters are divided according to the nature of relations into political, economic and cultural contacts. Each of these three parts is further divided into subsections which correspond to important milestones of mutual relations. The thesis ends with an interview with Stanislav Svoboda, a senior diplomat of communist Czechoslovakia. His observations shed new light on the archive documents. Without abandoning the effort of presenting foreign researchers with the value of Czech archives, whose importance is further increased by the limited accessibility of Russian archives, the paper attempts to analyse the issue in the broader context of international politics. In a bipolar world, each of these countries had...
