Gao Xingjian's Early Dramatic Work - Between Avant-garde and Tradition, bachelor thesis, Charles University in Prague, Faculty of Arts, Prague 2011, 51 pages. In the first part of her bachelor thesis the author presents Gao Xingjian's early dramatic work within the context of his essays and his theoretical thoughts. The author focuses mainly on four plays - Alarm Signal (1982), The Bus-stop (1983), The Other Shore (1986) and Between life and Death (1991). In these plays she points out Gao Xingjian's dramatic methods, e. g. the work with different persons of the pronoun, introduction of the alienation effect or a practical employment of Gao's "theory of triplication". The second part of present paper introduces the most influential sources of inspiration in Gao Xingjian's work. In the West it concerns Samuel Beckett and Bertolt Brecht, while in China it's Chan Buddhism and Beijing Opera. The author subsequently compares a mutual relations of these sources of inspiration, namely she relates Beckett's works to the Chan and Brecht's works to the Beijing Opera. The final part eventually analyses a specific synthesis of the different sources in Gao Xingjian's dramatic work.

Hladíková, Kamila ; Andrš, Dušan (advisor) ; Kolmaš, Josef (referee) ; Maconi, Lara (referee) ; Slobodník, Martin (referee)
(ENGLISH) Proposed dissertation examines a so-far less discussed topic of modern Tibetan literature, which is for the purpose of this study defined ethnically, not as based on language of literary creation. Because of specific socio-historical and cultural conditions, modern literature in the Western sense has not emerged in Tibet until the second half of the 20th century. The emergence of modern Tibetan literature was, as in case of genesis of other Asian modern-style literatures, initiated by an encounter with another culture (i.e. 'Western', 'rational', 'scientific' worldview, which was in case of Tibet introduced through the communist China). In the beginning of the 1980s, this process was de facto enforced by the need (of Chinese as well as Tibetan elites) to establish this literature as an authentic Tibetan voice, affirming their will to modernization through Tibet's belonging to the PRC. At the same time, modern Tibetan literature emerged in a period of certain liberalization after the Cultural Revolution, which in Tibet manifested as a kind of 'national revival', oriented specifically on restoration of religion and related cultural heritage. During that period this literature thus served two seemingly contradictory interests. In Tibetan society it played mainly enlightening and didactic...

The Novel Shengsi pilao by Mo Yan and Historical Fiction in the Contemporary Chinese Literature
Hovorková, Petra ; Andrš, Dušan (advisor) ; Lomová, Olga (referee)
The novel Shengsi pilao, written by a contemporary Chinese author Mo Yan, is a free continuation of authorʼs preceding writings recounting the lives of family clans in the Shandong province countryside during the 20th century. The novel employs a specific literary style in exploring history of the PCR from 1949 to 2000, using a story of a landownerʼs soul reincarnating itself to several different animals to be finally born as an extraordinary child. Some of authorʼs preceding works were characterized as "new historical fiction (NHF)", a wave of last century late 80ʼs Chinese fiction. NHF revives some of traditional Chinese fiction narrative techniques and introduces certain literary innovations at the same time. Thus it differs from earlier historical fiction, both traditional and modern. Its main characteristic is deconstruction of authorial representation, challenge to legitimacy of the official history and negation of Chinese modernity. This theses brings forward an analysis of narrative techniques, subjects and general meaning of the novel within the context of authorʼs previous work and considers its relation to NHF.
