Methods of sewage sludge treatment for agricultural applications with respect to micropollutants
Vítková, M. ; Komárek, M. ; Wickramasinghe, N. ; Pohořelý, Michael ; Moško, Jaroslav ; Hušek, Matěj ; Cajthaml, Tomáš ; Grasserová, Alena ; Čechmánková, J. ; Vácha, R. ; Zimová, M.
The aim of the methodology is to describe the possibilities of sewage sludge treatment by composting and pyrolysis for the application in agriculture, with particular respect to the so-called micropollutants, but also to conventional pollutants, and to assess the risks of treated sludge for the soil environment and the uptake of (micro)pollutants by cultivated crops. The methodology is based on the results from laboratory and field experiments of a three-year project and on a critical approach to sludge as a potentially hazardous waste on the one hand and a recyclable source of nutrients on the other.
Organic fluorine content and change during thermal treatmen
Hušek, Matěj
We have previously described how pyrolysis affected the content of selected PFAS representatives.4,5 However, we could not determine with certainty whether they were merely cleaved or mineralised. Therefore, we focused on the change in organic fluorine content (part of PFAS) and analysed its thermal behaviour in inert (sea sand) and heterogeneous (sewage sludge) material.

The application of sewage sludge to agricultural land is an increasingly debated topic, particularly because of the precautionary principle regarding the content of inorganic, organic and microbial pollutants. One of the practices treatment/treatment of sludge prior to land application is pyrolysis, whereby \nbiochars are produced from the sewage sludge, which, provided that proper process management, stable and free from organic and microbial \ncontamination. The aim of this paper was to verify the properties of biochars from sewage sludge that were subjected to different types of stabilization. The sludges were pyrolyzed at temperatures ranging from 600 to 650 °C and a certain correlation was found between degree of sludge stabilization and biochar properties (textural properties, elemental composition, energy value). \n\n

Removal of PFASs from sewage sludge by pyrolysis
Hušek, Matěj
Our work aimed to describe PFASs behaviour at different pyrolysis temperatures (200 to 700 °C). We analysed 37 PFAS in sewage sludge samples and pyrolysis products. The temperature at which PFASs were removed from the sewage sludge at more than 99.0% was 400 °C, and at 600 °C, removal was more than 99.9%. As a result, it is recommended for commercial sludge pyrolysis units (larger volume, lower material homogeneity) that the process temperature be not lower than 600 °C. This recommendation is supported and demonstrated by the analyses of samples from the Bohuslavice Trutnov WWTP (CZE), where the sludge pyrolysis unit is in operation.\n

Experimental methodology for studying the behaviour of perfluoroalkyl compounds during sewage sludge pyrolysis

One of the waste management options of stabilised sewage sludge is its treatment by pyrolysis. Pyrolysis units are suitable for sewage sludge treatment with low-heavy metal content, but their suitability for various organic pollutants removal contained in sludge is under investigation. In this paper, we discuss the issue of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) (organic pollutants) in sewage sludge and the development of a methodology for the experimental determination of PFASs behaviour during sewage sludge pyrolysis in order to determine practical pyrolysis conditions for the treatment of sewage sludge containing PFASs.\n\n
