Function of sleep, dreams and oneiric aesthetics in the Men God Forgot by Albert Cossery
Kovalčíková, Ema ; Šarše, Vojtěch (advisor) ; Provazníková, Adéla (referee)
This thesis focuses on the debut collection of five short stories, Men God Forgot (1946), by the Francophone writer of Egyptian origin, Albert Cossery. The thesis aims to analyze and discuss the function of sleep, dreams, and oneiric aesthetics in this collection of short stories, which embodies micro-stories of the inhabitants of the poor peripheries of the Egyptian capital. The study begins by presenting the context of the life and work of the author who, despite living in France for many years, in the collection portrays the city of his childhood, Cairo, through a dream narrative with elements of magical realism. It also examines the influences of the oneiric aesthetics of the period, the writer's minimalist lifestyle and the apotheosis of laziness, which are closely related to the utilization of the images of sleep and dreams in his literary works. The thesis also presents a perspective on dream and sleep phenomena from the standpoint of contemporary dream and sleep science. The key section of the thesis is devoted to a detailed analysis of the representations of sleep and dreaming in individual stories in Cossery's collection, particularly on the thematic and narrative levels. Sleep, dreaming, and the oneiric aesthetic are examined as metaphors of passivity, laziness, and regression for the...

Oplová, Eliška ; Šarše, Vojtěch (advisor) ; Janišová, Míla (referee)
This bachelor's thesis covers the work of a Guinean writer Williams Sassine: Wirriyamu. In the first part, with the help of historical sources, it describes the reality of a former Portuguese colony: Mozambique. It also clarifies the circumstances of the Wiriyamu massacre. The second part evaluates the findings in a comparative analysis of the fictional world of Sassine which the author uses to reflect the colonial reality. Specifically, it compares three problematics: clash of cultures, languages and religions, representation of different points of view on colonization in the novel Wirriyamu and lastly economic-social aspects of colonization.
Maghrebian testimonies: an analysis of the literary strategies used to verbalize the traumatic experiences of woman writers and the impact of their works on contemporary Francophone society
Vacková, Barbora ; Janišová, Míla (advisor) ; Šarše, Vojtěch (referee)
This bachelor's thesis will approach the issue of the status of women in Maghrebian society through selected works by French women writers of the contemporary literary scene. The thesis is divided into two parts. The first, theoretical, will introduce the female authors, the political context in which their work emerges, and the theory of masculine domination by the French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu. We then define the testimony literature according to the theoretical work of Catherine Coquio. In the literary analytical part, the actual analysis of the literary works will take place, based on the findings of the theoretical part. We will also use media and personal interviews of the writers as sources. We will use the autobiographical stories of Saïda Menebhi, Souad Labbize and Rachida Yacoubi to define the literary techniques used by the writers to convey their traumatic life experiences to the reader. Finally, we subject all the information to comparison, thus achieving a comprehensive picture of the knowledge gained.
The Anticolonial Novels Published in the 50th of Last Century in ParisObjectivation, Thingification and Identity Emptiness of Sub-Saharan Character
Šarše, Vojtěch ; Voldřichová - Beránková, Eva (advisor) ; Fučíková, Milena (referee) ; Vurm, Petr (referee)
The 1950s were marked by the anticolonial novel movement inspired by social realism. The decade saw the appearance of sub-Saharan novelists who became pillars, of sub-Saharan literatures written in French, later considered classics. These authors were all published in Paris, like their predecessors. In their novels, they describe the daily situation in the French colonies in Africa. They represent the first generation of sub-Saharan writers who, in a complex and systematic way, depicted the relations between colonizers and the colonized, relations disturbed and misbalanced by the strict and categorical practice of domination by the Occident. The prominent authors of this crucial period are: the Congolese Jean Malonga (1907-1985), the Ivoirians Bernard Binlin Dadié (1916-2019) and Aké Loba (1927-2012), the Senegalese Ousmane Socé Diop (1911-1973), Ousmane Sembène (1923-2007) and Cheikh Hamidou Kane (1928), the Guinean Camara Laye (1928-1980), two Cameroonians Ferdinand Oyono (1929- 2010) and Mongo Beti (1932-2001). These authors, who I explore in my paper, do not belong, as we can see, to the same generation, but their first novels were written and published in the decade before decolonization (except Ambiguous Adventure by Cheikh Hamidou Kane, which was not published until 1961). Moreover, these...
CFCO as a product of French colonization in Congo
Urbaníková, Eva ; Půtová, Barbora (advisor) ; Šarše, Vojtěch (referee)
This baccalaureate work focuses on the history and anthropological context of the Congo-Ocean railway line (CFCO). The primary objective of the work is to approximate and objectively describe the actual construction of this line from its start to its completion. The purpose of these descriptions is to point out the truth of the period view, which was misrepresented by the colonial power. The work is divided into three chapters. The first deals with the introduction to the problem, but primarily with what preceded the start of construction, but also with the recruitment of recruits and their transport to the site. In the second part, we find descriptions of the work leaders, statistics and references to the conservation of the period documentation. The last chapter details aspects of the life of recruits living in camps, i.e. diseases, meals and accommodation for recruits. In this section, the current state of the Congo-Oceana railway is also cautioned Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)
Reflections on Patrick Chamoiseau's work through the lens of Frantz Fanon
Korecká, Alžběta ; Janišová, Míla (advisor) ; Šarše, Vojtěch (referee)
This bachelor's thesis deals with the analysis of sociopolitical phenomena that are a consequence of the colonial past in the French department of Martinique. I use the Antillean author Patrick Chamoiseau's book Solibo Magnificent to demonstrate these phenomena. Individual elements that are characteristic for societies that were under the colonial administration of France are described in the book of the older author from Martinique, Frantz Fanon: Black Skin, White Masks. In the first chapters, I focus mainly on the French language as the primary instrument of colonial rule. Then I analyze other areas (administration, education, police) in which a system based on dominance has infiltrated the social order. I apply Fanon's individual theses (relating to the inferiority complex) to excerpts from Chamoiseau's book. At the end of the work, I focus on the definition of identity, which is a key topic for both authors. Key words Frantz Fanon, Patrick Chamoiseau, Francophone Antillean literature, Martinique, colonialism, Creole, cultural identity
(Breton's and Chavée's) Surrealist woman / woman of surrealists
Girodová, Anna ; Šarše, Vojtěch (advisor) ; Janišová, Míla (referee)
(anglicky) This bachelor's thesis aims to compare two poems by two surrealist authors, namely the poem L'Union libre (1931) from the pen of André Breton and the poem Eva (1946) from the Belgian representative of surrealism Achille Chavée, through a comparative analysis. The introductory chapter is devoted to the historical-cultural context, within which the themes of French and Belgian surrealism are elaborated. In the second part of this theoretical chapter, the thesis deals more deeply with the motif of women in the surrealist movement. The main part of the bachelor thesis focuses on the actual analysis of both poems, in which it describes the linguistic means, and above all the motivic aspects of both texts. The final chapter consists of a final comparison of both poems, primarily in the comparison of the approach of the lyrical narrators to the character of a woman. The conclusion of the thesis summarizes the collected knowledge, mainly about poetic texts and their approaches to the motif of women.
Representation of (former) African colonies in 19th and 20th century domestic travel writing
Martinek, Adam ; Novotný, Josef (advisor) ; Šarše, Vojtěch (referee)
This diploma thesis analyzes 19th and 20th Czech language travel literature from (former) African colonies. The thesis is rooted in postcolonial theory - namely Osterhammel's synthesis of colonialism as a structure and an ideology, as well as Said's theory of orientalism. A key theoretical aspect of this work is Sarah Lemmen's updated notion of noncolonial orientalism, which arose out of her empirical work on Czech/Czechoslovak travel writing. Lemmen's concept addresses the specific standing of the Czech traveler vis-à-vis the colony, as they were not a representative of any world power, yet still exhibited orientalist views on colonies and the colonized. This work also pays special attention to the influence of socialist ideology on travel literature published between the years 1948 and 1989. The research questions which this work aims to answer are as follows: a) how is colonialism represented in Czech travel literature?, b) how is decolonization represented?, c) how do these travelogues portray Africans and their relationship to Europeans? These questions aim at understanding the authors' relationship with colonialism and orientalism as both ideology and practice which they encountered in Africa. The thesis consists of an analysis of nineteen of potential fifty-eight travelogues written by...
The identity of the Maghrebian authors based in France and their local reception
Rážová, Nicole ; Janišová, Míla (advisor) ; Šarše, Vojtěch (referee)
This bachelor thesis analyses the work and reception of two authors with Maghrebian roots living in France, Leïla Slimani and Faïza Guène. The thesis is divided into two parts. The first, the theoretical part, introduces the two writers and their work, the theory of the literary field by the French literary scholar and sociologist Pierre Bourdieu, and the influence of the social environment on identity. The thesis then examines the link between personal and national identity and language and the aforementioned issues in the context of Francophonie. Furthermore, the thesis comments on the specificities of the French literary field. The second part, the empirical part, focuses on a detailed analysis of the reception of each of Leïla Slimani and Faïza Guène's books and aims to test the hypothesis set out in the introduction that problematic identity causes problems in the literary field. This analysis is carried out using the corpus of media texts and audiovisual and radio interviews we have created and is complemented by a synthesis of the information obtained.
